Q: I am looking for a loose round diamond approximately .60 carats around the $1500.00 Maximum cost that will be set in a white gold setting. From what I have read on your website, cut is the most important and I understand why. I found 2 on James Allen website: item#: 1353295 and item#: 1353294 that look appealing. I would like your opinion and preference on them. Also, feel free to suggest any others.

Q: I am a huge fan of your site both for useful information and a good laugh or two when the diamond searching has got me down. I am looking to get ready make the plunge here in the next month or so and have been looking for the perfect diamond to pop the question with.

That being said, I am a normal person and am on a tight budget. I’m looking for the best round brilliant cut diamond that I can get for $1500. I have been trying to find something in the G-H color range, eye clean up to VS1 clarity, preferably an ideal cut and a size around .70 ct (up to .75 ct max). I don’t have a problem with fluorescence up to medium and am really just trying to get the most impressive stone I can and stay on my budget.

This is the link to the wedding set that I plan on putting it into.

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated. You’re site has already opened my eyes to so many realities that I wouldn’t have gotten from anywhere else (especially not the industry that is trying to keep the wool over my eyes!).

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Q: I just want to say, first of all, that your website is fantastic and very informative. I’ve learned a lot from browsing the articles and Q and A sections. I am hoping you would be able to give me some advice.

I am probably unlike many of your consultations in that I am not purchasing an engagement ring. I am buying a ring for myself as a college graduation present. I have already decided on a setting from James Allen. This setting can be found here:

http://www.jamesallen.com/designer-jewelry/meno-collection-by-danhov/18k-White-Gold-3-Stone-Pave-Framet-Ring.html

Item#: 17205W

I have been admiring this setting for quite a while. However, I need to select a center stone from James Allen. The setting can accommodate anything between .50 and 3.50 carats.

Can you help me find the best, most sparkly stone for around 1,500 (no more than 1,800)? I would like it to be comparable to the other stones in the setting (both in color and clarity)so as to not look strange. I’m willing to sacrifice on the size for better clarity and sparkle/cut. However, I was hoping for around .70 carats. The stone would need to be eye-clean. I would like the center stone to be beautiful on its own, so I could pass it down to my children someday. Please help me find a stone with pizazz! I’ll be so grateful. Thank you for your time. It’s really great what you do here for consumers.

Q: I will soon be purchasing an engagement ring. Soon, as in the next week or so. I’ve been researching and learning for months though, through bluenile.com, jamesallen.com, and your wonderful website. I feel like a bit of an expert now, but thought I would solicit your advice before I make the final decision. I finally have the money, I’m ready to go, I just want to find the perfect stone now.

Here’s the deal. $1500 is my absolute limit, I know it’s not much, but I want to get the best I can for that price. With the basic ring options on BN and JA, that leaves about $1100 tops for the diamond. My girlfriend and I looked at rings together about a year ago, then put the idea on the back burner because of money issues. She doesn’t know I’ve been secretly saving up this $1500 all year long. She’s a bit of a tomboy, doesn’t wear a lot of jewelry, and when we looked together we were looking at small sizes anyways. I was suprised when she was ”grossed out” by the 1 carat sized diamonds and quickly passed them off as too gaudy (lucky me!). She was happy with a .33 carat, but I could really tell she liked the half carat a lot. So, that’s my goal, a .45-.50 carat diamond. But the most important part is the sparkle, the stones we were looking at really sparkled and she couldn’t take her eyes off of it, no matter the size.

So, here I am, diamond shopping online. I’ve found what I’m looking for, in terms of size and what-I-think-will-sparkle expectations. Examples:

BN: .46, Ideal Cut, H, VVS2 for $1030

BN: .47, Ideal Cut, I, VS1 for $978

BN: .46, Ideal Cut, G, VVS2 for $1060

JA: .44, Ideal Cut, G, VVS2 for $1090

JA: .43, Ideal Cut, H, VVS2 for $990

And so on…you can tell from those 5 listings that I’m looking for something that’s Ideal, I color or better, VS1 or better, and as close to .50 carats as I can get. Is this a resonable expectation? Am I going at this wrong? Should I consider a J color or a lower inclusion rating?

Also, I’m no gemologist, so what should I be looking for in JA’s diamond pictures? How can I tell if it’s cloudy or if the inclusions are too large? I want a nice looking diamond, but I want it to have lasting value, too.

Oh last thing: white gold ring. Must be white gold.

Thank you!!

Q: I love your site! I’m looking for a diamond for an engagement ring.

Here are my parameters:

At least 0.5 carat

At most $1,500 for the diamond

Round shaped

I’m going with either white gold or platinum setting

I like the color to be colorless to the eye

Ideal cut

Also I don’t want any visible flaws in the diamond

I’ve gathered a list that I thought looks good, and would like your opinion on these. Or if you can find something better:

Q: Tried shopping in stores for round diamond stud earrings of tcw 0.6 to 0.8, but did not like what I saw for the price. Looking at 3 prong martini setting stud with screw backs in white gold. Typically buy F to G color because other starts to look yellow to me. Would like very good clarity VS1 or better and a well matched pair that are ideal cut. It is important that they sparkle. Budget is around a max of $1500. Let me know if you can help with online options like Blue Nile or James Allen with legitimate return policies if I do not like what they send.
