I’m looking for a diamond, round cut, that will be set in a platinum solitaire setting. My budget for the stone is up to about $3.5k – $4k, and I’m pretty much looking to get the best stone in that budget. So far, I’ve been looking at stones in the G-I color range, VS2/SI1/SI2 and Ideal cuts.

I was looking at some stones on James Allen, and I found the stones below, and was wondering if you could offer some guidance on how you feel they would look set, or if you could offer any better alternatives.

A: You know, for the life of me, I can’t understand why that I SI2 only received a “Very Good” cut grade. I think there might have been some kind of mistake, or it missed the “Excellent” grade because of some kind of technicality. I actually think that this is your best bet. Seems to me like a bargain since it’s priced as a VG, but it’s really an EX.

As for making sure the tracking works, that’s very kind! Just make sure you order from the same computer that you’ve been clicking on my links with and it should all be automatic. Q: I like the .91 ct. but do you think I should go smaller with better color say F or G in color. Not sure how J colored diamond would look compared to a F or G. A: A J color round ideal cut diamond set in a solitaire setting will definitely look white to your eye. The yellow you see in the pics is an artifact of the photography.

A: A K color will be fine as long as you’re comfortable with the fact that the stone will show some warmth – that it won’t be a bright icy white.

I decided to take you up on your offer of assistance in selecting a diamond. I am budgeting between $3,000 – $3,500 for a round cut diamond. I want something in the neighborhood of .8 – .9 carats that looks amazing to the naked eye. Not having a microscope in the house – I am not too concerned with any well hidden flaws. Just to get a better sense of what we are talking about – I visited a prominent local jeweler this afternoon. There prices were certainly more expensive and when I showed the salesperson the certificate of the first diamond you recommended there was a definite sense that I had committed a very unpleasant act. Do you think there is ever a reason to buy from a brick and mortar store or are they just unable to compete on price for what is essentially the exact same product?

From everything I saw today – your suggestions are right on the mark. I could barely tell the difference in color and clarity ratings and the only obvious difference I could tell were in the size. I am almost certainly going to buy online and hopefully I can get the funds together before your recommendations are already sold.

A: There still are some specific instances where buying B&M makes sense. Basically, there are certain times when seeing the diamond is an absolute must, and in those circumstances, B&M is a good idea – even though it’ll be more expensive. THis is primarily for the soft-sided fancy shapes which are awfully ugly 90% of the time.

To give some background, I am a Marine stationed in California. I recently returned from Afghanistan and I am ready to propose to my girl friend. It just so happens that before I can propose I need to buy a diamond ring. I am also unsure if I can match the solitaire to the setting’s prongs so a jeweler can set the solitaire in the ring. Also, approximately how much would it cost to have a local jeweler set the diamond in the ring?

After looking over the choices, I really liked the round cut. Seeing as how the inclusions are close to the side, how hard would it be if later (after I make my millions) I had a jeweler remove the imperfections and replace them with filler? What would the cost of something like that amount to? Is that a good option for a diamond like this. Also, how effective is the drilling/removal process?

A: That stone doesn’t really lend itself to clarity enhancement because the inclusion is spread out and isn’t one solid mass.

I actually think for a round you might be better off dropping slightly below a carat and sticking with an SI2. Something like this:

What is the real difference between #2 and #3? To my eye #2 looks like a nicer stone but I think that is because the lighting in the pic is better. It is also a bit higher in carat but is $100 less than #3.

A: It’s a great classic setting. If that’s the ring, then I think you should go for stone #2. It’s larger, and it has a nicer cut. Since the setting is a solitaire, you don’t have to worry about any color matching issues. It’ll look fantastic in that setting.

You’ll simply get the most diamond for your money with this one. The inclusion won’t be visible to the naked eye and it’s got an excellent cut. The I color will still look totally white to your eye.

A: I’m very happy to help. My first comment, though, is that a J color cushion cut might not be a good match with a platinum setting. Cushions show color rather strongly, so a J color will start to have a noticeable tint. I would suggest you stick to H or I colors (even at the expense of getting a larger stone). Once I get your confirmation that this is OK, I’ll send you some suggestions.

Q: This is the kind of information I was looking for, and is exactly why I asked for your help. I was unsure if J would be too low of a color with the cushion shape, and also with the diamonds that are in the band of the platinum ring averaging around G-H in color. Did not look any worse than the other VS2’s I was looking at. Appears to be some spots on the edge of the table and a spot near the center of the diamond, not sure how they will look to the naked eye. Seems like a great price for an H color with what seems to be pretty good numbers in all other categories but clarity. Diamond would be eye clean for sure, but it’s got strong blue fluorescence which I’d recommend against unless you have the JA customer service pull the stone to check it for milkiness/cloudiness.  It’s cheap because of the flour.

1195563- I like this diamond, 1.07 carat, I color, VVS1 clarity for a good price. Polish, symmetry, culet, and fluorescence all look. I don’t know really know what is good/bad for the girdle or how much of a difference the girdle makes. Overall I like this diamond.

1184584- This diamond is similar to the one above it but the color and girdle. 1.06 carat, G color, VS1 clarity. Not a big difference in the VVS1 VS1 clarity in my mind, don’t think I would be able to tell the difference between the two looking at them. Girdle on this one is very thin to extremely thick compared to medium on the one above, again I don’t know how much of a difference that makes. This one is a G color and you said that color is important for cushion cut. Do you think the color upgrade is worth the $800 difference in price? I like the idea of getting a G color diamond, based on what you have said, it sounds like it would be better for a cushion cut in a platinum setting. The carat is basically the same. So I guess it boils down to is going up to G from I worth $800, it seems like that is the only thing seperating the two?

1281586- While contemplating going above budget, this one is about the same price as the G color. It is 1.20 carat, I color, and SI1 clarity. As said in previous emails this SI1 appears to be clean to the eye and not much different from most of the VS2’s I was looking at. I don’t know if it is just the male in me that thinks if I am going up in price, why not go for the bigger diamond? The things hurting this diamond appear to be the clarity and the girdle, not sure if girdle is a deal breaker or of no consequence in the long run. I don’t mind going a little above my price range for either the G or this diamond. They both appear to be a good diamond at a good price.

I am also keeping 1197703 on my list in case these 3 are sold when I am ready to pull the trigger. It looks like a good diamond, I just like the other 3 better.

I really appreciate the help, hopefully when I am ready to purchase in the next few weeks these will still be available. If they aren’t available maybe I will be able to pick one out on my own with what I’ve learned and I won’t have to bother you again haha.

A: Very Good synopsis.  If you would ask me, I would say to go for the G.  It’s the one “upgrade” in this list that makes the most sense for a Cushion (between carat, clarity and color).

Anyways, I was planning on spending between $3-3.5K for a diamond, including the setting. I’m thinking $2.5-3K for the diamond and another $500-700 for the setting. My current search has been limited to Blue Nile and James Allen. I’ve been happy with what I’ve seen, pretty much but am worried about the inclusions.

- My parameter is BEST DIAMOND FOR FIXED BUDGET.

- Round shape. It will definitely go on a white gold/platinum setting.

THE FOLLOWING IS ACCORDING TO MY RESEARCH, BUT I AM OPEN TO YOUR EXPERTISE:

- COLOR: H-D

- CLARITY: I just want to make sure nothing is visible to the naked eye. We/she will never take it to a jeweler.

- CARAT: I would ideally like 0.97 or so, but am open to less. I want something that LOOKS big so she can be impressed. Maybe a large table size, without compromising clarity?

Basically, I want the most bang for the buck (doesn’t everyone). I want something that will look big and shiny to the common eye, not too worried about peripheral inclusions (although I would like to avoid them). Considering all of this Ira, how can you help me and what would your fees be?

Regarding that stone you sent me a link to – there’s absolutely no reason to get such a high clarity stone. Furthermore, that stone has strong blue fluorescence which I recommend not buying. See my article about fluorescence if you’re interested in learning why.

I think I like the smallest of the three diamonds you recommended, it also seems to be the cleanest. Reading the article on De Beers (I also read an article in Rolling Stones on diamond trading in Zimbabwe) makes me loathe contributing any money to the coffers of diamond trade big shots. But it is what it is, and my girlfriend is definitely expecting a rock on her finger.

Quick question about your 3rd recommendation: if I decided to instead choose a pave setting, how would I determine if the diamond would look OK? Would your recommendation change?
