Q: hey Ira, I’m looking to find a pear shaped diamond to fit in a pretty wide (6-8mm) setting. What is most important to look for in Pear shapes? Where can i make concessions since I obviously want to get the largest stone because of the wide setting. thanks have a great day

Unfortunately, the picture of today’s diamond appears quite hazy. It’s clear (since the haziness also covers the parts of the picture surrounding the diamond itself) that the lens was smudged, and it’s not the diamond itself that is cloudy. As I’ve mentioned in other areas on the site, James Allen’s photos are really only good for judging if a stone will be clean to the naked eye or not. They cannot be used to judge color, cut, or fluorescence. The picture is clear enough, though, that I can still see where the inclusions are and how strong they are. And it is clear to me that this stone is eye clean.

Best I1 Clarity Diamond for $17000: 3.05 Carat H Color Pear Shape

Buying I1 clarity diamonds is not possible with other vendors – most don’t offer then, but even those who do don’t offer magnified pictures. Since the majority of I1s are not eye-clean, you’d most likely wind up being disappointed.

Also, I don’t recommend you buy an I1 without consulting myself or another expert. I am confident that I can tell whether or not a diamond will be eye-clean based on its virtual loupe photo. But this is only because I have looked at so many diamonds through a loupe and without that I have the strong sense to be able to distinguish which magnified stone will be eye-clean and which stone will not be eye-clean.
