Following yesterday’s selection of the best princess cut diamond for $8,000, today we present you with the best princess cut diamond for $7,000.

(UPDATE: Do not buy this stone!!  This is a great example of how easy it is to make a mistake when buying diamonds.  The inclusion on the bottom of this stone in the picture below is small, but dead white.  Because of its size, I didn’t notice it at first, and therefore I recommended the stone.  But on second thought that kind of dead white inclusion can often be visible to the naked eye, even when it is so small.  The only exception to this advice would be perhaps if you are having the stone bezel set, then it would be covered/obscured)

Q: I’m looking for a princess cut diamond around 1.25 ct (+- .25 ct) set into a channeled band with diamonds only going halfway down on either side. Have made my mind up on clarity, color, etc. My budget is 8000. I want a combination of quality and size. I live near Miami’s diamond district and was told to look there for a good deal. I plan to go to a Jared’s or local store first so I can just look at a variety of diamonds to get an idea of what to look for. Is all this a good idea or am I still more likely to get the best deal online? Anything to look out for? Your site was highly recommended by a friend. Thanks.

Q: Dear Ira, I was wondering if you could give me your thoughts on the following Asscher Cut Diamonds from Bluenile:

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?filter_id=0&track=head#diamonds_pid=LD01788438

http://www.bluenile.com/asscher-cut-diamond-1-carat-very-good-cut-f-color-si2-clarity_LD00439308

I am looking for the best Asscher Cut for less than $8,000 US. I would like a color grade of D-G I would like the best clarity possible and am very open to SI2 as long as it is eye clean and the inclusions are not too bad. Simply put, I would like the biggest bang for my buck. Please advise me. This has been very stressful for me and I have been to many brick & mortar jewelers in Southern California (where I am from) that have trying to persuade me to buy their diamonds. Thanks in advance!! Budget Anything else you might feel is relevant

A: Thanks for writing. Buying a diamond can most definitely be a very stressful experience. Especially going door to door in B&M jewelry stores and getting haggled by annoying salespeople whom you never know if you can trust or not.

I would be very hesitant to recommend buying an SI asscher cut from BN. The reason is simply that the large majority of SI1 and especially SI2 Asscher and Emerald cuts are NOT eye clean.

Take a look at the pic on this stone, and it’s a VS2!!

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Asscher-Diamond-1295751.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

So you see, you need to be REALLY careful with Emerald Cuts and Asscher Cuts because they really show off their inclusions strongly.

I really like this stone, but it’s an H Color (which, btw, I think is totally fine to get in an asscher cut):

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Asscher-Diamond-1304654.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – it’s 100% eye clean and a really really nice cut.

Here’s another one, but a bit on the expensive side:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Asscher-Diamond-1294903.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

One more, a . Well under your budget, and a little smaller than you were hoping to get, but has a favorable depth that makes it look bigger than it is:

Have a look at these and let me know what you think!

Q: Hi Ira, My goal is an diamond in the 1.5 carat range. My parameters would be your suggested minimums including H and VS2. Eye clean is required. Should I assume an VS2 or better should always be eye clean? My likely setting is this one:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-169.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

I have located this diamond:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Emerald-Diamond-1305777.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

at James Allen and have ordered the image (which I will be happy to fwd to you for your review). It certainly seems like a nice price for this diamond. I would like your opinion on this diamond and any other similar ones you might be able to find and recommend. I assume/hope you receive some type of payment from the sources from which you recommend a diamond that is subsequently purchased. I would of course cooperate in any way necessary in this regard.

Q: I have been monitoring your site for a while now and have found it very informative. I do not know the first thing when it comes to diamonds except what I have read on your site. I am looking for a center stone, princess cut diamond for around $8000. I would like it to be from a 1.25ct to a 1.50ct for that price. I have a band already picked out. below is the attached link http://www.hydeparkjewelers.com/bridal-engagement-rings/engagement-ring-collection/tacori-rings.aspx I know it is not a great picture but it is the best one I can find online. The jeweler that is selling this states that the diamonds in the channel are of and VS1 clarity. I have been looking into a center stone from jamesallen.com because they seem to have more resonable prices than the place I am going to buy the setting from. If at all possible I would like the diamond to be of and VS1 clarity. but, I am not sure if I should get the same color and clarity for the center stone. Let me know what you think. Thanks!!!

If what you’re looking to accomplish with your purchase of an engagement ring is uniqueness, then sometimes you need to think outside the box.  There are definitely a fixed number of style groups when it comes to engagement rings.  You have tapered baguette side stones, pave halo, pave on the shank, solitaire, etc.  But aside from these easily categorized style groups, you occasionally have styles that are so unique they defy classification.  Today’s ring is once such design.

Today’s selection features a double shank that is slightly split just before it reaches the basket at the top of the ring. Surrounding the basket is a artfully woven strip of gold studded with ideal cut pave stones.   This creates a fiery pave style look but with the added beauty of this uniquely artistic design.

You can view the ring on JamesAllen.com here: 18k White Gold Pave Frame Split Shank Engagement Ring.

Q: Hi- I have discovered your site and am intrigued. I’m hoping to buy an engagement ring within the next month, quicker if possible. My budget is between 10K and 12K for the ring and the band. I was hoping to get a center diamond of approximately 1.5 carets for this price. Do you think this is possible? Do you have any specific diamonds you recommend? I think I have a band picked out and have used your diamond locator, but it’s tough to find the perfect one. Also, I thought I saw something about getting a discount through James Allen if I ordered through your site, how does that work? Let me know what you think. Not sure how this works, but am free anytime to talk on the phone or by email if you have any free time. Thanks

Normally following yesterday’s selection for the best H&A Ideal Cut Round Diamond for $18,000, I would have presented my fine readers with the best H&A Ideal Cut Diamond for $17,000.  But it just so happens that all the selections I found in the $17,000 range were ultra high in color and clarity.  I find it hard to recommend an E VVS1 stone when there’s a 1.50 carat G VS1 that’s a thousand dollars less!  So today, we’re skipping $17,000 and moving right along to the best Ideal Cut Hearts & Arrows round diamond for $16,000!

Another style that’s very popular nowadays is the cathedral style (named such for the high raised basket resembling cathedral style architecture) engagement ring with small pave side diamonds running along the sides of the shank.

James Allen has a number of engagement rings with this style.  My favorite of them all is the 18k White Gold Channel Set Round Brilliant Diamond Engagement Ring.

The high color of the small pave side stones in the shank of this setting ( to ) will match very nicely with today’s selected diamond.

Q: Hi Ira, I’ve been trolling your site for *months* while I have tried to surreptitiously find out what style setting, cut of stone (and other attributes) my girlfriend of six years would like on an engagement ring. I think I’ve finally managed to narrow it down to an diamond on a baguette-tapered platinum setting. I’m looking to get max bang for buck with the stone and have always been intrigued by your eye-clean SI’s and near colorless with a hint of fluorescence picks… …So can you help me find the best rock that’s eye-clean, sparkles in natural light, no visible inclusions and offers value? I feel terribly guilty asking someone on the Internet to help me find a stone… But I’ve read so many other email exchanges that today I finally bit the bullet :) Looking forward to hearing from you! Thanks
