Q:  I’m looking for a square cut diamond in an antique or antique reproduction setting. I generally prefer the radiant cut, but the attached ring is assher and I really like the setting.

http://antiqueengagementrings.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=2527

I really like this ring. It’s over 2 carats. My first concern is color – J – while you recommend H or better for emerald / assher cuts. Should I be concerned about the color of this particular stone? It looks fine to me in the photo.

I guess my other concern is will the whether I will be disappointed in the radiance / sparkle of this stone. I do prefer the more organized pattern of the assher cut over the somewhat disorganized pattern of a radiant cut, but what you gain in order / structure you lose in sparkle, so I guess it’s a bit of a tradeoff.

If you had any thoughts, I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks.

Q: Hi- I have discovered your site and am intrigued. I’m hoping to buy an engagement ring within the next month, quicker if possible. My budget is between 10K and 12K for the ring and the band. I was hoping to get a center diamond of approximately 1.5 carets for this price. Do you think this is possible? Do you have any specific diamonds you recommend? I think I have a band picked out and have used your diamond locator, but it’s tough to find the perfect one. Also, I thought I saw something about getting a discount through James Allen if I ordered through your site, how does that work? Let me know what you think. Not sure how this works, but am free anytime to talk on the phone or by email if you have any free time. Thanks

Q: Hello, I have been dating my girlfriend for 8 and a half years ever since the beginning of high school, and now that we are both graduated and working, it’s time to propose. On top of that, we are taking a trip to europe in the first week of February, and I would love to have a ring to propose with in Paris!

I think I have decided to buy online. The lack of tax on most of the online retailers is a big price advantage over local jewelers, and I would love to spend that extra cash on a better diamond. I am looking to spend about 8000 dollars or less on a round diamond, with an absolute max around 8500.

I am a scientist, so I love reading about the specs of a diamond, but I am still unsure how important each is. After all the reading, I think I would like something with VS1 clarity, G color, and ideal cut or better, but from reading your wonderful website it seems I could get away with less in the color and clarity categories. I looked at James Allen’s Diamond Color Tool, and the jump from G to H color seemed more noticeable than the other jumps.

After looking at so many rings, I really like the Nouveau Diamond Ring in Platinum at BlueNile.com. Since I like this setting the most, it feels like I am limited only to the diamond selection of Blue Nile. What do you think? It doesn’t seem possible to order just the setting from Blue Nile. If Blue Nile’s diamond selection isn’t good, do you know of any close alternatives where I might get a similar setting and a better deal on a diamond?  What’s your opinion of Blue Nile’s diamond collection? They have a 1.20 carat, VS1, G color, with strong blue flourescence for $7795. Is this a good deal?

I know your website says that the strong blue will make the G color actually look worse. Is that why this diamond is much lower priced than other 1.20 carats? I also like the color blue so I keep wondering if a strong blue flourescence is really a bad thing? I think I’d like to maximize the size of the diamond within my price range, but I also don’t want to sacrifice on the color or clarity too much.

Yesterday Blue Nile also had a 1.38 carat, VS2, H color for just 50 dollars more than the 1.20 I mentioned above. Which one do you think is the better deal? Sadly, the 1.38 seems to have sold today so that is no longer an option. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated! I am in somewhat of a rush since I leave for Europe on Feb 27th. Is this cutting it too close? I have really enjoyed reading your website, and I will recommend your site to anyone looking at diamonds in the future.

Q: I am looking at engagement rings and have budgeted $5000 for the diamond (round shape). I am planning on placing the diamond on a setting with sidestones similar to this link:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-1908.asp

The sidestones are color G-H. Is it necessary for the main stone to be better or equal color to the sidestones? For example, must I buy at least an H or G color stone? Or would an I or J suffice?

This was the best diamond i could find so far.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI2-Premium-Cut-Round-Diamond-1251654.asp

I would like the diamond to be “eye clean” and for it to look good on the setting i chose above. Please provide any pointers or recommendations regarding the ring and diamond choice above. The ring size is 6.75. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Your webiste has been very informative and helpful. Is there a better diamond for my price range?

A: Ok, Peter.  I’m back home now.  Here’s what I think:

I checked the ring, and since the sidestones are significant in size, and not tiny one-pointers, the color is significant.  So, no, I don’t think you should go down to I or J.  If you had picked a pave style ring, I would say you could go down, but these stones will show the difference in color.

So I think your best bet is an H color.  It’s either the same as the side stones, or one grade lower, which is not noticeable when the diamonds are face up.  Whenever you match diamonds for sets, you can always have a grade or even a grade and a half differential in color and the set will still match.

I think you actually made a great choice.  I looked for H colors with either SI2 or I1 clarity, and I didn’t find anything better than the G you found.  I especially like the really spready make on your pick.  It’s also really clean for an SI2.  The inclusion is all on the side.

There’s only one stone that MIGHT be a better choice.  There’s a 1.51 H I1 but there’s no picture.  Here’s the link:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-I1-Premium-Cut-Round-Diamond-1200260.asp

Unfortunately, there’s no picture.  But if you want, I can contact JA customer service for you to request they take a picture.  It might take a few days, but it’s probably worth the wait because if it turns out to be a nice I1, you’d be getting a much bigger stone.

Q: Thanks for the prompt reply.  I would actually consider the 1.51 ring if there was a picture of it.  I attempted to make the request on the online form at James Allen website.  I’m not 100% set on the ring choice yet.  It’s the one that first popped out at me when looking at rings online.  I would consider a half-pave set if it would compliment a larger/better stone (ex. I or J color).

I plan on buying a ring within the next couple of weeks, so I do have time to wait for the photo on the 1.51 carat ring.  I am also going to try different ring settings and stone combinations.  I’m sure i’ll email you back when I narrow down my final stones for a second opinion.  Thanks for the help.

One quick question.  Would you recommend white gold or platinum for the ring?  My idea was to use the extra money towards the stone and just go with 18k white gold.

A: Hey Peter.  The honest truth is, my experience is very focused on loose diamonds.  I never worked in retail or general jewelry.  It was hard-core diamond wholesale trade.  So I can’t really answer your question about plat vs. gold.  From my perspective, it’s always about getting a bigger diamond, so I would say save your money on the ring and use it for a bigger rock.  For me, the ring is just a vessel to display the diamond.  But perhaps I’m biased that way because my experience is all about the diamond.

But it terms of utility, I really don’t know which one to recommend.  I don’t know if one upkeeps better than the other, etc.

Please let me know what the pictures like on that stone.  I can tell you with a fair amount of certainty if the stone will be eye-clean or not.

Best Regards!  And congratulations!

Q: Hello Ira,

So it seems that the inclusions on the 1.5 carat I1 diamond are visible to naked eye per James Allen representative. Her message is below.  So now I’m kinda thinking of these two diamonds for this setting:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-1908.asp

diamond#1:

1.23 G SI2 $5380

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI2-Premium-Cut-Round-Diamond-1251654.asp

OR

diamond #2

1.20 G SI2 $5460

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1259614.asp

The second one is triple excellent, but not sure it’s worth the extra money.  It also has laser inscription registry. Not sure if that is good or bad if the stone is laser inscribed with serial #. The second stone may have a cleaner looking GIA report, fewer inclusions, but not sure if that makes a difference (ie. if it will be cleaner looking to the naked eye)

What do you think?  My alternative is to go for a different setting (so i can get largest stone I can find for my $5000 budget). Then I could consider I and J color stones.  Not sure what to do at this point.

A: I just looked at the two diamonds (and no, I didn’t drink that much :)  The cheaper stone, in my opinion, is definitely the better stone.  Firstly, it’s bigger (6.99 vs 6.84) and second, it’s going to look bigger than that because it has a 60% table.  It still has an excellent cut grade, so it’s going to be just as nice as the other one.  With the other stone, you’re just paying a premium for a pretty looking certificate (triple excellent).  Polish and Symmetry Good or better all looks the same to everybody (yours truly included) except for gemologists with microscopes.

I say to go for it, unless you find a setting you like with really small side stones as you mentioned.  Then I’d be happy to help you find a bigger I or J color.

Q: I agree with your assessment that the 1.23 carat stone was better.  I was ready to purchase it, but wanted them to pull the stone and examine it before i ordered it to make sure there were no visible inclusions. (should i not have done that?)  They pulled the stone and informed me via the online chat feature that it had no visible inclusions.

I go ahead and try to order it online. “Diamond unavailable” it says. I can’t believe it! Next, I contact the chat customer service to see if maybe by pulling the diamond for inspection, they might have removed it from the online inventory.  They said they would check and call me back…still no answer. Bad news, looks like someone purchased the stone or maybe the person inspecting it decided to keep it for himself.  Who knows?  Feel a little bummed out.

But I know the inventory changes daily.  Perhaps I’ll check back later today to see if there is something similar. Or maybe pick a different ring setting and go for a larger stone.  Thanks for all your help.  If I do find another stone, i’ll email you for second opinion.  Can’t believe i missed out on this stone by minutes… weird that someone would be in the market for the same specifications i’m looking for…

Update:
I checked back after several hours and found the diamond I wanted was listed as available.  So i purchased it right away.  Thank you very much for your assistance. The ring should be here by next Wednesday.  Hopefully it’s all good, but they do have a 30day return policy.  Biggest online purchase to date… Thanks again!

A: Hey Peter.  I’m really happy you ended up getting the diamond in the end! Best Wishes!

Hello Ira,

From National Jeweler:

Disruptions in supply coupled with decreased demand mixed with expectations for future recovery in demand will act together to keep the status quo of price volatility in the platinum market.

Q: Apologies in advance for this extended question.

My girlfriend wants a three stone engagement ring made of emerald cut diamonds, a centre stone of approx 0.9 carat with the long edge of the stone running parallel with the finger, the two side stone set with the long edge set perpendicular to the main stone all in a rub over setting. Despite an extended tour of Hatton Garden jewellers we didn’t manage to see any rings of this design although I am quite happy to have it made. Regarding the above I have a number of questions.

I have seen 2 diamonds on Blue Nile suitable for the main diamond (both with a L/W of 1.5 as this is the ratio she wants). The first is;

0.9 carat
VG cut
I colour
VS1 clarity
6.85×4.55×3.08 size
£1909 ($2860) price

Second;
0.91 carat
VG cut
G colour
VS2 clarity
6.88×4.54×3.13 size
£2445 ($3680) price

The difference between the two is almost $1000, presumably down to the colour as the cheaper diamond has less inclusions. Would your average punter be able to tell the difference, is it ‘worth’ the extra money?

The two side diamonds will probably be about 0.25-0.3 carat each, any larger and I think the ring would be to broad. Is there any point getting certificated diamonds or should I just leave this to the jeweller to find a matching pair of the right size. I have looked on Blue Nile and James Allen but the smallest matching pair are about 0.5 carats each. I have seen two diamonds on Blue Nile that are very similar in specification (see below), just a very small difference in the dimension and level of polish (VG and excellent respectively) would these look like a matching pair?

0.24 carat
VG cut
G colour
VS1 clarity
4.13×3.13×2.15 size
£184 ($276) price

0.24 carat
VG cut
G colour
VS1 clarity
4.08×3.07×2.11 size
£196 ($294) price

Apologies in advance for this extended question.

A: Before I give you my full answer: will the ring be plat/white gold or yellow gold?

3-stone-ring-drawingQ: Platinum. Sorry one more thing, as I said previously the girlfreind wants a rub over setting (I attach a sketch I have drawn of the ring) as it wont catch on her clothes, she would prefer the sides to be fully enclosed. Does this effect the ‘sparkle’ or shine of the diamond being enclosed like this.

A: First of all, congratulations and thanks for writing! I really hope I can help you out. Unfortunately, with an emerald cut, you really do need to buy a diamond with a high clarity grade. Since the stone doesn’t have “brilliant” facets, but rather stepped facets, it’s very easy to see what’s floating around inside the diamond material. I did a quick run-through of James Allen’s inventory (since they have pictures) to see if any of the SI’s were decent. But since they were almost F colors anyway, none of them were really any cheaper than what you found. Especially considering the extra shipping fee and %1 commission they charge for international shipping.

Since the ring will be Platinum, I’m afraid I’d have to advise you to go with the “G” color stone. This is also due to the fact that it’s an emerald cut. Since there are no brilliant facets that break up the light, the color is much more easily seen. An I color will definitely have more of a “warm” feeling to it compared to a G color in an emerald cut.

I went on BN UK and checked the details of the stone in question, and it reads very nicely. The only thing that concerns me is that a VS2 can still be quite noticeable, especially in an Emerald cut. If you take a look at my site in the “Truth about Clarity” article, you can see a good example of this. And that’s a round cut! In any event, I would say go for it, and if the diamond has a black center inclusion, you can always return it within 30 days.

Regarding the side stones, in your drawing the side stones take up about 40% of the length of the center stone along each side. If you use the 1/4cts you picked out, they would take up about the same, so it should have the same balance as the drawing (6.88 length of center stone / 3.10 width of side stones). As for whether they match or not, I would need to see the rest of their parameters. Would you mind sending me the links to those 2 stones? One thing you might want to consider, though, is getting stones that are slightly lower in color (1, 2 grades max) than they center stone. It will make the center stone really pop out at you.

Unless your jeweler is a reliable wholesale type operation, you probably won’t save any money having him source the emeralds.

As far as the setting goes, a bezel setting (what you are calling “rub over”) won’t affect the diamonds beauty. But just keep in mind that emeralds don’t “sparkle” so much regardless of their setting. They’re not designed for sparkle.

I hope this helps! Please follow up with the side stone parameters.

A: Firstly thank you very much for taking so much time in your reply. This represent a sizable outlay for me and the advice is really appreciated. Interesting to know that the diamonds can be returned. I found the two quarter carat diamonds on BN UK. I have put the details of the diamonds below including the stock number. Hopefully this is enough for you to find them. If not there is an option to ‘email to a friend’ which i guess sends a link to the page.

Once again thank you for your help.

A: I checked the two diamonds, and their parameters match up quite nicely. Just fyi, I was double checking that their table % and depth % were a match as well. The depth % is exact, and the table is only off slightly (which is fine). As I’m sure you did, I checked to see if there were any small stones at slightly lower colors, but unfortunately there aren’t. This should make a beautiful ring! It’s a wonderful way to start off your lives together!

As I mention on my website, I never ask for any kind of payment from the people I advise. The only thing I ask — if you’ve found my advice helpful — is to click on an “affiliate link” of mine before you make your purchase. An affiliate link basically tells Blue Nile that I referred you to their website (it works for 30 days from the day of the “click”). I will then earn a 5% commission on the sale. You, of course, will still pay the exact same price. In fact, you’ll never notice any difference at all to your order.

Thanks again, and I really hope I was helpful!

Best Wishes for a Loving Happy Marriage! (We just celebrated our 10th anniversary this year!)
