Q: Hello Ira, I have been shopping for a loose diamond to mount in a setting for the last 4 months or so. I saw your site and found it incredibly helpful. I have also been monitoring the James Allen site and noticed it is appreciably cheaper than any other site I have found on the Internet. I am switching jobs in the next month, which will allow me to finally move forward with my purchase. To the diamond, my girlfriend really has her heart set on a 1.5ct diamond, has to be princess cut, and my budget is proving somewhat constrictive. I already have a setting picked out, and have budgeted roughly $6K for the diamond. Here is the setting I plan on mounting it in. http://design.jared-diamonds.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-5794.asp I was wondering what your suggestion would be, and if maybe I should think about getting a slightly smaller, yet higher quality diamond. I appreciate you help, thanks!

A: Thanks for writing. You’re right that your budget is a bit constrictive, but i don’t think it’s REstrictive. Here are three options that are really beautiful stones that would look great with that setting:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VVS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1303427.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1301513.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1298698.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Those each have superb cuts and are totally clean to the naked eye. Each one is a fantastic choice.

Let me know what you think!

Q: Sorry for the delayed response. I looked over the diamonds you sent me and I really like the first link! I am considering this diamond and one other right now.

The other that I saw pop on James Allen I posted below, and thought that it looked like a great deal. While the cut is only premium, as compared to ideal, it seemed like the difference in cost might be substantial enough to over come my reservations.

Let me know what you think when you get a chance, and thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS2-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1292297.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

A: Hey XXXXX. I think that’s a great stone. Its parameters fit within my recommended parameters from my princess cut article.

….

Did you manage to make a purchase yet? If so, I’d love to hear what stone you settled on in the end!

Q: We have yet to actually make a purchase yet, however have narrowed it down to two stones on James Allen.

We shopped all of the brick and mortar stores and never found all of them to be significantly more expensive for lower quality diamonds.

After searching settings further however, we changed our mind and are going in a different direction. Due to my future wife’s wonderful skin tone we feel like a yellow gold setting would compliment her very well. We found this setting with which we are particularly enamored:

http://www.shaneco.com/Catalog/ProductDetail.aspx?X=41046797&O=Nav&C0=1&C1=3&S=PD

The setting in natural light has just a slight tint of yellow.

As to the diamonds we like, due to the nature of the setting we feel like a J color would compliment this setting especially well. Here are the two contenders we have identified:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS2-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1292297.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – 1.62, VS2, premium cut, $5360

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS2-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1298772.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – 1.50, VS2. premium cut, $5690

We are leaning towards the second one since it seems to have a better cut.

What are your thoughts, and if you see something else you think is especially nice I would love to hear.

Again thanks for the information on your site, it made finding a quality diamond at a great price possible.

A: Thanks for getting back to me. That’s a really beautiful setting you picked out. The ring is going to look amazing.

I also think you’re doing the right thing by going for a J color stone to match the setting.

I looked at the two stones you suggested, and I searched myself for a better alternative, and I don’t think I found one. The closest I could find was this:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VVS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1311148.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Here’s my thinking: I don’t like the 1.50 ct stone. It’s too shallow, and it has an extremely thin girdle which is (especially on a princess cut) is prone to chipping. So while it’s size is attractive, it’s not worth the risk.

I like the 1.62 stone. It’s got a great price. I would have preferred an ideal cut, but this is what there is.

Actually, the stone I suggested above is a really good option. Even though it’s only 1.28cts, it’s only a TINY bit smaller in LxW than the 1.62ct stone (because of it’s ideal cut). 6.34×6.15 vs 6.22×6.12. That difference really isn’t even perceptible to the naked eye. So, actually, I think I endorse that 1.28 OVER the 1.62 for the simple reason that they’re going to look almost identical, so why spend $1000 more on one of them!

Q: So after much consultation I wanted to get your opinion one last time before making our big purchase.

The 1.28 stone is currently the front runner, so thanks for finding that gem no pun intended, but before I pulled the trigger on that stone I wanted to get your opinion on two other ideal cut stones at a higher price point. My girlfriend, soon to be finance, originally had her heart set on a 1.5ct stone, but being a reasonable person if the costs out weight the benefits then she is willing to amend her previous expectations. Here are all three stones with the 1.28 as the first stone.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VVS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1311148.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1276853.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VVS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1303427.asp?a_aid=dmnd1375

The other three stones are:

1.28ct, ideal cut, J color, VVS2, 6.22×6.12 for $4,310

1.50ct, ideal cut, I color, VS1, 6.51×6.29 for $6,570

1.55ct, ideal cut, J color, VVS1, 6.48×6.44 for $6,910

After reading your useful site over and over I feel fairly comfortable identifying all of these as excellent stones. What I really would like to know is if the cost difference between the 1.28ct and the 1.5ct stones is warranted. By this, I am basically wondering if the visual difference to the naked eye is going to be significant enough to warrant the extra $2,200 in cost. If the difference is minimal, or hardly discernible then I would be inclined to go with what I feel is an excellent bargain in the 1.28ct, but as you are probably well aware this is a big purchase and I just wanted to get it right.

Thanks for taking the time to digest this lengthy message, and your help has proven invaluable.

A: Here’s what I think:

1) Reject the I VS1. It’s not as nice of a cut as the J VVS1, so if you’re going to spend more money, it should be for the J, not the I.

2) The 1.55 is a slightly better cut than the 1.28, so it’s going to look slightly nicer (in addition to being larger).

3) THe difference in size is only about 0.25mm which is noticeable, but really just barely noticeable.

So it’s really your call. For the extra $2200, you get a very slightly larger stone and a very slightly nicer stone. Is that worth $2200? It’s hard to say. It’s certainly not an easy call in either direction. It’s not like it’s a MUCH nicer stone and MUCH bigger. But on the other hand, it is nicer and bigger, and noticeably so – just not by a lot.

…….

Just wanted to follow up with you. Did you make a decision yet? If so, I’d love to hear what you went with in the end.

Q: After a lot of consideration last night I finally made my decision and purchased the 1.28 ideal princess cut diamond you recommended from James Allen. The combination of the size of the diamond cut quality, and an almost too good to be true price made it too hard to pass up.

I wanted to again thank you for taking your time to help me with this purchase. The information on your website proved invaluable and made buying this diamond with confidence a reality.

A: What great news! Please let me know what you think once it arrives!

Q: I received the diamond in the mail last week and was amazed at the brilliance and size of the diamond I had purchased. It was exactly what I had been looking for.

Again, I can’t thank you enoug for your help. It made buying a diamond easy and gave me the confidence necessary to succeed.

Q: Greetings Ira, First, I must write that your site is a must-read for any diamond shopper! Having this wealth of information and your expertise all in one place is such a help – wish I had come across your site before I was already a month into my diamond search! I am looking for a cushion-cut stone, eye-clean, and had narrowed down my list between stones on James Allen and Blue Nile before I came across your site. I have a $3,000 budget for the stone. Below are links to a few of the stones on my short list:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1276428.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VVS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1278969.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1290917.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search#diamonds_pid=LD01695503

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search#diamonds_pid=LD01731890

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search#diamonds_pid=LD01727659

My bride-to-be has mentioned to friends that she prefers a square-shape, so I’ve been limiting my search to stones with ratios of 1.00 – 1.05. Also, I was able to find out through a friend that she loves this setting from James Allen:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-171.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

For her, fire and brilliance are more important than stone size, although I would like to find her a 3/4 stone or greater. Am I on the right track with the stones already on my list, or do you see a stone or two out there that might be a better fit for what I’m looking for? Thanks for all your help! We gentlemen certainly have a tall order when it comes to finding that one stone she’ll love – your site eliminates much of the confusion that comes with the search. Kudos to you!

A: Hi! Thanks for writing! First of all, I love the ring your GF wants. I think it’s really classy. Don’t forget to use the TADJ10 discount to get 10% off the setting. For an expensive ring like that, 10% is real money!

As for JA vs BN, I think in this case you need to stick with JA for two very important reasons. 1) Cut qualities on cushion cuts vary greatly. And it’s not something (like with rounds) that you can just judge by table and depth% alone. You need to see the stone. and 2) The ring you want is on JA, and it’s always the safest move to have the same person who’s selling you the diamond set it for you. If you buy the diamond from BN and have it set by someone else and the diamond chips at the jeweler, you’re responsible for the damage.

It happens to be that the 3 cushions you selected from JA look amazing. The only suggestion I thought to make was to try to find a larger stone like this:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1281221.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

But in the end, even though it’s heavier, it doesnt have a larger face than the stones you selected. Out of the 3 you sent me from JA, I like this one the best:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1276428.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

The three stones will probably look identical, so why not just go with the cheapest one?

Let me know what you think of my suggestions!

Q: Thanks so much for your prompt response and sound guidance. I’m grateful for your thoughts on choosing a diamond from JA as opposed to BN, as I’m getting the setting from JA. It was a source of anxiety for me when considering getting a stone from BN and having another party set it.

Thanks for sending me another stone for consideration. Having weighed your input, I think that I might as well save a few hundred dollars and go with a slightly lighter stone, especially if one would not look at the heavier stone and say, “Wow, that’s a much bigger diamond!”

However, I do have one more stone for you to look at, if you have time time. As I started looking at stones on JA exclusively, I came across this one:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1278839.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

There was something about this stone that actually made me say “Ooooohh” out loud. Now, I realize this stone may very well look no different than the one you identified as your favorite in my previous email, and it is a bit more expensive, but my initial reaction to it led me to think that it might be the stone I should get. But, I don’t want to be a sucker on account of my eyes playing tricks on me.

Do you see anything that should lead me to take pause? Also, if you concur, please send me a link to the stone above, as I want to be sure you receive commission – very well deserved!

Again, thanks so much for your time and expertise.

A: I’m glad you found my email helpful. Also, I’m very grateful for your concern about my commission.

As far as the two stones are concerned, I agree that there’s something about the 0.75ct stone that looks special. In the end, you’re buying the diamond because it’s something that’s beautiful to look at, so you might as well go with that stone. It’s very possible that they’d look identical to your naked eye, but if you bought the other one, you’d always wonder if you didn’t buy the best stone because you wanted to save $140. That extra $140 will set your mind at ease. And either way, both stones are under your budget.

As for the link, here you go: http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1278839.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Thanks again! I really appreciate it! And PLEASE let me know how it looks when it arrives!

……..

Hey (NAME REMOVED). Did you get the ring yet? If so, I’d love to hear what you think!

A: As a matter of fact, the ring was delivered this morning. It’s GORGEOUS! I couldn’t be happier…and more importantly, I know Kelly will LOVE this ring! I’ll be sure to send you a couple of photos once I get the chance to take some.

Can’t thank you enough for your time and thoughtful input!

A: That’s wonderful news!! (Great timing!)

I wish you and your future fiance a long life together filled with endless blessings.

Q: I am looking for an engagement ring and happened to come across your site. Here is what I’m looking for:

* Is your goal cheapest price for given parameters, or best diamond for fixed budget:

Well, I’m looking for the best diamond that I need without overpaying for things that are not needed.

* Shape:

Round

* Desired Color Range:

F, G, H

* Desired Clarity:

VS1, VVS2

* Budget:

$5000

* Anything else you might feel is relevant:

The above parameters are flexible.

After reading your homepage, it seems like a VS2 will be acceptable if the blemish is not visible. Basically, I’m somewhat fortunate as my girlfriend does not really want a big ring as she doesn’t want it to look too gaudy. She saw a friends ring which was 1.25 carats and thought it looked nice, BUT she said she could never wear a ring like that. (note, it wasn’t round so I don’t know if that made it look bigger than the carat weight) She has relatively small, petite fingers. At a store, she saw 0.5 and 0.75 carats and she said that would be enough (but she didn’t try it on, just looking through the case). However, financially, I can afford a bit more than that. So I’m thinking of about a 0.9 carat ring. The ‘guy’ side of me wants to go even bigger since I can afford it. I don’t want to regret buying a too small ring when I could afford a larger one. Yet, I want to respect her wishes. Anyway, I’m looking for any advice or maybe the best value diamond at around 0.9 carats or something else if you recommend a bigger ring.

A: Let me hit your issues one at a time.

Clarity – Did you see my article on clarity? You could easily go down to an SI2 and still have a completely naked eye-clean diamond. I’m happy to limit my search to VS2s only, but I just wanted to make sure you knew that it wasn’t necessary.

Size – Do you think your GF was telling you those things about the size of the diamond because she really doesn’t WANT a larger stone, or do you think she was just being modest and not wanting you to break the bank for her? If you really believe she doesn’t want a larger diamond, then clearly you probably shouldn’t get one. But if she’s just being modest, then definitely go for it and get the largest stone you can. But if you stick to the higher end of your range of color and clarity, you won’t be able to afford a larger diamond for $5000.

Anyway, take a look at my article on clarity, and think about the size question and let me know your thoughts. Once these issues are squared away, I’ll send you some suggestions.

Q: Thanks for replying.

With you selecting the diamond, I would be willing to go down to a SI2 since you have experience looking at diamonds and determining what would by eye-clean or not. If I’m selecting on my own, I would probably stay with a VS2.

As for size, she went to a store and saw a 0.5, .75, and 1 carat and tried them on. She said she would choose the 0.75. So I am searching for a 0.75 to 0.9 diamond. Just a little bigger than what she wants, but still smaller than 1.0.

Also, the price is flexible, meaning if the diamond is $5000 and the total with the setting is $6000, it will be okay with me. But I’m guessing that since the diamond will be under a carat, the total price would be under 5000.

To let you know, her size would be 5.5 or 5.75 if available. Also, I am looking at a platinum or white gold solitaire setting. Something simple and classic.

A: I think you’re being very smart about your choices. I took a look for you and this is what I came up with:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1282403.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – GIA triple excellent. Looks eye clean.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1249347.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – GIA excellent cut. Eye clean.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-865226.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – Excellent cut. Beautiful stone. You can put a prong over that collection of inclusions on the edge.

There’s a huge jump in price between .80s and .90s without such a big jump in size. So I think it’s definitely smart to stay in the 80s.

As far as the setting goes, why not go for a classic tiffany style knife edge solitaire?

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/solitaire-diamond-ring.html

Let me know what you think!

Q: Thanks for the options. Which of these two is the more beautiful diamond? And how can I guarantee that the setting will be placed over the inclusions on the second one?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1249347.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-865226.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Also, the typical guy in me still has the urge to go a little bigger. What do you think of these diamonds? I assume size-wise, visually, I’m not getting much for the extra money as its just carat weight, right?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1295666.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1192969.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

I guess my budget was $5000 and this will be well below it, including the setting. I should be happy, and I am! But I’m just wondering if I should spend a little more to get a little better quality or go a little bigger? Or should I read your website again and be happy with the savings. Can you say with a degree of certainty that those SI2 are eye clean? I guess the SI2 part scares me as its not even a SI1.

A: Between those two I like the F color better. But they’re VERY close. Usually, JA’s jewelers will know on their own to prong the inclusions, but you can always make a special request as well.

As far as the other question goes – The difference between the two sizes is about 0.2. This is just at the threshold of what’s noticeable to the eye. So the difference will definitely be noticeable, it just won’t be obvious. You’d have to have both next to each other to notice. Meaning, I showed you the 0.80 and then took it away and showed you the 0.90, you would most likely think they’re the same size.

Of the two 90s you suggested, I like the G color better. The E color has a VG cut from GIA.

I’m very confident both SI2s are eye clean, but you could always ask the folks at JA to check it for you themselves. I’m just guessing based on a photo, but they can actually inspect it for you face to face.

Q: Thanks for all your help! Of these two, which is the more beautiful diamond? Could you judge it two ways.

1) Disregard the price difference. Simply which is the more beautiful to look at.

2) Include the $900 price difference.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-865226.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1295666.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Of course, at any time in this process, if you notice another diamond that I should consider, please let me know. But as of now, I guess these are my two choices.

Also, would you recommend the 2mm or 2.5mm knife edge for this size diamond? She has somewhat petite fingers (5.5 -5.75 size).

And does the ‘comfort fit’ feel that much more comfortable than a regular ring? The knife edge that you suggested also caught my eye before you suggested it. The other setting that caught my eye is the comfort fit for….well… comfort.

…….

I guess one more question. How do these two diamonds compare with what was shown on your website blog?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1302250.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Price-wise, it is still in budget and around the price of the 0.9 carat SI2 diamond? Is this a superior diamond compared to my other two choices and worth the price?

A: Disregarding price, they are just about equal. The 0.90 is a tiny bit bigger, but the 0.82 is a tiny bit whiter. I think they cancel each other out.

Including the price, clearly the 0.82 is a much better value.

I wish I could give you a better answer about the ring. I think for this kind of question, you should maybe contact JA’s customer support. My professional experience is really limited to loose diamonds. I’m not so familiar with the intricacies of jewelry.

All I’d say is that the knife edge style is extremely popular, so I can’t imagine it being uncomfortable.

As far as ring width is concerned, I have a feeling the 2mm band is really thin – a little too thin looking. I think the 2.5 would still look great on a petite woman. Don’t forget to use the TADJ10 discount code, btw. It’ll give you 10% off the setting.

Yes, this diamond is definitely superior. Whether or not it’s worth the extra money, that’s another question. The H&A ideal cut means it will sparkle more than the other stones. But whether that extra boost in sparkle is worth the premium is a subjective call. To those who are really sensitive to these things and demand the best, then it’s an easy decision. To others who can barely tell two different diamonds apart, it’s a waste of money.

Sorry I couldn’t make things clearer!

Q: Thanks for all your help!

I am definitely leaning towards the 0.82 diamond.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-865226.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

As you hinted, it’s a waste of money for those who can barely tell the difference, like me and I assume my girlfriend. I keep telling myself to don’t be too frugal since I am VERY frugal by nature. It’s a good point as it has put me in a position to somewhat easily afford this diamond. And I don’t want to be frugal about this once in a lifetime thing, so I still have a little urge to go bigger or higher quality than needed. My $5000 budget was slightly on the frugal side of the range.

But I think I just need to tell myself that this 0.82 diamond is big enough and beautiful enough and not worry about that 1.0 carat threshold or be brainwashed about 2 month salary myth.

Thank you for all your help. If another diamond comes up that you think will appeal to me, let me know. I will give this a few days to think about it so I am completely satisfied with my decision. Or you can give me more encouragement about this 0.82 diamond based on all your experience.

A: I completely understand all of your feelings back and forth. It’s the beginning of a life together with the one you love, and the last thing you want to do is start it off on the wrong foot. You wouldn’t even want to give the impression that you’re sacrificing her special gift at all in order to save a few hundred dollars.

But on the other hand, those few hundred dollars aren’t really buying you all that much (at least tangibly). From the sound of what you’ve told me about your GF, it sounds like she’d want you to buy the 0.82 and save the rest.

Here’s an idea – if you want to make the smart value decision on the diamond, but still want to feel like you’re spending good money on your future fiance, maybe buy her another gift with the money you’ll save? You could get her a nice pair of studs if she doesn’t have one already.

Stay in touch and let me know when you’re ready to buy. Then I’ll look again at that time to see if anything better popped up.

Q: I guess I learned a bit about the diamond market, that you have to act fast. That 0.82 diamond is now not available. So what do you think of this diamond?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1269147.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Is the depth a little to deep? Or any other diamonds out there that catch your eye? Is there a certain day of the week or month that these retailers get new inventory?

A: That stone’s not too deep. That’s a killer stone. Grab that one.

As for your other quesiton, no – it’s pretty much random. There’s no standard re-stocking day in the business.

Q: Thanks for your opinion. I went ahead and called James Allen to put it on hold. I’m at work now (yeah…I know I’m a bad worker) so I can’t actually piece together the order until later tonight. I will have to put in my order by phone and I confirmed that I can still use your coupon, so I hope you still get your commission.

One question though. Any reason why that ring is a SI2? It looks pretty clean to me. It looks like one scratch. But is that one scratch visible? Ii it clean to the eye? Is it something that James Allen can verify for me before I buy it? Or is it cloudy? It just seems like that should be rated higher than a SI2. (haha…look at me, one week of doing this and I already think I can grade stones!)

A: The inclusion plot says that it’s a feather, which are often clear in color. So it’s most likely that the feather is translucent and on the side (possibly under the girdle) – so that would explain why you don’t see it in the picture. That’s a very desirable SI2.

Q: Hi, I am looking to find the best diamond in my price range (isn’t everyone? haha). I came across this website, which has been of great benefit to me, and was really hoping you could help me, as you have others. I have done some research and have found 4 I think are pretty good deals. I was hoping you could take a look and let me know what you think and maybe even suggest a better deal.

Here are the 4 diamonds I currently have on my list:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1280322.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VVS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1136704.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1171216.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1195694.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

I am looking for a cushion shape in the $3000 to $4000 range. I am going to be putting it in a platinum ring with sidestones (at the bottom are a few rings i like). I would like at least 1 carat, with a color no less than J, and prefer the cushion l/w ratio to be close to 1. I like the square look better than the rectangle look.

Here are the rings I am looking at getting with the stone:

I really appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

A: I’m very happy to help. My first comment, though, is that a J color cushion cut might not be a good match with a platinum setting. Cushions show color rather strongly, so a J color will start to have a noticeable tint. I would suggest you stick to H or I colors (even at the expense of getting a larger stone). Once I get your confirmation that this is OK, I’ll send you some suggestions.

Q: This is the kind of information I was looking for, and is exactly why I asked for your help. I was unsure if J would be too low of a color with the cushion shape, and also with the diamonds that are in the band of the platinum ring averaging around G-H in color. I will take J diamonds out of my future searches, and will send you a few more links after my next search. Thanks.

A: My pleasure. I took a quick look for you. Here’s what I got:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1197703.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – Slightly rectangular. Picture stinks, so its really hard to tell, but the odds of a VS2 being visible to the naked eye are VERY slim.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VVS1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1195563.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – more squarish

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1184584.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – slightly over budget, but a really great deal for a G color

Q: Thanks for the suggestions, I took a look at those and found a few others. Sorry for sending you so many diamonds, just having trouble separating them and want to be sure when spending this much money. I put my opinion after each link, let me know where you disagree and agree with me. I really appreciate the help, it means a lot to have someone with your knowledge willing to help. (IRA – MY RESPONSES TO HIS COMMENTS ARE IN RED)

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1262808.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 - Not quite sure why this one is only $2580. It is an I color, 1.11 carat, VS2, near square. Is there something I don’t know that should throw up a flag for this diamond? It’s cheap because it’s IGI certified. Which means it’s probably equivalent to a GIA J SI1

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VVS1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1195563.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – This is one of the ones you suggested. Looks to have pretty good stats in all categories, 1.07 carat. Don’t think I would like to go smaller than this diamond carat-wise. Great stone with a great cut

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1184584.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 - One you mentioned, looks to be a pretty good diamond. Slightly smaller than the rest, but might be too good of a deal to pass up for a G color. As I think I mentioned to you earlier, color is very important with Cushion cuts. So getting a G color that’s only slightly smaller than the I colors might be the right choice.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1197703.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 - Another of the ones you mentioned. Looks to be good in all categories, 1.11 carat. Not quite as square as the rest, but a good diamond. Squarness is a matter of taste not an objective description of beauty. So if you want square, then reject this one.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1200833.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 - Looks pretty good for an SI1, in my opinion. Did not look any worse than the other VS2’s I was looking at. Appears to be some spots on the edge of the table and a spot near the center of the diamond, not sure how they will look to the naked eye. Seems like a great price for an H color with what seems to be pretty good numbers in all other categories but clarity. Diamond would be eye clean for sure, but it’s got strong blue fluorescence which I’d recommend against unless you have the JA customer service pull the stone to check it for milkiness/cloudiness. It’s cheap because of the flour.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1281586.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 - A little above my price range, but looks like it might be a pretty good deal for 1.20 carat. Looks pretty clear for a SI1. I believe the inclusions are in the center of the diamond, but how visible do you think those would be to the naked eye? They don’t appear to be that noticeable in the pictures. It doesn’t appear to any worse than some of the VS2’s I was looking at. beautiful stone. definitely eye clean.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1288598.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 - 1.21 carat similar to the one above it, in price and size. Slightly more noticeable inclusions than the one above, I think. Also eye clean. Has large open culet, so you need to decide whether that bothers you or not.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1219738.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – I think this one sold already, or someone has it on hold. I liked this one’s size, price, color, clarity. A little upset it sold already. Yes, it’s been sold already.

A: See above for my comments (in bold red type).

Q: Thanks again for the input. I think I have it down to 3 diamonds, maybe 4.

1195563- I like this diamond, 1.07 carat, I color, VVS1 clarity for a good price. Polish, symmetry, culet, and fluorescence all look. I don’t know really know what is good/bad for the girdle or how much of a difference the girdle makes. Overall I like this diamond.

1184584- This diamond is similar to the one above it but the color and girdle. 1.06 carat, G color, VS1 clarity. Not a big difference in the VVS1 VS1 clarity in my mind, don’t think I would be able to tell the difference between the two looking at them. Girdle on this one is very thin to extremely thick compared to medium on the one above, again I don’t know how much of a difference that makes. This one is a G color and you said that color is important for cushion cut. Do you think the color upgrade is worth the $800 difference in price? I like the idea of getting a G color diamond, based on what you have said, it sounds like it would be better for a cushion cut in a platinum setting. The carat is basically the same. So I guess it boils down to is going up to G from I worth $800, it seems like that is the only thing seperating the two?

1281586- While contemplating going above budget, this one is about the same price as the G color. It is 1.20 carat, I color, and SI1 clarity. As said in previous emails this SI1 appears to be clean to the eye and not much different from most of the VS2’s I was looking at. I don’t know if it is just the male in me that thinks if I am going up in price, why not go for the bigger diamond? The things hurting this diamond appear to be the clarity and the girdle, not sure if girdle is a deal breaker or of no consequence in the long run. I don’t mind going a little above my price range for either the G or this diamond. They both appear to be a good diamond at a good price.

I am also keeping 1197703 on my list in case these 3 are sold when I am ready to pull the trigger. It looks like a good diamond, I just like the other 3 better.

I really appreciate the help, hopefully when I am ready to purchase in the next few weeks these will still be available. If they aren’t available maybe I will be able to pick one out on my own with what I’ve learned and I won’t have to bother you again haha.

A: Very Good synopsis. If you would ask me, I would say to go for the G. It’s the one “upgrade” in this list that makes the most sense for a Cushion (between carat, clarity and color).

Q: I have 3 or 4 diamonds on my watch list, hoping they aren’t sold when I decide to purchase. I recently found out there is a diamond available to me that has been in the family for nearly 200 years, so I am in the process of trying to find out more about it (size, shape, etc). If this doesn’t work out and I end up buying one, I will send you an email for one last opinion. Thanks again!

A: A 200 year old diamond! That’s fascinating and quite rare. When you get details, please send them along. I’m very interested to hear.

Q: I am still waiting for my brother to get the family diamond checked out, but he said it is pretty small and is currently in a men’s ring. Since it is small enough to be in a men’s ring setting, I think it may be a little too small for me to use. So I am continuing to shop around online and will await information from my brother before deciding what to do. I am hoping to propose in a month or two, so I am trying to be ready once I hear from my brother. Below I have the diamonds I am looking at, and the ring I would like to put them in. Which one do you think is the best value? A few are a little above what I was looking at for budget, but they look to be a pretty good deal. Thanks for the help.

Ring- http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-2800.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – beautiful setting. Don’t forget to use the TADJ10 coupon code to get 10% off!

1272367- http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/D-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1272367.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 - I can’t tell that is in an SI1 in the picture. Can’t find anything wrong with this one, other than it is slightly smaller than the others. beautiful looking stone. Cushion cuts show off color very strongly, so this might be a great option for you.

1219738- http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1219738.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 - This appears to be a good diamond at a very good price. it does look nice and the price is great. Just keep in mind that the L/W ratio is not like the others.

1184584- http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1184584.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

1184586- http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1184586.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – I don’t like the way the pic looks on this one.

1261563- http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1261563.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – Ditto on this one.

These 3 appear to be very similar.

1280693- http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1280693.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 - This is an SI2, but appears to be fairly clean looking. What do you think? There are faint inclusions on the table. They will most likely be clean to the naked eye.

A: See comments above (in bold red type). I personally think the D SI1 is your best bet because as I mentioned below, cushion cuts show off a lot of color, so you’ll really benefit from buying a D color stone with the cushion cut.

…….

I just wanted to follow up with you. Did you make a decision yet? If so, I’d love to hear what you went with in the end!

Q: I think I am going to get the D SI1, it looks like a great stone and within my original budget. Oh and while looking around, I found the exact diamond also on jared’s website for $2000 more than james allen. I will hopefully be purchasing in the next week, I will let you know what I end up getting. Thanks again for all the help and information. I really feel like I got a lot better diamond than I would have if I was searching on my own.

A: Great to hear! Let me know how it goes.

Q: Just wanted to let you know that I ordered the ring today! I went with the D SI1 1.03 in the platinum ring. I used the coupon code you gave me for the setting, thanks! And that is also how JA knows you helped bring them business right? I can’t want to see the diamond and setting together. I will let you know what I think once I get it and will send you a picture of it. Thanks again for all the help! You definitely made this an easier search.

A: Thanks for the email! Congratulations! Please do let me know how it looks when it arrives. I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

Q: Got the ring today and it looks amazing!! The diamond looks beautiful, I think I am going to be really happy I went with the D. Thanks again for all your help!!

A: That’s great news! Do you think you might be able to do me a small favor? Would you be able to leave me feedback on ivouch.com? My site’s still pretty new and these reviews really help me build credibility with new readers. If you have the time and would be so kind you can access it directly with this link:

I just saw the feedback you post. You really went above and beyond the call of duty. I really and truly appreciate it. May you and your fiance share a life full of blessing.

Q: Not a problem, I meant every word. You were a big help, and I really appreciate it. I hope she loves it as much as I think she will, this next week and a half is going to go real slow. Thanks again!

A: Hi. Could you please send me the links to the two stones?

Q: Yes here are the links:

http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-diamond-ring?forceStep=DIAMONDS_STEP&builder=BYOR&pid=LD01579457

Thank you!

A: I would stay away from the “good” cut stone as it’s quite deep.

The other stone is nice, but I would be very hesitant buying an SI2 sight unseen – especially on a princess cut.

That stone is also very cheap which would lead me to believe it’s probably an ugly SI2.

Btw, this is precisely the reason why I recommend people buy from James Allen since they have magnified pictures of their diamonds so you can see the nature of the inclusions.

Here’s an SI1, for example:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1249097.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

It has a small black inclusion in the center of the stone. It’s most likely eye clean anyway, but you can imagine seeing this how an SI2 could be a lot worse.

Here’s what an SI2 could look like:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1288213.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

This is definitely visible to the naked eye.

Q: You know, I would have never looked at James Allen unless I came upon your site, and the pictures of the stones sure helps when you are not buying a VS2+ and H+ stone.

What are your thoughts on this. The price seems odd to me

Stone #1 is bigger, same color, better clarity, better cut, and yet $1500 cheaper. What am I missing?

1) http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VVS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1276867.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

2) http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS1-Good-Cut-Princess-Diamond-869519.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Thanks again for your help, so very much appreciated! I dont know a thing about diamonds and this is one of the biggest purchases of my life!

……

Have not heard back, but anyway, a quick update. I did but that first ring, the J VVS2 and given the 30 day return policy, feel comfy about it. I would never have checked out James Allen (always just used blue nile) had it not been for your site and your helpful email. Thanks again!

A: I’m sorry I didn’t get back to you. I’m in Israel, so I’m 7 hours ahead of EST.

Firstly, I’m glad you didn’t order the 2nd diamond. It had a very unusually shallow cut that would have made it look dull in real life.

Now, had I been able to answer you in time, I would have suggested you look for an I color diamond at least. A J color princess cut is going to have a very soft warm tint to it. Also, did you order it loose or with a ring? If you’re matching it with yellow gold, then it doesn’t matter at all. But if you’re matching it with white gold, and you think that warmth in the stone’s color will bother you, it might pay to cancel this order and I’ll help you find an I color.

Also, if you bought a ring, you can get 10% off the setting price with the coupon code TADJ10.

Let me know what you think! If you’d like to talk, you can call me at XXX-XXX-XXXX. It’s a local US number, but it rings here in Israel.

Q: Please dont be sorry! I am amazed that you are even replying to a stranger and being so helpful! I just figured that ring was so eye clean and nice looking that I should buy it. In the worst case, I pay $35 to ship it back to James Allen which is a low risk when I am looking to buy something that will cost so much.

You know, I called James Allen and they said that about the 2nd ring too — that the shallow cut would make it look dull. What do you mean by a “shallow cut” — how could you tell?

I did hesitate to order the J one since from your website, it recommended I and up on princess cuts, and I figured it would matter even more given the size. So I ordered it and will wait for it to come to make a decision. I think it arrives next week. I have seen J’s that are pretty darn clean (my friend calls them “borderline I’s”) and others that have that warm tint like you describe. From the picture online it looked pretty clear, especially compared to the 2nd one, so we will see.

Again, I dont know if you can tell James Allen that but you should tell them that I did buy that first ring (shipped to Palo Alto, CA if they want to confirm the order since I used a different email to buy) and I would have never bought from them had I not read your website. You deserve some credit for it. Your website is INCREDIBLY informative and clearly non promotional. The only reason you recommend James Allen is due to the online pictures, which in fact really did matter to me. Will see the ring, and if indeed it makes more sense to get the I color, I will definitely reach out for help.

Thanks Again!

A: I really appreciate the kind words, but it would be wrong for me to let you say those things without correcting you. Take a look at my article here to understand what I’m talking about:

http://www.truthaboutdiamonds.com/truth-about/truthaboutdiamonds-com/

As for the “shallow” question – shallow means that the depth of the stone (the distance from the table to the culet) as a percentage of its width is low. In the case of that stone, the depth is 62.6% which is abnormally low. A diamond needs a certain amount of depth to make sure the light properly reflects back out the top of the stone.

I think you have a good strategy re: the J color. With such a good return policy, it just makes sense. As you said, all you have to lose is $35.

Btw, did you buy this stone with a ring or was it loose? If it’s with a ring, did you use a coupon? If not, call them up right away and tell them you forgot to mention that you have a coupon. You can use TADJ10 to get 10% off the setting. They gave me that coupon to give to my readers.

I look forward to getting your report!

Q: Thanks for the link. But no, what I mean is that you are not recommending who is paying you the most. It is pretty clear that when you recommend James Allen because of the pictures, that is not a joke. As a consumer, I went to the page, and the pictures were core to my decision. I found the prices at Blue Nile better on things like a H VS1 or better round ring where I really don’t need to see the picture to make a decision. But on a J princess cut, pictures are key. And I never knew a site had pictures. I wonder why Blue Nile does not do this? Seems like an easy way to really up the customer experience.

So when you say 62.6% is low, what is the range I should be looking for?

I bought it with a platinum band — I heard about the white gold wearing away and don’t want to deal with that. And I did get the 10% off as well.

A: Well, I’m really glad you found my advice helpful!

Close to 70% is the ideal spot to be. So 73% on the stone you bought is just right!

Q: Hello! Love the site!! I’ve learned so much and thank you for so much great information. I’m not sure whether you answer questions without a service charge but i’ll ty anyway! I’m located in Canada and i’m really liking what I see on the James Allen website. I’ve read so many great reviews plus they have what i’m looking for (i’ll get to that later!). However, when I use the currency conversion calculator I notice I would be paying around $1000 in duty plus shipping. My local jewelery shop says they can create that diamond for me and all they need is a picture. I thought I was wary about ordering online but i’m even more skeptical about having a shop create a diamond just by looking at a picture. Would I really expect to get the exact same quality product? And would they most likely charge me a premium price because they had to create it specifically for me. I don’t want to end up paying more locally when I was trying to avoid duty charges. There is a James Allen in Boston which is in feasible driving distance, i’m not sure whether the duty charge would be any less by bringing it back across the border versus sending it in the air. If you could answer this i’d love to go ahead and show you what it is i’m interested in purchasing. I’d love your help and advice! Thank you so so much!!

A: Hi. I’m happy to help. I do not charge anything for answering questions. To understand how/why I do what I do, take a look at this article:

http://www.truthaboutdiamonds.com/truth-about/truthaboutdiamonds-com/

From what I understand, the currency converter over estimates the taxes on rings into Canada. Take a look at the comment posted on this article:

http://www.truthaboutdiamonds.com/2009/09/08/canadian-needs-help-getting-diamond-under-budget-avoiding-canadian-vat-customs/

You should read the article too as it discusses some ways to try to get around the taxes.

I’m not sure what you mean when you say “there’s a James Allen” in Boston. If there is a place with that name, it’s not related to the online store. But it doesn’t matter, because James Allen can ship to any Fedex facility with the “hold at facility” service. So you can just go in and pick it up. If you’re that close to the border, then I’m sure there’s a closer fedex location you could find.

Anyway, let me know what you’re looking for, and I’ll gladly help you find it at the best price possible!

Q: Thanks so much for the articles. Finding someone kind and knowledgeable who is willing to help a stranger is a rare find and i’m very appreciative of your assistance. Before stumbling onto your site I had this in mind:

Shape: Princess

Cut: Ideal

Color: E or F

Clarity: Vs1

Carat: 0.75 to 1.0

Depth: 65-73%

Table: Below 75% (ideally below 68%)

Budget: $5000-$6000 (Canadian Dollars…CAD)

After reading information on your site I’ve noticed that you speak highly of the value in choosing an H or I color and a Vs2 clarity for a princess cut. I am pretty flexible if this is a wise choice because I would like to get as close to a 1.0 carat as possible without sacrificing quality. A few of my best friends and colleagues have insisted that I get Vs1 clarity and E or F color but they have chosen round diamonds whereas my girlfriend definitely wants a princess cut. She has mentioned size before but talks little of cut or clarity so I do think size is important to her. Here are the links to a few I’ve had my eye on. #4 is a G color and I like what it looks like in the picture but haven’t read much on G color for a princess cut. Suggestions other than these would be greatly appreciated!!!

…..

I forgot to mention!!…..the diamond will be placed in a solitaire setting….I just haven’t decided on one yet. She wants yellow gold even though platinum is a better metal. She likes the look of it more. She showed me a picture of the Lucida setting from the Tiffany’s website and she really liked the look of that. Perhaps you’ve got a few in a mind that look great with a princess cut but I won’t overload you with that right now!! Thanks again for all your help…this means so much to me.

A: Firstly, if she wants yellow gold, then there’s absolutely no reason to buy a diamond higher than a J color. Save yourself the money. The yellow in the gold is going to reflect through the diamond anyway, so it’d be a complete waste to get anything higher than a J. That’s great news for you, as you can now either get a larger stone, or save the difference.

Also good news for you is that James Allen has a perfect Lucida replica. It’s here:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire-rings/ring/item_57-2793_design.asp?module=setting&a_aid=dmnd1357

It costs 525, but the TADJ10 coupon will take 10% off that.

There’s a great selection of J color 1.20s. Here’s a few I like:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1274243.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – great make. Nice small table

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1087674.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – sort of in between.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Q: Thanks so much for all of this. I never thought i’d be considering a J color diamond. I don’t mind paying a little extra for a higher color and going down a little in size. Would it really make absolutely no difference to even get an H or I? Even though I trust your advice I feel like i’m sacrificing quality for size. I just want to feel sure if i’m going to give up my search for E and F color diamonds. I like the 3 picks you provided for me. I think my favourite is the 1st one with the smaller table. They all fit into my price range very nicely.I might try a few more searches for 1.0 to 1.20 carats with J color and i’ll send them along to see if you like any as much or more than the 3 picks you gave to me. So far I think the first one is the winner but i’ll see what I can come up with. I had a question about the Lucida replica setting. I’ve been told that the Lucida setting doesn’t hold the diamond up very high. I don’t think my girlfriend realized this as she’s mentioned that she wants a solitaire setting that props the diamond up nicely. She just liked the Lucida in a picture online. Is this correct information concerning the Lucida? If so…is there a design that you know of that is similar to the Lucida but that props the diamond up higher? Again it would have to be yellow gold. I’m not sure whether 14k versus 18k makes any difference in terms of reflecting light etc. If you could answer this that would be great and tomorrow i’ll send you a few more picks in the 1.0-1.2 carat range with J color and see if you like any. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!

A: As far as the stone’s color goes, then yes, emphatically I’m telling you that to buy a high color would be a big waste. I have people often tell me, “I bought an F (or something similar) color diamond and in some light it looks yellow!” Until I make them realize that there’s something yellow in the room that’s reflected in the stone and that’s why in “some light” it looks yellow. Imagine if the entire diamond is itself surrounded by yellow!

As far as your question about Lucida goes, I wish I could give you a more informed answer, but truthfully, I have no idea. My professional experience is 99% loose diamonds 1% jewelry. If you guys are already open about this discussing ring styles and stuff, maybe just take her to a Tiffany store and have her see the Lucida in person.

Q: After your “emphatic yes” and re-reading your article about diamond color, I’ve decided to abandon my quest for E or F color. I decided to refine my search to I or J color. You might be shaking your head over this right now but I thought it would be a good decision if it doesn’t drive the price up much or…if she decides to switch to white gold down the road. If you still think this is a pointless decision let me know. That being said, I have a few links below with ones that I like. Actually, my search has been refined to a point that seems pretty much firm and set in stone now. If you enter the specifics listed below there are only 7 results that come up. Maybe you could tell me which one you would choose from the list. 1 or 2 of your past recommendations are featured here. Based on the search criteria below here is the link that shows the 7 diamonds that fall under this search criteria:

Shape: Princess

Color: I or J

Clarity: Vs1 or Vs2

Cut: Ideal

Carat: 0.93 to 1.30

Price: 3320-3950

1) I really got excited when I saw this one. It’s just over a carat, I color, ideal, Vs1, and the polish and symmetry are both excellent! I wish the table was under 70% but other than that I think this one seems great

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1270628.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

2) Similar to #1…slightly bigger, but a 72% table. It’s also I color, ideal and Vs1

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1261302.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

3) Probably my favourite of the 4 J color diamonds. This is one that you recommended last email as “nice make, good small table” Do you think any of the other J’s beat this one?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1274243.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Unless you think I should radically revamp my search criteria, I feel like the one I will choose exists in this list of 7 diamonds. If for some reason any of these would not go well with a solitaire 18k yellow gold ring let me know. Thanks so much for your help!!!! I’m getting close!!!!!!!

A: If it’s a real concern that she might want to switch to white gold or plat in the future, then you should definitely stick with an I color. A J in white gold will look a bit tinted.

If you go with an I, then I like the 1.06 better.

If you go with a J (ie, if you’re pretty sure you’re going to stick with yellow gold), then I like this one the best:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1087674.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

I’m not sure why – I could be biased because the photo was taken with a bit more care in setting up the lighting and everything, but it just really looks nice in the pic.

Q: I’ve been going over the options over and over and I think I also like the J color one the best. The 1.20 carat is a nice size over the 1.06 with the I color. I’m almost sure i’m going to go with this one but I will get back to you. I happened to stumble on one of your archived articles titles “best princess cut diamond for $3500″ and I really really like the one you posted. Great price, depth and table plus excellent polish and symmetry. This was your “daily diamond” pick for Jan. 25. I pasted the link below as a refresher.

http://www.truthaboutdiamonds.com/2010/01/25/best-princess-cut-diamond-for-3500-1-01-carat-i-color-vs2-clarity-ideal-cut-gia-certified-princess-cut-diamond/

When I clicked on this diamond it showed it as being out of stock. I don’t know if you know the right people to get this back in stock or whether you even think it’s a better pick than the 1.20 Vs1 J color diamond that you liked best out of my 7. Your thoughts on this will probably help me make my final decision as I can’t seem to find anything other than this that is seriously rivaling the 1.20 Vs1 J color. Thanks again for everything.

A: Unfortunately, “out of stock” means it’s been sold

I think the 1.20 is a fantastic choice. It’s really taking advantage of the fact you’re using yellow gold. It’s very smart and getting the most for your money.

Q: I really think this 1.20 is going to be the one. I’m just looking at rings now but think I will probably go with the cross prong Lucida replica. I will keep you posted. My last remaining issue is concerning the shipment (since I live in Canada). I read your article that you sent in your first email and it sounds like James Allen can ship this to a FedEx in Presque Isle, Maine which would only be a few hours drive. But how does that work…does that mean that the $1000 + duty charge that shows on the website would be subtracted? I know i’ll have to pay duty at the border but i’m assuming that would be about $500 roughly. So instead of the $1000 for duty as seen on the website, i’d probably be paying about half that at the border making it a good idea right? Let me know if i’m way off here. The second concern is that I need to have this by a specific date (April 30 we leave for a vacation). Since they will have to put my diamond and ring choice together, will there be a lengthy delay? I can’t afford the risk of cutting it close. Hopefully you can clear some of this up so that I can expect a smooth delivery. Thanks again for all of your help. I’m still blown away by this amazing service. Hope to hear from you soon!

A: Before I forget, you should use the TADJ10 coupon to get 10% off the setting (if you didn’t know already).

Now on to your questions:

1) I’m pretty sure the information on JA’s currency converter is not correct for Canada. It adds both customs and GST, but I’ve heard from readers that you are only charged GST, since the rings are covered by NAFTA. If you declare the ring at the border, then, in theory, there is no savings by having the ring shipped to Maine.

2) If you have JA ship you the stone, they don’t charge you customs + GST. Fedex does that on behalf of the Canadian government. They just show you the amount on the website so you’re prepared for what you’ll have to pay Fedex.

3) You should have no problem whatsoever getting the ring by April 30th. I think it only takes 2-3 weeks.

Q: Thanks again. I will definitely put the TADJ10 coupon to good use. I’m going to go with the cross-prong lucida replica you sent. I’m 90% sure i’m going to go with the 1.20 J color Vs1 but i’ve been making one last effort checking bluenile and a few others just to make sure there isn’t something else out there that i’ve been missing out on. If you would take a peek at these last few it would really help me to make my final decision. Thank you, thank you!!!

1) from bluenile…it’s less carat 1.05, also J color, an increase from vs1 to vvs2 but very good cut instead of ideal also excellent polish and semettry, and a decent table.

http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-diamond-ring?first_step=diamond&forceStep=DIAMONDS_STEP&track=image#diamonds_forceStep=DIAMONDS_STEP|builder=BYOR|pid=LD01461571

2) from adiamor with the price listed in canadian dollars…1.00 carat J color IF clarity!!, premium cut…not ideal 71% table…seems too good for the price? what’s up with this?

http://www.adiamor.com/D-9065123.htm

3) from adiamor as well. Again smaller size, J color, VVs1 clarity, premium cut..decent table

http://www.adiamor.com/D-9265541.htm

Mostly, i’m wondering if the upgrades in clarity are worth the tradeoff for premium cut versus ideal, and a smaller size. I’m comparing these 3 against this:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1087674.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

A: To be fair, I’m definitely biased against Adiamor, as I don’t have an affiliate agreement with them. BUt I do have an agreement with Blue Nile, so you can at least be 100% confident in my comparison with that stone.

Just like I steered you away from E/F colors because they would be wasted on the yellow setting, I’m also going to steer you away from VVS and IF clarity since they’ll be wasted on your human eye balls. The VS1 on the J color itself is overkill, there’s certain no reason to go any higher than that. And what do you get in return? A smaller, less brilliant stone. So there’s really no reason whatsoever to go with these other options.

You know my outlook on diamonds – all that matters is what your eye can see and appreciate. In that vein, the JA stone is far superior to these others.

Q: I appreciate your honest opinion. I feel confident with my choice and will choose the JA stone! I just didn’t want to have that awful feeling of wishing i’d have gone with something else after I made the purchase. You have been such a tremendous help in this overwhelming yet important decision in my life. I will recommend your help to everyone I know going through this process. I will be placing my order soon and want to make sure that you get credit for your help. Just wondering how I go about making sure they know that your assistance helped me in my choice.

A: Thanks very much for your concern. If you order from the same computer from which you’ve been communicating with me, it will take care of itself. Also, if you use the coupon, it’s like a fail-safe measure.

……

I hope all is well with you. I just wanted to follow up with you. Did you buy anything yet? If so, I’d love to hear what you went with in the end!

Q: Thanks for checking in! I’ve decided to go with this diamond and ring:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire-rings/ring/item_57-2793_design.asp?module=diamond&item=1087674&a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/yellow-gold-solitaire-rings.html

I’ve been checking around other sites and I feel confident about this choice. It was one of the original suggestions you gave me and I haven’t found anything else that I really like better. I’ve had a few banking issues I had to work out but I’m going to go ahead and order this in the next few days. If you have any last comments or concerns about either the ring or the diamond please let me know!! Thanks so much!

A: That’s really a fantastic combination. Let me know when you order!

…….

Hey. I see the stone you wanted is out of stock. I hope that means it was you who ordered it! Did you get the ring yet? I’d love to hear how it looks!

Q: Haha yeah it was me who ordered it and it’s on the way!! I will surely email you when I have it in my hands. Thanks again for all the help. This experience has been so smooth and so much less daunting than I had originally thought it’d be. I’ll be in touch soon!!

A: Great news! I look forward to your email!

Q: I’ve received my order and it’s perfect. I’m extremely happy with it. I can’t thank you enough for all your help. The appraisal that came with it listed it as $1000 more than what i paid which seems like a nice bonus! I just posted a review for my sales rep on iVouch and I couldn’t help but give you a special mention….I pasted my review below….

My experience with James Allen was amazing. Their website is the best i’ve seen, their products and prices were better than other top competitors such as Blue Nile and the service from the sales representatives couldn’t have been better. I was fortunate enough to have Tammy as my rep and the service I received was world class. I did most of my correspondence through e-mail and her kind and informative replies came back to me so fast that it really felt as if she was working exclusively for me. My order was being shipped to Canada so I had lots of questions concerning shipping, customs duties and taxes etc etc and all of my concerns were addressed by Tammy without ever being put on hold or passed from one agent to another like i’ve experienced with so many other companies. Months ago I thought ordering an engagement ring would be a daunting task but this was a walk in the park. I highly recommend James Allen to everyone. As a side note: I would have never made it to this point without the extraordinary help I received from Ira Weissman at http://www.truthaboutdiamonds.com/

This informative website provided me with an education about diamonds and allowed me to correspond with Ira and ask questions that would help me to make the best possible choice. Like the service reps at James Allen, Ira made me feel as if he was working exclusively for me….at no cost!!! You don’t get service like this anywhere. Mr. Weissman answered every question I sent to him and helped to point me in the direction of James Allen and i’m eternally grateful that he did.

A: That’s great news!!! Thanks so much for the email to let me know, and thanks for that great nod in your ivouch review. Could you help me out with something? I’m trying to figure out the tax situation for Canadians who contact me. How much tax did you end up paying in the end? Just GST/PST? Or did you pay a certain amount of duties as well?

Thanks again and CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Q: No problem, i’ll leave a review for sure! and you might hear from me again when it comes time to shop for wedding bands. I will also recommend you to anyone I know who is on the hunt for diamonds. The tax situation ended up being much better than I originally thought it’d be. Each province in Canada has their own GST/PST rate. Here in New Brunswick we have a single tax rate called HST (harmonized sales tax) which is essentially just a combination of GST/PST. Our HST rate is 13%. Since the ring and diamond were MANUFACTURED and SHIPPED from the United States I only paid HST (13%) tax on the grand total of the purchase. Because of The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) I was exempt from duties or VAT taxes because the product was manufactured and shipped from the United States. I believe this would have also been the case if it was manufactured and shipped from either Canada or Mexico. Had the product been manufactured outside of either the US, Canada, or Mexico, I would have had to pay 6.5% duty and THEN my 13% HST on top of that. James Allen emailed me a “north american free trade agreement certificate of origin” form which clearly indicated what I ordered and where it was manufactured and shipped from which would indicate to customs to not include any duties or additional taxes. I also chose to have it shipped to a Fedex hold-it location so James Allen emailed me a Power of Attorney form which I filled out and emailed back to them. This allowed Fedex to pick up my parcel and pay the outstanding taxes on my behalf. When the fedex agent picked up my parcel he called me and I gave him my credit card number and the amount I owed for the taxes was immediately billed to my credit card. When I arrived at the Fedex hold-it location I was just handed my order as there was nothing else to pay. I’m assuming all of James Allen’s products are manufactured and shipped from the US but the customer might want to ask first. Hope this helps!!!

A: I appreciate all the info about Canadian taxes. It makes things a lot clearer for me.

One style that is very popular nowadays is the “halo” style. The halo style is basically when you have a diamond pave-set frame around the edge of the face of the diamond set in the engagement ring. This is popular for a number of reasons. Firstly, all pave styles in general are very popular now and have been for a number of years now. But additionally, halo styles are popular because they give the diamond the appearance of being larger than it actually is.

James Allen offers several different “halo” style engagement rings. Many are a part of their designer “Meno MicroPave Collection.” But these rings are expensive, due to their brand name. But JA offers many similar styles in their regular engagement ring selection that are equally as beautiful.

One such example of a beautiful halo-style engagement ring in their regular ring inventory is their 18k White Gold Split Shank Pave Halo Diamond Engagement Ring.

What I like about this setting is that the split shank widens the footprint of the ring on the finger, yet it’s not big and bulky. So this ring will look great on fingers of all sizes, yet doesn’t look overly heavy with gold or platinum.

Q: Hello, I am currently looking for the best engagement ring possible within the budget of $5000-$7500. Princess Cut D-F Best Clarity Possible Currently been looking on Bluenile.com and mondera.com, can you recommend any other sites? Also are you aware if they offer insurance? Thanks.

A: Thanks for writing. You mentioned you wanted the best clarity possible and you didn’t mention anything about expected carat weight. So I’m going to take two separate tracks here. First, I’m going to show you the largest stones D, E, or F that are eye clean within your budget. Then, I’ll crank up the clarity, and we’ll try to get the largest stone keeping the clarity to a minimum of VVS.

Also, a word about different sites. I pretty much exclusively recommend James Allen. It is the only site that I know of that has actual magnified photos of their diamonds. Aside from that, though, they also have really great prices and the best customer service around.

Regarding insurance – I’m not sure I know any sites that sell insurance as well. Each site will provide you with an insurance appraisal, though. But it’s not hard to take care of on your own. Jeweler’s Mutual is the most popular company, I believe.

Regarding cut quality with princess cuts, there’s two approaches: 1) the classic approach, and 2) the new AGS approach. Conventional wisdom has always held that the nicest princess cuts had depths between about 65 and 73/74 percent and table sizes around the same size. 68-70 probably being the ideal range for depth, and under 70 the best for table. AGS (a certifying lab like GIA) came along and started offering cut grades for princess cuts, and they found with their own research that deeper princess cuts with smaller tables were more brilliant. So the stones I suggest to you mostly go according to the classic approach.

Here we go:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1275963.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – eye clean. Great make. Large stone.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1264037.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – ditto

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-SI1-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1276937.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1270386.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Now lets crank it up to VVS and see what we come up with:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VVS1-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1275208.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VVS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1268866.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

I know that’s a lot to absorb, but try to take a look at all these different options and let me know what you think.

Q: Thank you for your quick response, you weren’t kidding about responding within 24 hours. That being said, I really appreciate the effort you put in on the recommended diamonds. I apologize, I meant to also include that I want a 1 carat princess cut w/ a Tiffany setting(my girlfriend raves about princess cut).

As for the classical approach, should I just ignore the cut rating(ideal, premium, very good, etc) when looking at princess cuts not rated by AGS? How big of a factor should polish and symmetry be in my decision process?

Additionally, I was looking at depth and table according to your guidelines and it seems every diamond either has the ideal depth or the ideal table, but never both. Are they really that rare given your recommended specs?

Given the guidelines of the ring in question, do you recommend platinum or white gold for the setting? I have read numerous times platinum would better suit a Tiffany set princess cut, can you verify?

A: I generally do ignore the cut ratings offered on the online sites for princess cuts. GIA doesn’t give cut grades for princess cuts. The grades you see are the grades that the individual site gives for the stone based on where the stone falls out in a rubric of table and depth ranges.

I’m not sure what you mean when you say you couldn’t find a stone with the ideal range. All of the stones I recommended from James Allen are within the recommended range.

In terms of polish and symmetry – you can pretty much ignore them. Anything Good or better is perfectly fine – especially for a princess cut. There is no visual difference to the naked eye between Good pol/sym and Excellent pol/sym. Take a look at my articles on Pol and Sym:

http://www.truthaboutdiamonds.com/truth-about/diamond-polish/

http://www.truthaboutdiamonds.com/truth-about/diamond-symmetry/

I agree that platinum is probably the best. James Allen has a number of TIffany style settings. Just look for the ones that are labeled as “knife edge.” And don’t forget to use the TADJ10 coupon code to get 10% off the ring.

Please feel free to send any more questions. It’s my pleasure to help.

……

Just wanted to follow up with you – did you end up pulling the trigger on any of those stones I recommended? If so, I’d love to hear which one and how it went. If not, please let me know if there’s any other way I can help.

Q: I haven’t quit decided on one yet but I have been researching. I picked out a handful of diamonds that meet my specs and would appreciate it if you could give your own personal ranking of them. Also could you let me know if each one is eye clean or not? How are you able to tell? Are the photos for James Allen Virtual Loupe magnified at all without dragging the magnifying glass?

My search criteria:

Princess Cut
D,E,F Color
IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1,VS2 Clarity (Will go with SI1 if guaranteed eye clean but I can’t tell)
Excellent, Very Good, Good Sym/Polish
Carat Size .99 – 1.19 (closer to 1 carat the better)
Depth: 55.0-73.1
Table: 52.0-74.1

My ranking of what I liked:

1) http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VVS2-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1261306.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

This one is the most expensive but I don’t see any inclusions that really stick out. I am skeptical about the high table of 74%. Faint fluorescence, not good but according to your sight should not be noticeable?

2) http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-950945.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

I like the look of this one, good price, but it looks like there is a nasty inclusion right in the middle, is this eye clean?

3) http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-VS1-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1277455.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Expensive, high table, and a bigger diamond.

4) http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/D-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1207706.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Expensive, has a lot of cuts to it which makes it look cool. great table and depth but has a lot of dark spots(what are they?).

5) http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VS1-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-871373.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Great price, has a lighter look to it

6) http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1177858.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Great table, good price, what are the two dark spots? Has a darker look which i don’t like as much

7) http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VVS1-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1277451.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Little Pricier, has a lighter look which I like, would rank higher but it has a brown spot, what is that?

I am not sure if its just the lighting of each individual picture, but I have noticed that I tend to lean towards a lighter looking diamond. What causes the lighting difference in the pictures?

Finally, if you could please, find a best value for money 1 carat princess cut diamond within the range of 4k-7.5k. I am interested what you come up with. Ignore all other search criteria I gave above.

I look forward to hearing from you.

A: Let me hit your questions one by one.

Eye clean – I know from experience only looking at hundreds of thousands of diamonds both with a loupe and with my naked eye. yes, they’re definitely magnified even without dragging the thing. Look at the diamond’s LxW measurements. Draw that on a sheet of paper to see how little the actual size of the diamond is. Compare that to the size of the pic on your screen.

Comments stone by stone:

1) Faint flour is meaningless. Same as None. 74% table is a bit large. But it’s not something that affects sparkle, it’s really just a different look for the stone. Just to correct you on something, 74% table is not a measure of its “height.” 74% table means the table facet takes up 74% of the total width of the diamond.

2) The inclusion in the center is very far from being nasty. It’s 100000% eye clean (unless you’re a closet super-hero ) Take a look at my new article here: http://www.truthaboutdiamonds.com/diamond-clarity-chart/ for pics of the worst of each clarity grade. Otherwise, it’s a very nice stone.

3) Again, not crazy about the 74% table.

4) I love this stone. D is completely colorless. 100% eye clean VS2. Best cut out of any of these. Nice small table (I love small tables on princess cuts). It’s a real serious beauty.

5) 74% table again.

6) Another beautiful cut. Not quite as nice as the D (since it’s a bit deeper), but still really really nice.

7) Nice stone, but I don’t think it’s worth it to buy a VVS2 when you can get a VS2 that’s just as clean to the naked eye.

Your color question – I wrote the following to a reader recently. I think it addresses your question:

The reason I’m telling you all this is that each vendor takes his own pictures on his premises and uploads them to JA. That means about 20 different photographers are taking pictures in 20 different environments and uploading pics to JA. That’s why you’ll find picture quality and lighting is very inconsistent across their pics. The only thing I find these pictures useful for is determining whether or not an inclusion pattern will be clean to the naked eye or not. Color can’t really be ascertained from these pictures.

My pick for the best value is the following:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1269592.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Let me know what yout hink about my observations!

Q: Thank you so much, I believe I am going to go with number four then. I feel very confident in buying this particular diamond and don’t want to miss out on it. Is there anyway I would be able to put the diamond on hold until the end of the week( I know its doubtful but I thought I would ask lol)? If not, am I able to put part of the ring on my credit card and wire the rest from my bank account? How long do you think this stone will stay on the market?

A: For those questions, you gotta contact James Allens customer support! Good luck and let me know how it goes! I don’t remember if I mentioned it or not – but don’t forget to use coupon code TADJ10 to get 10pct off the setting.

Q: Yes, you did mention the discount, thank you! One last question. My girlfriend only wanted a 1 carat sized diamond, do you think there is a noticable difference between 1.12 and 1 carat? She does not want it to look too big or gaudy.

A: Nah. It’ll definitely look bigger than a 1ct diamond, but it’d only be noticeable if it was right next to a 1ct diamond. It’s certainly nowhere NEAR gaudy levels.

……

Did you pull the trigger on the 1.12? Did everything go OK?

Q: I am waiting for money to hit my account and should pull the trigger sometime this weekend. Do you feel I am making a sound purchase based on my budget of 5k-7.5k?

A: I’m confident that’s the best stone you’ll find for your budget. Let me know how it goes!

Q: Just thought I would let you know I have started the ordering process. I will let you know when I receive it. Thanks again

A: Excellent! I can’t wait to hear your report. Which ring did you match with that stone, btw?

Q: went with the platinum 2mm comfort fit. Thoughts?

A: It’s going to look great! I look forward to getting your report.

Q: Sorry to keep pestering you, but what are your thoughts on engravings on the inside of the ring? Will this take away form the ring? Thanks.

A: No, why would it? It’s on the inside of the ring!

…..

Did you receive the ring yet? If so, I’d love to hear your impressions!

Q: Apologies on waiting to get back to you. I received the ring and got it appraised by an independent jeweler. Not only was I impressed(of course i would be) but the appraiser who had been in the business for 35 years was blown away by this particular princess cut. So, THANK YOU, Ira, for you excellent recommendation and for all the help along the way. I hope all is well and good luck with everything!

Oh and I forgot to mention, I proposed and my fiance was thrilled beyond belief

James Allen also has a large variety of engagement rings to choose from to pair with today’s daily diamond selection. If you love the pave styles that have a great flashy “bling” look, then look no further than James Allen’s 18k White Gold .66ct Pave Set Rounded Diamond Engagement Ring. This ring, with its three rows of pave diamonds almost all the way around the shank, has unsurpassed sparkle and fire. The total weight of all the pave stones is an incredible 0.66cts!

As always with our Daily Diamond selections, today’s stone is completely clean to the naked eye. Today’s stone is quite unique in that it’s significantly larger than most other 2 carat cushion cut diamonds. This is due to its truly ideal depth percentage of only 60.5%. This gives the stone a depth that’s usually fitting only a round brilliant diamond. So for the price of a fancy shape, you get the spread of a round. It’s really a special find.
