Archive for Radiant Cut

The rumors are true. Drew Barrymore’s beau Will Kopelman popped the question over the holidays with a stunning radiant cut diamond engagement ring – just under four carats of colorless sparkle! The diamond is perched on a thin diamond-covered band.
Kopelman enlisted the help of London-based jeweler Graff Diamonds. We are not too surprised about his classy taste considering he works as an art consultant.
The happy couple has been dating for about a year and got engaged in Sun Valley, Idaho while on vacation.
This will be Drew’s third stint as a bride. She says this time around she is in a more “stable” time in her life. She told InStyle magazine, “It’s really positive. I’m super happy. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve really wanted to find more balance and calm.”
We wish the newly-engaged couple many years of wedded bliss together, and a marriage that sparkles just as much as Drew’s new bling!

Q: Thank you very much for your education on the diamond industry. I had done a good bit of research before a friend recommended your site, and i was well prepared for the second-tier learning you offer. I also appreciate the James Allen recommendation, that site is great.
I am looking at a fixed budget purchase for the highest quality diamond i can get. that budget is 8000 and down…with 8000 being the most i really want to pay but doesnt mean a nice well balanced 6k diamond is out of the question at all.
I am looking for exclusively Cushion or Radiant diamonds, my real preference being the square cushions and am thinking i can possibly get something around 1.1-1.2 carats, G color (though you recommend slightly higher for these cuts), VS2/SI1…it is going to be set on a white gold ring with two .15 carat pears on the side, and the band tapers into the point on the pears which face away from the center stone.
I look forward to your insight, thank you! I realize the cut makes it more difficult but that is her desire.

Q: Hi Mr. Weissman,
You have a wonderful site and I really appreciate your taking the time to assist the diamond consumer.
Could you let me know what you think about this diamond I’m considering purchasing? I’m wondering how visible the inclusion in the center of the stone will be to the naked eye. In the photo it appears to be somewhat hidden by some of the dark shading in the stone.

While I agree that a F color isn’t generally necessary, I’m planning to put it in a pave setting with side stones that’ll be in the F-G range.
Thank you for your time.

Q: I’m looking for a square cut diamond in an antique or antique reproduction setting. I generally prefer the radiant cut, but the attached ring is assher and I really like the setting.

I really like this ring. It’s over 2 carats. My first concern is color – J – while you recommend H or better for emerald / assher cuts. Should I be concerned about the color of this particular stone? It looks fine to me in the photo.
I guess my other concern is will the whether I will be disappointed in the radiance / sparkle of this stone. I do prefer the more organized pattern of the assher cut over the somewhat disorganized pattern of a radiant cut, but what you gain in order / structure you lose in sparkle, so I guess it’s a bit of a tradeoff.
If you had any thoughts, I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks.

Q: I am looking at having a custom engagement ring and wedding band made but am still chewing on the best center diamond for the engagement ring. The diamond style of choice is radiant but as you have so aptly pointed out on your website, there is no ”official” grading system that is consistent for all diamond shapes.
My main trouble right now is related to the optimum table/depth percentages for a radiant diamond. I am fairly comfortable with the other baseline characteristics (VS1 or better, H or better, VG cut or better, 0.5-1 carat) that I have been looking at.
I realize that light performance related to how light moves around the diamond is very key to how it looks hence the table/depth question.
Additionally the center diamond will be mounted down into a setting with surrounding diamonds similar to the Tiffany Novo or Ben Bridge #10811669 setting. The primary difference between what I am looking to have made and the examples is that the center diamond will not stick up as far since I don’t want it getting caught and the ring damaged (my girlfriend is a teacher).
My budget right now is the 2-2.5K range for the center diamond (The settings custom made with the jewelers I have talked to are averaging 1.5K).
Any advice about the table/depth, etc is greatly appreciated. If you have additional concerns regarding the light performance with the center diamond being more captive than usual, please feel free to let me know.
Thank you

Q: I’m looking for a solitaire diamond ring for my wife. My budget would ideally be under $4000-4500 and I would like the best stone for the money. I’m looking at stones between 0.80 – 0.95 carat that are round or princess cut. My wife likes sparkly stones, so it would need to have an ideal (very good, excellent cut). The lowest I would like to go in color is G-H and clarity can be anywhere from VS1 to SI2, but perfectly the stone should be eye-clean or almost eye-clean.
What online retailers would you suggest?
I was told Costco sells pretty good diamonds is that true?
I read your article about clarity where you say to go for 60/60? Would that work for a princess cut stone?
What do you think of this ring?

Which stone would be visually bigger provided they have the same proportions round or princess cut?
Thanks in advance and I cannot wait to hear from you!
