Q: First off, your website has been tremondously helpful for me-a first time diamond buyer.

I hugely value cut and I have been looking at Blue Nile and their signature cut. Obviously, I am paying more for the signature brand. So, I used the more stringent table(60.1 to 61.9) and depth%(55 to 57) values for the signature to filter out some ideals on Blue Nile and James Allen. Am on the right track to get the shiniest diamond?

Q: I am currently looking for a loose 1 Carat (or slightly larger) Princess Cut Diamond with the following criteria:

Ideal Cut (I realize GIA doesn’t rate this for princess cuts)
D-F Colour
VVS1-VS2
65-70% Table
65-73% Depth
Excellent-Very Good Symmetry/Polish
Budget $6000-$8000

I have been reading the information on your site and have taken your advice on searching for diamonds on the James Allen website. I think I have found one I like but would appreciate your opinion on this specific diamond and any others you might recommend. I know you have said before that the images are already magnified without the use of the loupe but I do see a black spot on this particular diamond and just wonder if by chance you might be able to see it with the naked eye?

Q: Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out.

I’m currently in Bahrain with the Navy and am planning on proposing to my girlfriend a few months after I get home (need to have the ring made). She likes a modern-looking ring and is particularly enamored with a platinum half-bezel solitaire setting (I don’t have the link to the site; will get it to you later).

I’ve heard stories of guys who have had diamonds they bought here appraised for significantly more than they paid for them. However, I only have a few more days here and don’t want to pull the trigger too fast just to have a diamond – I just want a beautiful stone that I’ll be glad I bought and that she will love.

I’d like to keep my budget around $6-8k for the stone and ring; more if I have to. My girlfriend hasn’t set any requirements for size or anything, which is nice, but I’m starting my search around 0.90ct and going up to 1.5ct or so. Based on the setting, a round brilliant makes the most sense to me, though a princess cut would be fine (though I’m nervous about there not being an organization that will classify princess cuts).

I’m torn right now because I did find an absolutely beautiful stone last night – a 0.9ct round brilliant, SI1 D GIA certified stone that was absolutely radiant compared to the other stones I saw. The dealer quoted me $3,600 or so for the stone alone, and I feel like I’m paying a lot for the perfect color (which will be relatively unnoticeable once the stone is set) that I could get back in a little more size for the same money.

Any guidance you could provide would be wonderful – thanks in advance.

Q: I was looking at your site and I think it has a lot of great information, me and my boyfriend are currently shopping for an engagement ring…

I found a setting that I really like, it’s fairly simple, platinum with a tapered baggette and round stone on each side, and am thinking of a princess cut diamond for the center stone.

I have been doing a lot of research on diamonds, and while I really love the setting from the jeweler ( the shane co) I’m not sure their loose diamonds are the best quality for the money…

In reading through your advice on color, cut and clarity I’m now more confused on the parameters to search for… Orginally we were searching for a 1 carat diamond minimum size with a color of F or better and a clarity of VS1 or better… After reading your advice I’m not sure if we need to find a princess of that high of quality and may be able to find a bigger diamond for the same price…

Our budget is about $5,000 for the loose diamond, the setting is another $1,200.

Obviously the bigger the better however I’ve had bad experiences with diamonds in the past, I’m very nervous about the stone appearing yellowish or cloudy and of it having inclusions that are visible…

I am willing to have a different cut, such as a radiant or cushion if the price/quality is better or if you think, based on my description, another shape would look better on our setting, I can send you a photo if you like…

As for the loose diamond search I’ve looked at the Shane co, Blue Nile and Jared, but I am nervous about buying a diamond without looking at it first…

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Q: Your website has provided me with some valuable advice, I really knew nothing before visiting it. I’m looking to purchase a ring, I’m UK based and have a £1,500 ring budget.

I’ve seen this diamond:

http://www.bluenile.co.uk/build-your-own-diamond-ring forceStep=DIAMONDS_STEP&track=tab#diamonds_forceStep=DIAMONDS_STEP|builder=BYOR|pid=LD01195010

which seems to be a good balance of price/carat/cut/colour/clarity. What do you think?

Many thanks

Q: Hi, I am looking to find the best diamond in my price range (isn’t everyone? haha). I came across this website, which has been of great benefit to me, and was really hoping you could help me, as you have others. I have done some research and have found 4 I think are pretty good deals. I was hoping you could take a look and let me know what you think and maybe even suggest a better deal.

Here are the 4 diamonds I currently have on my list:

I am looking for a cushion shape in the $3000 to $4000 range. I am going to be putting it in a platinum ring with sidestones (at the bottom are a few rings i like). I would like at least 1 carat, with a color no less than J, and prefer the cushion l/w ratio to be close to 1. I like the square look better than the rectangle look.

Here are the rings I am looking at getting with the stone:

I really appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.
