Q: As many have mentioned, your site is incredibly helpful and informative. I would like to request your assistance in purchasing an engagement ring. I have picked out a setting on jamesallen.com. The link for the setting is:

For the diamond, my maximum budget is $5,400. I would like at least 1 carat, with an Ideal/Excellent cut. Beyond that, I would leave it up to your expert opinion as to what clarity and color would work with this setting and budget.
Thanks your assistance. Read More→
Q: Ira, I stumbled upon your site last week and found it to be a Godsend! You’ve posted so much helpful information here in easy to understand terms. You’ve already helped make my process of searching for an engagement ring much less intimidating.
I’ve read through many of your articles and read some of your blog posts, but I have a question that isn’t quite like any I’ve found answered so far. My girlfriend and I have talked pretty extensively about getting married and the kind of ring she’d like to have. She’s targeted ring styles that are either three stone settings or rings with sidestones because she would like to focus on the stones from a top-down view of the ring when it’s on her finger. In other words, as she keeps telling me, she doesn’t want to see the band, she wants to see the diamonds. I’ve found three very different styles on the JA website: Item#’s 11179W, 17134W, and 1205W. You’ll see each ring has different styles of stones, which makes this evaluation more difficult for me. Naturally, my goal is to get the most impressive ring for the lowest price/best value. I originally had a budget of $5,000, but after shopping I don’t see any way possible to meet that target. I’m willing to pay up to $7,000 at this point.
I know you don’t like giving much advice on settings because it’s mostly a matter of personal opinion. However, I’m very curious about your opinion of these three different styles. Which setting will provide the most impressive ring showcasing the diamonds? Which would be the best value? My gut tells me that to get the coverage she wants to make the band ”disappear”, I’ll have to go with the biggest diamonds I can afford. After narrowing these three choices down to one, I’m hoping you can help me pick the best center diamond possible.
Thank you! I look forward to hearing your opinion.

I am looking to spend around 4-4.5K on the complete ring so about 3-3.5K on the diamond.
I am looking for a diamond that is good quality and also at least 1 carat. 1.2 would be best but i could be asking for to much.
what do you think about this diamond??

Q: I’ve looked at your posts that you’ve had in helping people out choosing diamonds and I could use some assistance. Currently I am picking out an engagement ring from James Allen and I have been looking at their diamonds. I’m looking for a Princess Cut Diamond roughly around 1 carat or larger color being from D-F maybe even a G with an Ideal Cut. As for Clarity I am looking to try and stay in the VS2 range or better. Looking at the diamond pictures they have, I see some have darker areas than others and I don’t know if it’s because the way it has been photographed or what. The ones I looked at were:

The one for 4800 (third link) looks pretty good for the most part but on the certificate it says something about surface graining and I was wondering if that and the strong fluoresence it has will diminish the quality and brilliance of the diamond. I’m open to others if you can find them but wanted your opinion on the matter. I am currently in Afghanistan and I leave to go home in a couple of days so I was wanting to try and have it all together by the time I go on a trip with my girlfriend which would be the 27th of this month. I appreciate all of your help and look forward to hearing from you. Read More→
Q: Is this a decent diamond?

Can you make any other recommendations in that price range? I like the radiant because it is a little different than the traditional round.
