I am having a difficult time deciding between these two diamonds:

The 0.92 has some graining/feather, but I’m not sure if at VVS2 it would detract from the diamond. If there’s any insight you can provide, it would be GREATLY appreciated!

The virtual loupe is only useful for evaluating clarity and cut (to a degree). We can tell how shiny and sparkly a stone will be because we are used to seeing how different patterns are displayed through different combinations of proportions and angles. So we can usually recognize by the face up view of the stone how it will perform in real life.

You’re right about the different lighting. It makes the comparisons very uneven between pictures because there are no constants between pics. That’s why they’re only useful for clarity and cut which aren’t really effected by the lighting.

How can you guys tell how shiny, sparkly, etc. a diamond will be by looking at the virtual loop? They all seem to be photographed in different light.

Hi Beth. It’s a tough call because you can’t really compare radiants and asschers – they’re very different looking stones. If you prefer Asschers, I like the 3.51 more. If you like radiants, then the one you linked to is a great choice!

Hi, Ira. GREAT SITE! I’m recommending it to all my friends. I’m looking to buy a pear shaped diamon between 1.50 and 2.0. Any advice on what to look for in this specific shape? My plan is to place it in a basket setting, kind of like a Tacori – if that’s possible. in that case I wonder if I can get away with more inclusions if they are off to the side and deeper in the diamond. Does that even make sense? I can spend up to 11k on the diamond. Any suggestions?
