Q: Ira,

Your site is excellent!! Plan on doing an online diamond purchase (Blue Nile or James Allen). Not huge $$$, but I am totally obsessed with finding some value out there! And its seems your the guy. So here’s an easy one:

Total budget 9k (USD) for the stone (keeps me around 10k all in)

Parameters: Round. Thats it.

After reading every article you’ve written, I’m cutting you loose. Find me a stone summon all your creative powers and make my future wife smile!

As per your writings, color can be low, clarity is hit or miss, carats don’t tell the whole tale. So I don’t want to curtail you. Take some chances, I implore you. Looking for a hidden gem that might escape a less discerning eye. I’m not a stickler for ”grades” and I don’t care what its assessed value is,and don’t mind a singular large flaw that makes an otherwise unaffordable diamond within reach. Just hoping to find a stone that has ”bang for the buck”

(and if you have anything offline available I’d pay the 10% gladly if you made it an offer I can’t refuse, though I understand my purchase price isn’t heavy enough to have you sorting through the whole of Israel)

Thanks for in advance for anything you can do,

A: Thanks for the kind words! If I get any more emails like yours its going to inflate my ego too much

I took a look for you, and this stone stood out:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1310583.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

It’s got an excellent cut. It’s got medium blue fluorescence which should temper the J color just enough so it looks completely white. The only issue I have is that the picture is terrible, so I can’t say for certain if the stone is eye clean. In all likelihood it is, but I can’t guarantee it. To get that guarantee, you should contact JA and have them take a look at it.

What do you think?

Q: I contacted JA. we’ll see how they respond. But your selection is right up my alley. Thanks and I’ll be sure to follow up.

A: Sounds great. I look forward to hearing from you!

Q: They said it was eye clean, I’m gonna give it a shot. Thanks for your help. I’ll follow up upon delivery.

A: Great! I look forward to your response.

Q: Ira,

Just received the diamond you suggested….

I am utterly satisfied. First off, the diamond pops nicely. In the daylight the thing just makes noise. So it was very well cut, and the light loved it. Secondly, the 1.7 was bigger than I initially thought given my budget.

Which leads me to my Aha! moment when buying round diamonds, thanks to you. The color of a round diamond MUST be sacrificed by value-hunters. When mixed with medium fluorescence, my J/SI1 diamond, to my eye, looks like ice. I mean – its perfect. Its got a white/black/ice blue/ sparkle thing going on that is just mesmerizing. I just took it to a jewelry store to compare it to some F’s and G’s side by side, and really you couldn’t realistically say either one had any yellow in it at all. I know I am biased, but I would strongly recommend not paying up for color in a round. Take a leap of faith and slide down the color scale and up the size scale.

The stone I got cost 8.5K and has the look of a much more $$$$ diamond. She’s gonna be happy with it. Good work my man…

A: That’s great to hear! Congratulations!

If what you’re looking to accomplish with your purchase of an engagement ring is uniqueness, then sometimes you need to think outside the box. There are definitely a fixed number of style groups when it comes to engagement rings. You have tapered baguette side stones, pave halo, pave on the shank, solitaire, etc. But aside from these easily categorized style groups, you occasionally have styles that are so unique they defy classification. Today’s ring is once such design.

Today’s selection features a double shank that is slightly split just before it reaches the basket at the top of the ring. Surrounding the basket is a artfully woven strip of gold studded with ideal cut pave stones. This creates a fiery pave style look but with the added beauty of this uniquely artistic design.

Q: Hi- I have discovered your site and am intrigued. I’m hoping to buy an engagement ring within the next month, quicker if possible. My budget is between 10K and 12K for the ring and the band. I was hoping to get a center diamond of approximately 1.5 carets for this price. Do you think this is possible? Do you have any specific diamonds you recommend? I think I have a band picked out and have used your diamond locator, but it’s tough to find the perfect one. Also, I thought I saw something about getting a discount through James Allen if I ordered through your site, how does that work? Let me know what you think. Not sure how this works, but am free anytime to talk on the phone or by email if you have any free time. Thanks

A: Hi. I just tried calling you, but as the voicemail answered, I noticed that you asked me to call only after 6pm. I won’t be able to because in Israel where I live, we’re (now for the time being until we change our clocks too) 6 hours ahead of you.

First of all, thanks for writing! And thanks for the kind words about the site.

I do think you can get what you’re looking for with your budget, but it depends on a few things.

1) What shape are you looking for?

2) How intricate of a setting and wedding band are you looking to get? Could you send me a link to a style you like?

3) Yes, if you use the TADJ10 coupon code, you will get 10% off the setting (not the diamond) and wedding band.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Q: Hi Ira- I didn’t know you were in Israel, but now I understand there is a time difference.

As for the shape, she’s pretty insistent on a round diamond with a platinum band.

For the band, I really like this one.

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-261.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Not to ‘metal-ly’ and I think the smaller diamonds on the sides make the center diamond look bigger. I also like others that have 6 or 8 side stones.

Right now, finding the perfect center diamond is really the key.

I’ll also be available by phone in 30 minutes if you are still around.

A: Thanks for the quick reply. Just one thing – you said your budget of 10-12 included the wedding band. How plain/ornate of a band do you plan on buying? I’m trying to narrow down what my exact budget for the diamond is.

Q: I’m pretty set on this setting, which is $1640 before discount:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-261.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

For the band, I was thinking something that would be about the same price. Maybe something like this one.

http://www.jamesallen.com/wedding-and-anniversary/womens-wedding-rings/ring/item_63-263.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

A: Ok, so I’m figuring about a 9300 budget max for the center stone. Lets get started!

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1254384.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – AGS triple zero. Only concern here is the stone has clouds. This can either mean that it’s basically clean and will have no visual affects, or it can mean it looks like frozen spit. It’s hard to tell based on the picture, so I’d recommend having JA pull the stone to give you their opinion. If it’s good, the stone is a great value.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1289817.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – GIA triple zero. It’s an awful picture with terrible lighting. But the stone looks definitely clean to the naked eye.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1288634.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – GIA excellent cut. Another awful picture which distorts the stone’s color, but the stone looks clean to the naked eye.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1278164.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – GIA Excellent cut. Also eye clean.

Have a look at these suggestions and let me know what you think!

Q: The first diamond is no longer available. I liked the other three but have the same 2 concerns with each: 1) The clarity is SI2. I understand that may not mean anything to the naked eye but just want to make sure. On the 3 diamonds you recommend, can you tell if the inclusions are near the perimeter? Also, can you tell if the inclusions are translucent? 2) The girdle size is thick for these, I’d been previously advised to look for a thin or medium girdle. Does this matter?

A: Have a look at my article about diamond clarity here:

http://www.truthaboutdiamonds.com/truth-about/diamond-clarity/

It looks like the last stone in my list was sold already as well. As far as the remaining two stones in the middle are concerned – yes, both diamonds’ inclusions are translucent and near the perimeter.

Slightly thick and thick girdles are not a problem at all. I also don’t really mind Very THick girdles. I usually just tell people to stay away from Extremely Thick girdles.

Q: Thanks so much for your help, Ira. I took a deep breath and bought the second diamond on your list (the 1.7 carat stone).

Here goes. Thanks again.

A: Congrats! PLEASE let me know what you think when it arrives!

……….

Hey. I know it’s been a while. I just wanted to follow up with you to see how you liked the ring. I’d love to hear!

Q: Hi Ira- Got the ring last Thursday and love it. It appraised over 15K and I paid 10K for it, so I am happy.

Thanks so much for your help.

A: Hey! What great news!! I really appreciate you getting back to me and letting me know. I’m very happy you’re pleased with the ring. I was wondering if you could do me a small favor if you have the time. Do you think you might be able to leave me feedback on ivouch?

Q: Hi Ira, I’ve been reading your website with interest since finding it a couple of weeks ago, the information is revealing and excellent, I am sure there must be a few ruffled feathers within the diamond establishment! I would appreciate your advice in assisting me with finding a suitable engagement ring for my girlfriend. I intend to propose at Christmas so I have time to find the right stone over the next couple of weeks. I would like at least a 1 carat stone which is of good quality i.e. Ideal cut so that all the light possible is reflected and with no inclusions visible to the naked eye. My budget, including setting, is about £5000 to 5500 GBP – (unfortunately this sum must also include tax and duty for the UK)

A: Thanks for writing and thanks for the kind words about my site!

According to James Allens currency converter (which also takes into account taxes), your budget is about 7500 USD max including the ring. You didn’t tell me which ring you’re thinking about, so I’m going to assume you’ll be spending between 500-1000 USD. If it’s different, please let me know.

For your needs, I decided to limit my search to GIA Excellent or AGS Ideal cut grades grades (highest mark for each lab). Also, I want to stick to I colors, maybe H. This will give you the best value. THe most expensive color upgrade is from H to G, and there’s no real reason for it. As far as clarity goes, I’d like to find you an eye-clean SI2. This will also get you the best value.

HEre’s what I came up with:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI2-Premium-Cut-Round-Diamond-1265607.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – Great stone. GIA triple Excellent. SI2 is all on the side. Can be covered by prong on setting.
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1259915.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – SI2 very spready. 100% eye clean.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1267146.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – Triple excellent. 100% eye clean.

If you go ahead an buy from James Allen, don’t forget to use the coupon they gave for readers of my site – TADJ10 – it gives 10% off the setting.

Let me know what you think of these picks. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Q: Thanks for the quick response!

I think the 3rd of the diamonds you’ve suggested is definitely closing in on what I am looking for – it does indeed look very clean, even under the virtual loupe – its weird how I’d been looking at some VVS2 diamonds and they looked worse (i.e. with noticeable black inclusions) to a consumer like me than the ones you have suggested. I am happy as long as its 100% eye clean, if I can notice the inclusions then that will bother me!

I like this kind of band http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/ring/item_412-3964.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – I note that the diamonds in this band are F-G, do you think its worth getting an H colour grade for the main stone to ensure there is no noticeable colour difference?

A: Its not a problem. H is close enough that you won’t notice any difference in color.

JA checks every ring for quality issues before it leaves their office. They don’t want to sell you something you’ll end up returning anyway since returns cost them a lot of money. If it doesn’t match, they won’t let you buy that ring.

Q: Sorry just to clarify on the colour rating – the stones you originally suggested where all ‘I’ – given the setting I am looking at, should I go for an ‘H’? If so, I’m struggling to find any I colour stones that look as clean as the ones you suggested, most have noticeable inclusions, even without the virtual loupe

A: I’m sorry, I don’t know where my head was! I still think an I color will be OK with that setting. Just to be sure, though, you should call JA’s customer service when they open in a few hours and ask them their opinion. They deal with these issues all day every day so they’ll be able to give you a more informed answer. My professional experience is really focused more on loose diamonds.

Q: OK, will do Ira. They still have the diamond you recommended in stock, so fingers crossed its OK.

A: Great. Let me know what they say!

……

Did you ever get in touch with JA? What did they say?

Q: Yes I did, I was going to drop you a line later on once everything had been processed. Their advice was not to worry at all, they said they had never had such a combination returned and almost never receive any comments about a noticeable colour difference. I got them to inspect the diamond and confirm it is clean

A: Great! So you made the purchase?

Q: Sorry, I pressed send by accident half way through writing that, so you have it in two parts!

They inspected the diamond you suggested and confirmed it was eye clean so I went ahead with the purchase as the stone seemed such a good choice. Many thanks for you help, I never would have achieved such good value by myself! Now all I need to do is keep it s secret til Christmas!

A: My great pleasure! Do you use facebook? Would you mind becoming a fan of the new page I set up for the website?

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Truth-About-Diamonds/111878377578

Please stay in touch and let me know how the ring looks when you get it!

Q: Just realised I hadn’t responded to this!

Yes I do use facebook, I will become a fan once I have popped the question to my girlfriend – I don’t want to add you yet as she might see and so ruin the surprise.

A: Just wanted to follow up with you. Did you get the ring? How did it look? Were you happy with the diamond?

Best Wishes for a Happy New Year,

Q: Happy New Year! I hope you had a great festive season.

Yes I did get the ring and more importantly, my girlfriend is now my fiance – but to answer your questions we both love the ring and the diamond is beautiful. Its size has served to impress a number of times and it has so much fire it is really eye catching. Thanks again for your help in selecting the diamond!

All the best for the New Year,

A: That’s fantastic news!

I’ve very happy I was able to help you out. I was wondering if you could do me a small favor if you have the time. Do you think you might be able to leave me feedback on ivouch? The website is still quite new – I only launched seriously in the summer. These testimonials really help me build credibility. You can access it directly here with this link:

Q: Many thanks for your best wishes Ira!

I’ve just submitted my review.

Q: I am shopping around for a 1.5 carat Princess cut diamond, solitaire ring. My girlfriend was roped in by salesmen at Zales and loves the Celebration diamond they sell. I do not have the budget for a $13,000 ring, but would like to find something with an excellent cut to maximize brilliance. My budget max is $9500 but I am looking for a good deal. I have looked through diamonds at James Allen and Blue Nile. I was curious what you could find for me. Thanks in advance for your help.

A: Hey M. It was a pleasure speaking with you earlier. Here’s what I found for you:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1256386.asp - I VS2 1.74 Great numbers. Clean.
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1269711.asp- H SI1 1.73 Even better numbers. SI1 is small, but dead center. Most likely eye-clean. But for this one, I’d be more comfortable if you called James Allen’s customer service and asked them to check it face to face. (JA only works with vendors in walking distance to their NY office, so they have physical access to all the stones they sell – unlike Blue Nile)
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1249092.asp- H VS2 1.70. Great make. VS2 is dead center and black. Again, most likely eye clean, but definitely worth a face-to-face check if you want to pursue further.
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1249538.asp- G SI2. Interesting option. Very nice SI2. It’s concentrated at the top in the pic in the middle.
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1269249.asp – I VS1 – Ever so slightly off-square. And table is a little large, but that’s just at asthetic issue and not a performance one.
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1224711.asp – I VS2 1.74. Great all around.
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VVS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1255226.asp – IVVS2. Great make. I dont’ necessarily recommend buying such a high clarity since a VS2 will be just as clean to your naked eye. But it is cool how you can get such a high clarity stone for such a great price with still such a great make.

That’s more than I usually send, but there really were quite a bit of options. Again, you can go down to an I color with confidence that it’s still going to look great. Have a look at these and let me know your thoughts.

Best Regards,
Ira

PS – I was at the Orange Bowl on Jan 1st 1988 when Miami wooped you guys! I grew up in Miami as a huge ‘canes fan.

Q: I really appreciate your help. I am debating between the first one and the second to last one. Both 1.74, VS2, I but about $600 difference. The more expensive one has a better picture but I don’t want to base my decision on that. It also has a smaller table, so I am trying to decide what I like better.

I will probably order it this week. Again I appreciate your input, it helped a lot. I will make sure to go through your site to give you credit.

Also, we are Oklahoma State graduates, so we are a little happy when OU gets beat. Haha.

A: Thanks a lot! Please let me know if you need any more help.

Miami fans will always appreciate OSU for sending us Jimmy Johnson

James Allen also has a great selection of engagement rings to choose from to match with this diamond. If you want something that’s delicate and simple, yet still offers some of the extra sparkle that side stones offer, then I suggest going with James Allen’s 18k White Gold 0.30ctw Common Prong Diamond Engagement Ring. The very narrow 1.9mm shank will really make the size of this center stone show strongly, and the ideal cut side stones will add a ton of pop and fire behind the center stone.

This diamond is lucky enough to have almost all of the I1 spread around the girdle (edge) of the diamond. You can strategically place the setting’s prongs to cover much of the cloud formations that you see around the edges. Even without the prong-cover, however, this diamond will be clean to the naked eye. When your eye scans a diamond, rarely does it focus on the outer edge.

James Allen also has a great selection of engagement rings to choose from to match with this diamond. As with our last daily diamond selection, if you really want to make this large diamond look huge on your fiance’s finger, then pair it with an engagement ring that is as simple and delicate as possible. Making sure the shank width is quite narrow (as close to 2mm as possible) will ensure you’ll get this look successfully. Setting this large 2 carat Round diamond on top of a ring such as James Allen’s 18k White Gold 2.2mm Wire Basket Solitaire Ring will really make it stand out.

I’m sure by now you have noticed the large inclusion at about 8 o’clock in the picture of this stone. I can tell you from experience that if you place a prong over the outer edge of this inclusion, it will make it much less noticeable. Again, like a few of the other I1 selections, this stone might not technically be totally eye-clean at 12 inches, but it will definitely be clean at a casual glance. You’ll need to really study the stone to find that inclusion at 8 o’clock unless you already know where it is.
