Q: I’m looking for a princess cut diamond around 1.25 ct (+- .25 ct) set into a channeled band with diamonds only going halfway down on either side. Have made my mind up on clarity, color, etc. My budget is 8000. I want a combination of quality and size. I live near Miami’s diamond district and was told to look there for a good deal. I plan to go to a Jared’s or local store first so I can just look at a variety of diamonds to get an idea of what to look for. Is all this a good idea or am I still more likely to get the best deal online? Anything to look out for? Your site was highly recommended by a friend. Thanks.

Q: Dear Ira, I was wondering if you could give me your thoughts on the following Asscher Cut Diamonds from Bluenile:

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?filter_id=0&track=head#diamonds_pid=LD01788438

http://www.bluenile.com/asscher-cut-diamond-1-carat-very-good-cut-f-color-si2-clarity_LD00439308

I am looking for the best for less than $8,000 US. I would like a color grade of D-G I would like the best clarity possible and am very open to SI2 as long as it is eye clean and the inclusions are not too bad. Simply put, I would like the biggest bang for my buck. Please advise me. This has been very stressful for me and I have been to many brick & mortar jewelers in Southern California (where I am from) that have trying to persuade me to buy their diamonds. Thanks in advance!! Budget Anything else you might feel is relevant

A: Thanks for writing. Buying a diamond can most definitely be a very stressful experience. Especially going door to door in B&M jewelry stores and getting haggled by annoying salespeople whom you never know if you can trust or not.

I would be very hesitant to recommend buying an SI from BN. The reason is simply that the large majority of SI1 and especially SI2 Asscher and Emerald cuts are NOT eye clean.

Take a look at the pic on this stone, and it’s a VS2!!

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Asscher-Diamond-1295751.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

So you see, you need to be REALLY careful with Emerald Cuts and Asscher Cuts because they really show off their inclusions strongly.

I really like this stone, but it’s an (which, btw, I think is totally fine to get in an ):

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Asscher-Diamond-1304654.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – it’s 100% eye clean and a really really nice cut.

Here’s another one, but a bit on the expensive side:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Asscher-Diamond-1294903.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

One more, a G color. Well under your budget, and a little smaller than you were hoping to get, but has a favorable depth that makes it look bigger than it is:

Have a look at these and let me know what you think!

Q: I have been monitoring your site for a while now and have found it very informative. I do not know the first thing when it comes to diamonds except what I have read on your site. I am looking for a center stone, princess cut diamond for around $8000. I would like it to be from a 1.25ct to a 1.50ct for that price. I have a band already picked out. below is the attached link http://www.hydeparkjewelers.com/bridal-engagement-rings/engagement-ring-collection/tacori-rings.aspx I know it is not a great picture but it is the best one I can find online. The jeweler that is selling this states that the diamonds in the channel are of G color and . I have been looking into a center stone from jamesallen.com because they seem to have more resonable prices than the place I am going to buy the setting from. If at all possible I would like the diamond to be of G color and . but, I am not sure if I should get the same color and clarity for the center stone. Let me know what you think. Thanks!!!

You might mistakenly believe that solitaire style engagement rings – those rings without any diamonds on the ring other than the main center stone – are fairly straightforward and don’t vary much in style.  But nothing could be further from the truth!

Within the solitaire category, there are many variations of looks.  Some bands are wider, some are more narrow.  Some are higher up (cathedral), some strive to be as flush with the finger as possible.  Some are ornate with filigree, some are plain and polished.

Today’s setting recommendation is a great example of how unique you can go with a solitaire setting.  Today’s ring, the 18k White Gold Wide Contour Solitaire Ring Setting from James Allen, features a double contoured band that gives a sleek and unique look.

This ring, in either white gold or platinum would match wonderfully with today’s diamond.

James Allen also has a large variety of engagement rings to choose from to pair with today’s daily diamond selection.  Many people strive to find an that’s different from the pack out there.  So many people these days are going with very thin bands studded with pave diamonds, so why not go in the opposite direction and go with a wider band channel set with larger side diamonds.  James Allen’s 18k White Gold Round Raised Pave Diamond Engagement Ring is a great option if you’re looking for a wider band but still want a real fiery statement piece.

As always with our Daily Diamond selections, today’s stone is completely clean to the naked eye.  The small black inclusion that you see in the center of the stone will not be visible to the naked eye – it is too small.

Q: Hello, I have been dating my girlfriend for 8 and a half years ever since the beginning of high school, and now that we are both graduated and working, it’s time to propose. On top of that, we are taking a trip to europe in the first week of February, and I would love to have a ring to propose with in Paris!

I think I have decided to buy online. The lack of tax on most of the online retailers is a big price advantage over local jewelers, and I would love to spend that extra cash on a better diamond. I am looking to spend about 8000 dollars or less on a round diamond, with an absolute max around 8500.

I am a scientist, so I love reading about the specs of a diamond, but I am still unsure how important each is. After all the reading, I think I would like something with , G color, and ideal cut or better, but from reading your wonderful website it seems I could get away with less in the color and clarity categories. I looked at James Allen’s Diamond Color Tool, and the jump from G to seemed more noticeable than the other jumps.

After looking at so many rings, I really like the Nouveau Diamond Ring in Platinum at BlueNile.com. Since I like this setting the most, it feels like I am limited only to the diamond selection of Blue Nile. What do you think? It doesn’t seem possible to order just the setting from Blue Nile. If Blue Nile’s diamond selection isn’t good, do you know of any close alternatives where I might get a similar setting and a better deal on a diamond?  What’s your opinion of Blue Nile’s diamond collection? They have a 1.20 carat, VS1, G color, with strong blue flourescence for $7795. Is this a good deal?

I know your website says that the strong blue will make the G color actually look worse. Is that why this diamond is much lower priced than other ? I also like the color blue so I keep wondering if a strong blue flourescence is really a bad thing? I think I’d like to maximize the size of the diamond within my price range, but I also don’t want to sacrifice on the color or clarity too much.

Yesterday Blue Nile also had a 1.38 carat, VS2, for just 50 dollars more than the 1.20 I mentioned above. Which one do you think is the better deal? Sadly, the 1.38 seems to have sold today so that is no longer an option. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated! I am in somewhat of a rush since I leave for Europe on Feb 27th. Is this cutting it too close? I have really enjoyed reading your website, and I will recommend your site to anyone looking at diamonds in the future.

Q: Hi Ira, I’ve been reading your website with interest since finding it a couple of weeks ago, the information is revealing and excellent, I am sure there must be a few ruffled feathers within the diamond establishment! I would appreciate your advice in assisting me with finding a suitable for my girlfriend. I intend to propose at Christmas so I have time to find the right stone over the next couple of weeks. I would like at least a 1 carat stone which is of good quality i.e. Ideal cut so that all the light possible is reflected and with no inclusions visible to the naked eye. My budget, including setting, is about £5000 to 5500 GBP – (unfortunately this sum must also include tax and duty for the )
