Q: Hello Ira, First, thank you for your site. It’s proven quite helpful already.

My question concerns potential vendors. I live in Los Angeles where we have a wholesale jewelry district downtown. An acquaintance, who actually picked out her own , swears that I would be a fool to not use one of these local vendors. Is she right? (And if so, would you happen to have anyone here that you recommend?)

I love to buy online but I’m still not entirely convinced that buying a diamond online is the wisest option. Especially with the local options reportedly being so great. Ultimately, of course, I just want the best deal. Perhaps better deals will, in fact, be found online? I intend to go in soon to see for myself and have some basis for comparison, but I’d love to know what to expect. Any insight here would be very welcome. And I thank you in advance.

Best – D

PS – I anticipate going for a round cut, 1.25 or so Carat, and trying to get the cleanest, clearest one I can for *hopefully* under $8k. But that’s just an initial direction. I definitely do not intend to spend more than ten grand, and would be thrilled to find something great that’s closer to five! Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Q: Hello, First – I think your site is great. Very good information and non of the marketing ploys. Keep up the good work. On to the situation. My girlfriend is leaning towards a yellow diamond as the primary stone surrounded by white diamonds, similar to an antique style. She has mentioned that “fancy” diamonds are not necessary but still would like some color – possibly in the X,Y,Z category. So I have two questions / dilemmas. Fist, are there any downsides at doing a two tone setup such as this? I have not seen many two tone engagement rings out there and am partially worried that it may come back to haunt us. I know this is some what a personal opinion but I value your expertise. Second, if going in that direction I have not found many retailers that carry non-fancy colored stones. Do you have any recommendations on where / who to look for these types of stones.

Q: I am looking for an and happened to come across your site. Here is what I’m looking for:

* Is your goal cheapest price for given parameters, or best diamond for fixed budget:

Well, I’m looking for the best diamond that I need without overpaying for things that are not needed.

* Shape:

Round

* Desired Color Range:

F, G, H

* Desired Clarity:

VS1, VVS2

* Budget:

$5000

* Anything else you might feel is relevant:

The above parameters are flexible.

After reading your homepage, it seems like a VS2 will be acceptable if the blemish is not visible. Basically, I’m somewhat fortunate as my girlfriend does not really want a big ring as she doesn’t want it to look too gaudy. She saw a friends ring which was 1.25 carats and thought it looked nice, BUT she said she could never wear a ring like that. (note, it wasn’t round so I don’t know if that made it look bigger than the carat weight) She has relatively small, petite fingers. At a store, she saw 0.5 and 0.75 carats and she said that would be enough (but she didn’t try it on, just looking through the case). However, financially, I can afford a bit more than that. So I’m thinking of about a 0.9 carat ring. The ‘guy’ side of me wants to go even bigger since I can afford it. I don’t want to regret buying a too small ring when I could afford a larger one. Yet, I want to respect her wishes. Anyway, I’m looking for any advice or maybe the best value diamond at around 0.9 carats or something else if you recommend a bigger ring.

One of the most common styles these days is the pave “halo” style e-ring.  The typical halo setting features a pave studded frame that hugs the contour of the center stone.  This look is great for two reasons.

Firstly, it instantly adds about 3 millimeters to the diameter of the diamond.  This might not sound like a lot, but consider that a 1 carat round diamond is about 6.3-6.5mm across and a 3 carat round diamond is about 9mm across.  That’s quite an upgrade in size!

Secondly, the pave halo look adds a beautiful ring of sparkle filled “bling” around the center stone.  It’s like shinning a spotlight on your center stone.

has a number of halo styles for different diamond shapes (obviously, because the halo fits the contour of the diamond, each setting is unique to a different shape of diamond).   The one I selected today is just one of several that has available for round diamonds.  The style today is the following: 18k White Gold Pave ME29 by Danhov Designer Eternity Engagement Ring.

Hi Ira, I love the site. Very helpful – you’ve already saved me money by showing I can still get a great diamond by relaxing some of my initial standards. I feel I’ve taken your advice on what to look for, but I was thinking maybe you could give me your thoughts on a few that I’ve found:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1277723.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1268618.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1276071.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Are any of these appear better or worse than the others? The diamond will be going in a white gold setting. I look forward to hearing from you.

Q: Ira- I feel so lucky to have come across your website, the wealth of information here is almost unbelievable. Thank you so much for providing it all. My question is relatively simple – in your experience and opinion, is it better to purchase online or from a local jeweler? I think there are some price advantages to purchasing online but you get to see the diamond in person when speaking to a jeweler. Additionally, when purchasing online, you don’t need to worry about jewelers pushing sub-par rings on you for higher prices. But, you also lose the expertise and familiarity with the diamond that so often comes with in-person jewelers. What are your thoughts on this? As for what I’m looking for: At least a very good cushion cut, ratio not greater than a 1.1 (more square-ish). High color grade (D or an E) with Clarity in the VS1 to SI1 range. Size of the ring around 1 – 1.1 carats. And, of course, I’m trying to do this for around 5,000 (mission impossible). I also wanted to add I’ve found your discussion on the clarity differences particularly enlightening; specifically that you need to see the stone to determine where and how noticeable a flaw is. This seems to be another advantage for shopping with an in-person jeweler. Thanks for your time.

also has a large variety of engagement rings to choose from to pair with today’s daily diamond selection.  A truly elegant style that’s somewhat off the beaten track of popular styles is the look of a squarish center stone flanked by two triangular shapped trillion diamonds.  One great example of this popular style is ’s 18kt White Gold 3-Stone, Pave Set Diamond Engagement Ring.  Don’t let the “3-Stone” name fool you – this is no anniversary ring style – this is an style through and through.

As with all of our Daily Diamond selections, today’s stone is completely clean to the naked eye.  That small faint black inclusion you see in the center of the stone will not be visible to the naked eye.  This stone is a truly great value for the money.

Q: Hi, I’m looking for the best diamond I can get for my budget. I’m hoping I can spend $5,000 or less on an but I am also willing to step it up to $6,000 if it is an absolute killer deal. What I’m looking for: Shape – Round diamond Ring – Platinum/White Gold Weight – 1 to 1.5 carat Color – H or higher but after reading your color article, I guess I can go lower considering the ring color and shape of diamond. Clarity – No preference as long as the flaws cannot be seen through the naked eye. Like I mention above, I would like to spend $5,000 or less but am willing to step it up to $6,000 if its a killer deal. Let me know if there is any additional information you would like to help me out in choosing a diamond.
