Q&A: Looking for a Diamond Down Under

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Q: Hope you are doing well. I have been reading up on diamonds for a while and stumbled upon your website and have to say that the honest information provided here is refreshing and very appreciated.

I’m living in Melb, Australia and am looking for a good engagement ring yet at the same time giving my woman the best I can offer.

Is your goal cheapest price for given parameters, or best diamond for fixed budget?
- Best Diamond for fixed budget (.5 carat and above).

Shape
- Round Brilliant

Desired Color Range
- E and below (Leaning towards F-I)

Desired Clarity
- VVS2 and below (Leaning towards VS1-VS2)

Budget
- AUD$2,500 (Including setting).

Anything else you might feel is relevant
- She is a quite short and so her hands are not very big, neither are her fingers very long so I’m not sure if a larger diamond (to me honestly anything above .75 is large!) would look good on her.

I have been taking a look at the James Allen and Blue Nile website and have short-listed a few (from James Allen). However, I would still appreciate an expert opinion given the vast range of diamonds available!

Would it be very difficult for them to send it over to Melbourne and would I have to pay extra charges if so?

Sorry if I come across as indecisive and long-winded. Thank you for your time and looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Q: Is this a decent diamond?

Can you make any other recommendations in that price range? I like the radiant because it is a little different than the traditional round.

Q:I am looking for a round, cushion, or oval shape diamond under $2000. As far as clarity is concerned, anything ”eye-clean” is fine. Of course, I would like the biggest diamond, I don’t like the faint yellow tint. I read on your website that a medium fluorescent can help a lower color diamond look better, but I’m still hesitant because I want a diamond that sparkles. I was looking at these but if you have any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Q: Hi, Great site. You really helped me with my purchase from Jamesallen.com. I was looking for a princess cut diamond in the $4500 range. My citeria were ~0.75-1.2 carat, D-G, IF-VS1, ideal or premium cut. As you see from the diamonds I narrowed it down to, I let the clarity slide to VS2 upon advice from your site. The two diamonds were:

And

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1279502.asp

I chose the first one on the following criteria:

slightly better color (F vs. G)
slightly better price (it was $20 less)
slightly larger size
better polish and symmetry.

Unfortunately, premium cut vs. ideal cut for the G color stone.

Both seem like excellent stones, but I wonder if I should have sacrificed the ideal cut (64% vs. 70% table) for the better color.

The ring was a comfort fit 2.5 mm solitare platinum setting:

Q: First off, your website has been tremondously helpful for me-a first time diamond buyer.

I hugely value cut and I have been looking at Blue Nile and their signature cut. Obviously, I am paying more for the signature brand. So, I used the more stringent table(60.1 to 61.9) and depth%(55 to 57) values for the signature to filter out some ideals on Blue Nile and James Allen. Am on the right track to get the shiniest diamond?
