Q: Hello, As with alot of people, I been quite overwhelmed with info during my shopping experience. Your website is a breath of fresh air. The ring I want is http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-162.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 I am looking at spending 6000-8000 on the stone. I am basically looking for the best bang for my buck. I am quite flexible with all aspects including shape (maybe a princess cut might look nice on this ring – but I guess the safe choice is round type). note: I did order an 1ct F IF triple X from blue nile for close to $12k.. I am currently in the process of returning it after reading your website! I look forward to your advice.

Q: Hi Ira,

First, great site, I’ve been gleaning information for the past 4 months or so researching diamonds for my upcoming purchase. From time to time I look other places but always end up coming back for the quality and truthful insight. I’ve got a budget of $5000 and am looking at going with J.A. because of their return and upgrade policies. I’ve been searching for stones in the 1.10 to 1.30 carat range. I’m looking at this ring and stone in particular:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire-rings/ring/item_57-1906_design.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1274572.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

But was hoping to get a few other suggestions from you. I’ve pretty much been following all of your suggestions on standards for cut, color and clarity and seem to gravitate toward a higher quality polish. My G.F. wants a diamond. Thanks for your help in advance.

Q: Hello Ira, First, thank you for your site. It’s proven quite helpful already.

My question concerns potential vendors. I live in Los Angeles where we have a wholesale jewelry district downtown. An acquaintance, who actually picked out her own , swears that I would be a fool to not use one of these local vendors. Is she right? (And if so, would you happen to have anyone here that you recommend?)

I love to buy online but I’m still not entirely convinced that buying a diamond online is the wisest option. Especially with the local options reportedly being so great. Ultimately, of course, I just want the best deal. Perhaps better deals will, in fact, be found online? I intend to go in soon to see for myself and have some basis for comparison, but I’d love to know what to expect. Any insight here would be very welcome. And I thank you in advance.

Best – D

PS – I anticipate going for a round cut, 1.25 or so Carat, and trying to get the cleanest, clearest one I can for *hopefully* under $8k. But that’s just an initial direction. I definitely do not intend to spend more than ten grand, and would be thrilled to find something great that’s closer to five! Anyway, thanks again for your help.

One of ’s most popular ring styles is their White Gold Cross Prong Diamond Solitaire Ring.  I believe it’s such a popular style because it has a very average width which fits most fingers (it’s not too narrow and not too wide).  Plus, the cross prong design offers a bit of uniqueness without getting too wild looking.

So if you like this basic design, but you’d like to crank it up a notch and throw in a bit of bling as well, then you should try their  18k White Gold Cross Prong Princess Cut Diamond Engagement Ring.  This ring design offers the same classic look as the solitaire version mentioned above, but with 3 accent princess cut diamonds on either side of the shank.  This provides the perfect little burst of light if you’re looking for that little something extra.

One of the most common styles these days is the pave “halo” style e-ring.  The typical halo setting features a pave studded frame that hugs the contour of the center stone.  This look is great for two reasons.

Firstly, it instantly adds about 3 millimeters to the diameter of the diamond.  This might not sound like a lot, but consider that a round diamond is about 6.3-6.5mm across and a 3 carat round diamond is about 9mm across.  That’s quite an upgrade in size!

Secondly, the pave halo look adds a beautiful ring of sparkle filled “bling” around the center stone.  It’s like shinning a spotlight on your center stone.

has a number of halo styles for different diamond shapes (obviously, because the halo fits the contour of the diamond, each setting is unique to a different shape of diamond).   The one I selected today is just one of several that has available for round diamonds.  The style today is the following: 18k White Gold Pave ME29 by Danhov Designer Eternity Engagement Ring.

You might mistakenly believe that solitaire style engagement rings – those rings without any diamonds on the ring other than the main center stone – are fairly straightforward and don’t vary much in style.  But nothing could be further from the truth!

Within the solitaire category, there are many variations of looks.  Some bands are wider, some are more narrow.  Some are higher up (cathedral), some strive to be as flush with the finger as possible.  Some are ornate with filigree, some are plain and polished.

Today’s setting recommendation is a great example of how unique you can go with a solitaire setting.  Today’s ring, the 18k White Gold Wide Contour Solitaire Ring Setting from , features a double contoured band that gives a sleek and unique look.

This ring, in either white gold or platinum would match wonderfully with today’s diamond.

If what you’re looking to accomplish with your purchase of an is uniqueness, then sometimes you need to think outside the box.  There are definitely a fixed number of style groups when it comes to engagement rings.  You have tapered baguette side stones, pave halo, pave on the shank, solitaire, etc.  But aside from these easily categorized style groups, you occasionally have styles that are so unique they defy classification.  Today’s ring is once such design.

Today’s selection features a double shank that is slightly split just before it reaches the basket at the top of the ring. Surrounding the basket is a artfully woven strip of gold studded with ideal cut pave stones.   This creates a fiery pave style look but with the added beauty of this uniquely artistic design.

You can view the ring on JamesAllen.com here: 18k White Gold Pave Frame Split Shank Engagement Ring.
