Diamond Trivia

The tradition of giving a diamond engagement ring comes from Archduke Maximilian of Austria who gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy in 1477.

A new week, and a new daily diamond series!  It seems like I’ve been receiving an unusually high number of requests for help with Princess Cut Diamonds lately, so I figured this would be a great choice to revisit in my next daily diamond series.  Today, like always, we begin at the top – with a budget of $30,000 – and will work our way down slowly but surely to a budget of $1000.  We kick off our new series today with a beautiful (and large!) 2.81 Carat G Color VS1 Clarity princess cut.

I figured, since today is all about a new daily diamond series, and since we’re starting a whole new shape (princess cuts) after finishing a nice long series of Hearts & Arrows Ideal Cut round diamonds, why not dedicate today through and through to the Princess Cut.

So, with that, I present to you our setting selection of the day: James Allen’s 18k White Gold 3 Stone Channel Set Princess Diamond Engagement Ring.

As you can see in the picture to the right, this setting is all about the beauty of the princess cut.  The setting has 8 pave-like small princess cut diamonds channel set into the shank with two larger side-stone princess cuts creating a classic three-stone setting look with a blinged out shank.

If your girlfriend is in love with princess cuts, this might just be the perfect setting.

After the TADJ10 discount, this setting costs $1431.

James Allen also has a large variety of engagement rings to choose from to pair with today’s daily diamond selection.  A very popular look for engagement rings these days is a relatively thin shank studded with small pave diamonds.  One great example of this popular style is James Allen’s 18k White Gold Pave Set 4 Prong Diamond Engagement Ring.

As always with our Daily Diamond selections, today’s stone is completely clean to the naked eye.  There are many different looks with Cushion Cuts, so its important to look at many sample pictures before you make your decision to figure out what you like.  For example, today’s stone is slightly off- with a L/W ratio of 1.14.  Some people will only want squarish Cushion Cuts.

James Allen also has a large variety of engagement rings to choose from to pair with today’s daily diamond selection.  When looking for a ring to match with a diamond as significant as today’s selection, it’s probably best to choose a band that isn’t too thin and delicate as it will look overpowered by the stone.  A great design that will balance quite nicely with today’s large diamond is James Allen’s 18k White Gold 4mm Rounded Cathedral Solitaire Diamond Ring.  This ring will really bring out the beauty in today’s cushion cut.

As always with our Daily Diamond selections, today’s stone is completely clean to the naked eye.

Q: great website! i know enough to be thoroughly confused…love the shape of the princess and its refracted sizzle, but also think the round is a cleaner, classic cut with better fire and light/brilliance. looked at both in 2C size and didnt notice too much of size difference as long as 4c’ were high range. so, now wondering if i should go with lesser quality round or excellent quality princess, but either case am comitted to 2c size. help! please…..thanks a million.

James Allen also has a great selection of engagement rings to choose from to match with this diamond.  I love the look of a nice big round diamond matched with an with a think band set with small side stones.  I think James Allen’s 18k White Gold 2.0mm Art-Nouveau Pave Set Diamond Engagement Ring is a great option to match with this stone.

If you don’t believe me that this stone is clean to the naked eye, take a look at the picture above. Can you see the inlcusion now? That’s much closer to life-size.

I love these days when I begin a new series of daily diamond recommendations!  Having just completed our series of the best Hearts & Arrows Ideal Cut diamonds for various budgets, today we begin a new series:  the best Cushion Cut available for various budgets. We will begin with a $25000 Budget, and slowly make our way down to a $2000 Budget.

I had a tough choice choosing the opening diamond for this series.  There was an attractive 3.02 carat G SI2 cushion cut available on James Allen, but I was concerned about the SI2 and whether or not it would be .  There were a few other nice looking stones in this price range and size as well.

But when I laid my eyes on today’s final pick, I fell in love immediately. Sometimes, you don’t need to say a lot about a diamond and just let it speak for itself.  Today is one of those days.

Here’s the Stats (or Click Here for a Copy of the GIA Certificate):

Now I know, I don’t recommend buying stones with Medium Blue Fluorescence combined with an F color, but this stone just looked too nice to pass on.  The odds are still that the fluorescence won’t have any visual effects on the diamond, but just to be sure, you should contact James Allen’s customer support to have their gemologists verify this with a face-to-face inspection.

On the heels of yesterday’s Best Princess Cut for $15000, we move on to the best Princess Cut for $14000.  Today’s diamond is actually larger than yesterday’s more expensive diamond.  It happened to be that in the $15,000 price range, the largest nice stone available was the 2.26 ct, since only VS clarity diamonds were available.  At today’s $14,000 price range, we’re lucky enough to find a beautiful SI1 that really brings down the price a lot.
