What great information you have avaiable! Here is the ring that we’re pretty sure we are leaning towards purchasing.

http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-diamond-ring?offer_id=12959&forceStep=STYLE_STEP

Any comments or concerns you have about the ring would be greatly appreciated. We didn’t know if these stones were significant enough in size that we have to worry about color matching to the center stone. Also was wondering how much we should be worried if the side diamonds are eye clean. I had a diamond previously that did have black inclusions (2 fairly small but visible) and it was always disappointing. Even though otherwise it was a beautiful diamond, those black dots always bothered me.

As for the center stone the most important thing to us is that it’s brilliant, white and sparkly. We are looking for a round cut, eye clean and somewhere between 1-1.35 ct. We don’t want to have to pay for something unneccessary, but would like a big wow factor. We realize that there is a lot left open on options for size, but we’re more concerned with the other factors that fit within these size parameters.

Also, I know you often suggest diamonds from james allen just because you can actually see what you are buying before you buy it. If that is the case would we be able to take the setting purchased from Blue Nile and separate center stone to a local jeweler to be set or do you have another suggestion?

Thanks for your site and all your help! It’s much appreciated.

A: That is a beautiful ring indeed! Lets move forward like this – your best bet in this situation would be to have JA match the setting from BN for you. I’ve helped many people in the past accomplish this and they’ve always left very satisfied.

Btw, these side stones aren’t small at all (as far as sidestones go), so you do need to be concerned about color. If JA can make the ring with G/Hs, then it should be perfectly fine to stay in the H/I range for the center stone.

I’m CCing to this email Mr. Jim Schultz from JA who will hopefully respond to us both positively or negatively re: their ability to match this setting for you. Keep in mind also that when JA matches a ring, it is not simply pressed out of a mold, but is rather hand made and considered to be of higher quality.

Best wishes for a wonderful weekend!

Response from James Allen:
Ira/xxxxx,

Thank you for the email. We can reproduce the setting in the link below for $3,000. Production time is approximately two weeks. As a custom design, however, the ring would be subject to a 15% restocking fee if returned.

I want to quickly also point out that we offer a similar setting that is substantially less expensive and also has a matching wedding band. Our item number is 11009p and a link to the design can be found here:
http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-1935.asp

To give you some sense of how this diamond looks with a 1.00ct center diamond, you can view this photograph from our Recently Sold Collection:
http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/sold/settings-with-sidestones/1502/Engagement-Rings-Side-Stones.html

The 11009p features slightly smaller side diamonds that the other design, but they are still large enough to make a really “pop” next to the center diamond. By reducing the size of those side diamonds by just a few tenth of a millimeters, you can still get a fantastic look, but free up almost $1,300 that can then be applied towards the center diamond.

Hope this helps!

Q: Thanks for the suggestion of having JA custom match the setting. We looked at the setting Jim suggested from JA and have one concern when compared to the one we had picked out from BN. The setting from BN (to us) looks like the first diamond off the center stone on either side is farther to the side, allowing it to be seen better. It seems to us that the first stone on either side of the center stone on JA setting is 1/2 hidden by the center stone. We had actually seen that one and ruled it out previously because of that. Do you think that is a non issue or valid concern? We have discussed possibly going with the JA setting and if we are not satified with the look of it we could return it and have them custom match the other setting at that point. Do you know, if we went ahead with having them custom make the ring would we be able to pick out the side stones or would they just do that as they do with their settings? Thanks for all of your help with this!

Also, we see the clarity rating of the diamonds in the JA is slightly less… any way we could make sure they would be eyeclean?
…….
After doing a little more talking and window shopping at local jewerly stores this weekend we’ve decided we are going to have James Allen match the setting from BN. We are also looking for a center stone between 1.25-1.5. We did some searching through JA site and picked out a few that we thought might be possibilities but wanted your opinion on which are the best/cleanest and best value. Also, if you have any other suggestions, we’d love to look at them!

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Premium-Cut-Round-Diamond-1280700.asp

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1344860.asp

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Premium-Cut-Round-Diamond-1347641.asp

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1353926.asp

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VVS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1360339.asp
We haven’t asked Jim yet if the quote he gave for matching the setting was with diamonds in the G/H range or the F that BN had on their site. We’re going to have it made with G/H diamonds though.

Hope you had a great weekend.

A: I think that’s a great choice! I don’t know if the price of the ring will be any cheaper for G/H color side stones, but I’m sure they can definitely accomodate that request!

Can I assume that 12,000 is your max budget? I think the stones you picked, for the most part, are really nice. My only suggestion would be to allow some lower clarity stones in the mix. I can help you find ones that will be clean to the naked eye. For example:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1192013.asp

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1333866.asp

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1360374.asp

Let me know what you think of those!

Q: Wow! There sure is a lot to get excited about when looking at diamonds. The 3 you sent us were beautiful. Yes, max budget for the diamond is 12,000. Of course if we can get a great looking diamond for less that’s even better. After we sent off that email last night we did find one more that was a lower clarity and wanted to have you look to see if it would be eye clean.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1306843.asp

I guess the question now is where do we go from here. Which of the ones we sent you would you stay away from? Any suggestions as to how to make a decision from the choices we have or should we do more searching for a lower clarity diamond? You have been so extremely helpful in this process!

A: All that’s really left to do is make a decision! You can definitely save a lot of money going with a 1.2ct stone like the one you linked to (which is really nice btw). But going up to a 1.50ct stone will definitely be a noticeable jump in size. It’s about 0.5mm which is very easily noticeable.

Maybe pick your favorite 3 and have JA do a side by side comparison for you?

Q: Wanted to let you know we made a decision. We split the difference on the diamond size. We purchased the 1.36 diamond you had offered as a suggestion.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1360374.asp

The customs setting has been ordered and will take a couple of weeks for production. Thanks for all your help, we’ll let you know what we think when we receive the ring!

A: Great! I can’t wait to hear your reaction!!

Q&A: “Thanks…I feel like a diamond expert now.”

Q&A

$6000 Budget

1.20 Carats

1.30 Carats

1.4 Carat

Buying Help

eye-clean

I Color

James Allen

Princess Cut

VS1 Clarity

VS2 Clarity

Q: I am looking for a princess cut diamond that is I or higher in color and otherwise clean to the eye, and I’m looking to spend around $6000. I have almost saved up enough money for the diamond. Of the ones you sent, the first one is not available, so I was looking around and I found this diamond that looks like a good value. What do you think? Is it eye clean? Do you think it is better than the other one you sent?

Thanks for your help

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1347625.asp

A: It has great potential! The only issue is that it’s slightly less deep than the vast majority of most princesses. So I would suggest that if you’re interested, you contact JA and ask them to inspect the stone face to face to make sure it’s not dull do to the shallow depth.

Q: I did as you suggested, and here is the report that I got back on the diamond (I threw two more in just for fun because they offered to inspect up to three for free).

Hello xxxx,

Thank you for your patience while waiting for the gemologist inspection of diamonds 1347625, 1360165, and 1360178.

I have great news, our gemologist has determined that diamond 1347625 is perfectly eye clean and faces larger than diamond 1360165. This diamond has superior light performance compared to your other selections and is your best option.

The remaining diamonds do not have the light performance of the your best option. Diamond 1360165 is also eye clean but there is some light leakage under the table which makes the diamond dark in the center. Diamond 1360178 is eye clean as well and faces the largest, as expected. However, this diamond also appears dark under the table.

I believe you will be very happy with diamond 1347625 when you see it in person. This diamond will look gorgeous in any setting.

It sounds like it’s a good stone, so I think I’m going to pull the trigger on it. I learned a ton from your site, and I’m actually a Wharton grad as well (December 08), so I’m happy I discovered it.

A: That definitely sounds like the one!

Funny about Wharton! Did you ever have Paul Kleindorfer? I loved that man. What a great teacher.

Q: Haha he’s still around, I never had a class with him though. JA has beautiful rings with a round center diamond and square side rubies. I like this idea because it’s something different from the common solitaire, but I wonder if the side stones detract from the center one. What do you think?

A: Thanks for writing! If you like the color red, then ruby side stones are a great idea! I don’t think they’ll take away from the center stone at all. here’s what i like for your budget (since you’re setting it in yellow gold, I’m going to stick to the lower colors):
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/K-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1320047.asp
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1346316.asp

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/K-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1331708.asp
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1326994.asp

Let me know what you think!

Q: Thanks!

Of course, I do love the size of the 3rd one! If I were to one day change my setting to white gold, do you think the K colour would be visible? If so, I am likely to go with the 4th one.

Do you give advice about settings? I have decided again gemstones but am thinking of this one: http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire-rings/ring/item_57-2442_design.asp?module=setting

do you think the thickness of the band will make the diamond less ‘shiny’?

…….

Can you give me your opinion on this diamond:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/K-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1317163.asp

It has colour K but medium-blue fluorescene (will that compensate?) and I only see one small mark left of center.

A: Yes, if you changed to white gold, the K color stone would definitely have a noticeable warmth to it.

That setting is very nice. I don’t think the thickness of it would make the diamond less brilliant at all.

…….

A beautiful stone!
Let me know what you decide to go with!

Q: Thanks for your patience with me. I am planning to go with this diamond, but am a but anxious about the colour. Even the loupe seems quite yellow. Do you think the medium fluorescence will put it in the I-J range?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/K-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1317163.asp

A: The stone looks yellow in the picture because of photograph issues. She likes a modern-looking ring and is particularly enamored with a platinum half-bezel solitaire setting (I don’t have the link to the site; will get it to you later).

I’ve heard stories of guys who have had diamonds they bought here appraised for significantly more than they paid for them. However, I only have a few more days here and don’t want to pull the trigger too fast just to have a diamond – I just want a beautiful stone that I’ll be glad I bought and that she will love.

I’d like to keep my budget around $6-8k for the stone and ring; more if I have to. My girlfriend hasn’t set any requirements for size or anything, which is nice, but I’m starting my search around 0.90ct and going up to 1.5ct or so. Based on the setting, a round brilliant makes the most sense to me, though a princess cut would be fine (though I’m nervous about there not being an organization that will classify princess cuts).

I’m torn right now because I did find an absolutely beautiful stone last night – a 0.9ct round brilliant, SI1 D GIA certified stone that was absolutely radiant compared to the other stones I saw. The dealer quoted me $3,600 or so for the stone alone, and I feel like I’m paying a lot for the perfect color (which will be relatively unnoticeable once the stone is set) that I could get back in a little more size for the same money.

Any guidance you could provide would be wonderful – thanks in advance.

A: Thanks for writing! I hope I’m able to help. If that dealer was showing you a 0.90ct round diamond for $3600, then that’s an unbeatable deal. It’s so good, in fact, that it makes me wonder if you’re being cheated. If it’s GIA certified with a dossier (small cert), then the girdle of the diamond should be inscribed with the cert number. You should check that to make sure it’s the same diamond on the cert.

Also make sure the cut is at least VG and it doesn’t have strong blue fluorescence.

Let me know what you discover!

Q: I’ll check the diamond tonight – is the laser engraving relatively easy to see on the girdle with 10x magnification? I looked at your loose diamond pricing tool last night as well and from everything I could see, it looked like I was getting the diamond about $700-1000 below comparable stones, which is hard to believe.

I had been planning on going back to buy it yesterday evening, but became engrossed in the rest of your articles. Assuming that the diamond is the one on the cert, I’m thinking that I’m paying a lot for the D color, which will end up being far less important, and could even get a larger stone for roughly the same money.

Again, I’m not part of the “bigger is always better” crowd, but my girlfriend is tall (6′) and wears a size 7 ring, so I don’t want to get her a diamond that’s going to look underwhelming on her. Thoughts?

Last – some of the stones I looked at seemed to positively explode with fire, and others seemed completely lackluster. Obviously the latter I’m staying away from, but what’s the difference with the others? Is it simply the cut is that much better?

Thanks again!

…….

So I returned to the store tonight and confirmed that indeed it is the diamond in question – the ID number on the stone matched the paperwork. However, I also determined that while the stone exhibits no fluorescence, it’s rated a fair cut, not VG like you recommended.

I just looked up the pricing for a similar stone on your website and included the additional fluorescence, polish (rated excellent) and symmetry (rated good), and only two stones were left in the category, one at $4,219 and one at $4,470. Obviously I’m not exactly comparing apples to apples since you don’t have a “Fair” cut option, but equally obvious is the fact that I’m not looking at as great a deal as I initially thought.

I’m probably talking well past my experience level, but the diamond in question is exceptionally brilliant, more so than any of the other stones I’ve looked at in the last few days. There are two conclusions I can draw from this. One possibility is that most of the other diamonds are pretty inferior stones as a whole, so this one simply shines in comparison (there are very few stores here that carry GIA certified diamonds – most are IGI and I’ve been less than impressed with most of them). The other option is that the cut was rated a little low due to it being borderline in some way, which I find hard to believe.

I only have a day left in town, so any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I also haven’t bargained with the proprietor much, and that’s pretty common here–what would be a truly fair price for the stone as it is right now? Of course, if you believe I’m barking up the entirely wrong tree, point me to the right one.

A: Now everything makes more sense. If it’s a “Fair” cut, then the price you were shown is really nothing special. THe reason is simply that a 0.90 with a fair cut is most likely a stone that is cut too deep, so even though it weighs 0.90cts, it’s going to look like a 0.70ct stone. You’d do much much better with your money just buying an ideal cut 0.70ct stone which will be the same size (in terms of diameter) and be much more brilliant. You should most definitely pass on this stone.

For example:
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/D-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1308045.asp

This stone has an “excellent” cut from GIA, and I’m willing to bet that it’s got larger dimensions than the 0.90ct stone you’ve been shown.

Q: Glad I decided to pass before I got your email! You were pretty adamant on the cut quality being there in your email and articles, so I decided to take your word. I don’t have the dimensions of the stone I was looking at in front of me, but I think you’re right – the “excellent” stone from JA has larger dimensions…

Thanks for steering me the right way; I’ll be sure to touch base with you again when I get back to the States and have a chance to look at some more GIA diamonds in person. I’m continuing to read your articles and get smarter about this process for later on.

Thanks again!

A: My pleasure! Stay safe. And if you stop by israel on your way home, you’ve got a cold beer waiting for you!

Q: I’m back – have finally had a chance to look at what my girlfriend likes and have an idea of where to start at least. The ring she’s interested in is linked below:

http://www.turgeonraine.com/detail.asp?pid=1032

I hadn’t been looking at anything except round diamonds before so I’m trying to get a handle on this area. I’m also finding out the proportions of the CZ that’s in the linked picture; will advise when I have that info. She seemed to be picking things with approximately a 1.5 ratio. Right now I’m thinking 0.95-1.49 carats, VS2-SI2 clarity, F-H color. My budget is still $6-8k for the diamond. Any ideas you could give me would be excellent – I appreciate your help.

A: Looks like you got out of Bahrain just in time! What shape is she looking for? In the past we were discussing rounds, but now you said you’re looking for something with a 1.5 ratio.

Q: Ira, thanks for the quick reply! You’re right; I was just talking to my friends about how lucky we were to get out of Manama when we did…

My apologies on not mentioning the actual cut – she’s liking the look of an oval now. Any ideas? Thanks again!

A: Here are some I like:
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-SI2-Premium-Cut-Oval-Diamond-1353366.asp – have JA inspect this one. If they say it’s eye clean, then this is a real winner. It’s borderline to me based on its picture.
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Oval-Diamond-1342819.asp – not quite as elongated, but still very nice.
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-VS1-Premium-Cut-Oval-Diamond-1337284.asp – another beauty

Have a look at those and let me know what you think!

Q: Thanks for getting back to me so quickly as usual. I’ve got an email in to JA to inspect the first diamond for eye cleanliness; I agree, the quality of the picture isn’t as good and I wonder how much it will really “pop” and scintillate based on that picture.

I had seen the second one but wondered a little about the lower color grade (we’re debating 18k white gold or platinum; my girlfriend is leaning more towards the white gold now) and the inclusions on the right side of the picture. The facet pattern seemed a little odd to me on this one as well, somehow; the clouds of reflections on the sides of the diamond seemed a little off-putting, but what do I know?

We both really like the last one you picked; I think that’s a winner. We’ll talk about it some more and I will definitely let you know how it all turns out. Thanks again for all your expertise and help – you’re truly one of a kind.

A: My pleasure! I look forward to hearing from you!

Q&A: Looking for Princess Cut Diamond, 1.3-1.5 Carats

Q&A

$7000 Budget

$7500 Budget

1.30 Carats

Buying Help

eye-clean

H Color

I Color

Ideal Cut

James Allen

Princess Cut

VS1 Clarity

VS2 Clarity

VVS2 Clarity

Q: Well, it’s been a pretty daunting search so far and I’m happy to have found your site. I was in the diamond district in LA looking at diamonds and decided to hold off on some of their offerings because the prices seemed to be all over the place…amongst other concerns I had regarding quality vs. price.

I’m looking to spend about $7,000 total for a ring and diamond. The ring will be a classic style Tiffany style solitaire in white gold with four corner prongs.

The real challenge for me has been the diamond. I am looking for a princess cut around 1.3-1.5 carats. I prefer VS2 and H color or better but not set on it if it’s a great stone. I really just want a diamond that is clean, bright and durable.

Can you point me to some solid options?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

A: I’m very happy to help. Here’s what I like:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VVS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1324388.asp

Eye clean. Perfect cut.

Q: Thank you for the great recommendation! I went ahead and purchased it and expect it to arrive in the next few days.

A: Congrats! Please let me know what you think when it arrives!

Q: Unfortunately, James Allen called me and told me that the beautiful diamond you recommended was damaged during setting.

They recommended an alternative stone but it was not really in the range of carats I was looking for: http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1260647.asp

Would you be willing to take a look and see if there is anything else out there that you would recommend?

A: You should definitely go for that stone they recommended. It’s actually larger than the original 1.30 in terms of LxW. It’s a better cut overall as well. Smaller table, lower depth. Consider this whole episode a blessing!

Q: Please know that I honestly appreciate your feedback. It was a wonderful stone. However, the carat size was one of those things that I was wrestling with…while I was considering it, the stone was taken.

I am optimistic that another option will be found and I will inform jamesallen.

A: I applaud your optimism! Let me know what happens!

Q: After more searching I am now considering extending my budget by $500 to $7500 for setting and diamond. What do you think about this one for that price range?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1350543.asp

It seems like a monster for a size 4 solitaire ring but it just seemed like a great deal since I was looking for 1.3 (or greater) to begin with.

Am I missing something? Would that pinpoint inclusion show up?

My other option is to go back to the 1.24 that James Allen recommended (to replace the one that you first recommended – it was chipped during setting). http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1260647.asp

Of course, the latter one is quite a bit cheaper with a nice physical size as you mentioned before.

A: I agree – that’s a great find!

Q&A: Questions regarding I Color and Fluorescence

Q&A

$7000 Budget

1.30 Carats

Buying Help

engagement ring

Excellent Cut

eye-clean

Fluorescence

I Color

Ideal Cut

J Color

Round Brilliant

SI1 Clarity

VS2 Clarity

Q: Hi. I’m looking for round diamond:

- ’Excellent’ Cut

- ’I’ Color or Better

- ’SI1’ Clarity or Better

- Not much more than $7000

- As big as possible

I’m not exactly clear on Fluorescence. If I’m getting an ’I’ Color Diamond, would it be preferable to get one with ’Medium Blue’ Fluorescence over one with ’Faint’ Fluorescence? Similarly, would it be preferable to get one with ’Faint’ Fluorescence over one with No Fluorescence?

A: Thanks for writing! As regards your question about fluorescence – Faint has no consequence whatsoever on the look of the stone and medium blue might ever so slightly whiten the color, but it’s not a guarantee and even if it happens the affect is really and truly minimal. I’ll put it like this – if you happen to find a stone that looks great and happens to have medium blue fluorescence also, consider yourself lucky. But to start rejecting nice alternatives because they don’t have fluorescence would be crazy.

I took a look for you and here’s what I came up with:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1335872.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – this is your largest alternative, but there’s no pic or cert yet. Definitely worth contactign JA and requesting one.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1295750.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – slightly smaller and slightly cheaper. Eye clean. Triple excellent.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1328986.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – another great option

Have a look at these and let me know what you think!

Q: That second one looks pretty good. Yeah, I’m seeing a difference between certain ‘SI1′ diamonds, so I wanted to make sure to get one that is eye-clean.

Any other similar diamonds that are eye-clean?

Thanks

A: There’s plenty more, but they’re all smaller. I was aiming for the largest within your budget that was still eye clean.

Q: Thanks for your help. I’m looking to buy soon. I’ve been looking at these diamonds. Do these diamonds look ‘eye-clean’ to you? Are there any other diamonds that I should be looking at?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1335096.asp?a_aid=dmdn1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1342719.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

And again, I shouldn’t be concerned when buying an ‘I’ Color diamond right? My girlfriend doesn’t analyze diamonds for a living or anything.

Thanks for all the help.

A: Those are all fantastic choices, but I think I actually like this one the best:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1342719.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

You shouldn’t worry at all about buying an I color stone. It will look completely white to you when you see it.

Q: What don’t you like about the 1.36 carat diamond. Is it because it has a slightly thick Girdle?

And I see on your website in big bold letters that you say not to pay extra for triple excellent diamonds. Is there any other diamonds on the James Allen website that I should be looking at that isn’t triple excellent? I just want to get the best value that I can.

A: The 1.36 wasn’t visually larger than the 1.27, so I saw no reason to spend more for the larger stone. Plus, the cut seemed nicer in the picture on the 1.27.

The thing about this stone is, there isn’t much of a premium here for the fact that it’s triple ex. I took another look, and I think this might be a better value. Just as large, but significantly cheaper:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1335177.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Q: Last question!

Yeah, that diamond you sent me looks good. I can see the ‘feathers’ a little bit off center in the photo. Do you think I will be able to see those without magnification when I get the diamond? Would this diamond be a little bit better for $300 more?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1182113.asp?a_aod=dmnd1357

A: That stone I linked to will be 100% eye clean. As for this stone you linked to, I didn’t recommend it because it offers nothing in return for the extra $300. It’ll most likely look identical to the other stone, so why pay an extra $300 for it?

Q: Thanks for all of your help! I ended up ordering this diamond. Its in my budget and eye-clean and seems plenty big enough. I’ll let you know how it ends up!

Thanks

A: Sounds great! Congrats! Please let me know what you think when it arrives!!

Q&A: Looking for Ideal Cut Diamond for $5-6K Budget

Q&A

$5000 Budget

$6000 Budget

1 carat

1.20 Carats

1.30 Carats

Buying Help

E Color

eye-clean

Fluorescence

I Color

I1 Clarity

Ideal Cut

James Allen

Round Brilliant

SI1 Clarity

SI2 Clarity

VS1 Clarity

Q: I’ve spent the last four months or so trying to decide what would be the perfect diamond for my fiancée to be. I’ve read over everything on your site and have looked at all the diamonds you’ve recommended in my price range (5-6k). I’m still torn as to what kind of diamond would make my girlfriend happiest. I think a diamond with ideal cut and as many carats as I can get would be best. I would prefer not to sacrifice too much in clarity of color, but would be okay with going as low as SI2 clarity and I color.

Two of the diamonds you’ve recommended on your site are:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1193896.asp?a_aid-dmnd1357

and

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-I1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1131295.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

I know that these are two very different diamonds that fall into roughly the same price range of 6,000 which is just on the high side of what I’d be comfortable spending. Could you recommend a good compromise to these two diamonds?

Thank you so much for your help!

A: Thanks for writing! I’ll do my best to provide you with a nice option as large as possible for your budget. Here’s what I found:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1316440.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1303341.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1317154.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

let me know what you think!

Q: Thank you so much for the prompt response!

They all look great, but I guess I would lean towards either the second or third diamond based almost exclusively on size, but also a

little bit on price. What my untrained eye tells me is that the second diamond looks a little more included overall than the third,

but that the third diamond has a decent sized inclusion in the lower left quadrant. Should any of this be a concern when deciding between the two or would they both look the same to the naked eye? I love that both are ideal cut because I believe that is one thing worth paying for, right?

Also, a few more things. When differentiating between the diamonds, should I be concerned with the girdle? How about the fluorescence? I’ve noticed that the third diamond has a medium blue fluorescence. I’ve read on your site that this can actually be beneficial in lower color grade diamonds and give them a better appearance. So is this blue fluorescence an asset to this I color diamond or is ‘medium’ too strong a fluorescence to be a positive? Also, what effect will the diamond being “slightly faceted” have if any? From looking online, I understand that that is a positive thing due to a good cut. So it seems that the third diamond would have the best girdle. I don’t really know how much weight I should put into that.

Lastly, here is the band I will be using if that should effect anything:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire-rings/ring/item_57-1903_design.asp?module=setting

You’re help is immensely appreciated! I know you don’t have to do any of this and it’s amazing to me that you offer your time an expertise so selflessly. My girlfriend is a lovely girl n and I’m just trying to make sure I make the right purchase!

…….

I’m sorry, I just looked on your site and you explained that “medium blue fluorescence” would be a great positive for an I diamond. My question then would be, how much weight should I give this? Also, please don’t be hesitant to just go ahead and tell me what your favorite between the two would be! Thank you!

A: The 3rd stone has faint fluorescence, not medium. The “medium” that you saw is the girdle.

I wouldn’t put much weight on whether the girdle is faceted or not. It has very little impact on the look of the diamond.

Of the three, I like the third one the best. I’m pretty sure the inclusion on the side can be covered by a prong from the setting, so the stone will then be almost completely clean.

Don’t forget, btw, to use the TAD0611 coupon code to get 10% off the cost of the setting. It’s not much in your case, but every little bit helps!

Q: Thank you very much! I purchased the third diamond and used the ring discount. I can’t wait to pop the question!

A: My pleasure! Good luck! And please let me know what you think of the ring (and how the proposal goes!)

Q: Will do!

…….

So I figured out why our previous email exchanges were so confusing!I was re-reading our email exchange yesterday and it turns out I opened the diamonds in the wrong order and so when discussing them I misnamed them. I actually purchased the first diamond(http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1316440.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357) you listed. I referred to it as “the third diamond” during our discussion. This is also why I said that it had a medium blue fluorescence. If you read what I said about it, I think you’ll find my observations make more sense. Anyways, I just wanted to know your opinion even though I already ordered it. It just looks so beautiful and clear in the picture from James Allen. I’m hoping it looks the same in person. I am a little concerned with the dark black inclusion in the bottom left of this picture though. Do you think that will show up? I look forward to a response and I will get to see it for myself this Wednesday! So sorry for the confusion. Like I said, I opened all the links and the tabs they created lined up in such a way as to reverse the order (1st = 3rd and 2nd = 2nd, and 3rd = 1st). I’m very grateful for your help!

A: No problem re: the confusion. That inclusion might visible, but it really depends on how JA sets the stone. If they do a good job and put the prong right where the inclusion is, then it will be very hard to see. The prong won’t cover it, but it will definitely draw your eye away from it in a serious way.

Q: Thanks for the quick response Ira. I’m a little bit worried about the inclusion. I called James Allen and spoke to someone there. They told me the same thing you did; that the inclusion might be visible but could be shielded by the prong which could provide adequate distraction. She also said that the cut and color of the diamond looked very nice and thought that it was a great purchase at this price. So all in all, she basically echoed your sentiments. I must admit that I’m still a bit troubled and that probably won’t change until I can get a good look at it, but I’m hopeful that it will still be suitable. How would you recommend that I proceed? Should I wait until Wednesday when I receive the ring and make a decision when I can see it in person? Or should I maybe look for another diamond that might not have visible inclusions? Thanks again!

A: I definitely think you should wait and see.. It’s a great stone. You never really realize how small these things are until they’re right in front of you.

Q: Thank you. Will do!

A: Sounds great. I look forward to hearing your impressions!

Q&A: Looking for Round Diamond Engagement Ring in Australia

Q&A

$8000 Budget

1.20 Carats

1.30 Carats

Buying Help

Customs

Excellent Cut

eye-clean

F Color

G Color

GIA

Good Symmetry

H Color

I Color

Ideal Cut

J Color

James Allen

Round Brilliant

SI1 Clarity

side stones

Very Good Symmetry

VS1 Clarity

VS2 Clarity

Yellow Fluorescence

Q: Wow Ira, there is so much to take in when researching this stuff!! Thanks for such a great site (it has certainly helped a LOT), hoping you could give some more of your time to answer a few more questions?

I’ve got a budget of about $8K for the entire ring. I’m aiming for a round brilliant centre stone of around 1.2ct, set in a white gold band with smaller diamonds either side of the main diamond. Similar to a 4-claw version of:

www.diamondexchange.com.au/tray/index.php?main_page=ring_builder&cat=23&s=rb&sku=3977

I assume that the ring and side stones will cost about $1700 to buy and put together, leaving about $6.5K for the centre stone.

So, regarding the centre stone, what should I be looking for (GIA of course)? Your guidelines recommend the lowest eye-clean clarity possible, ie SI1/VS2, Ideal/Excellent cut, Good or better symmetry & polish which I am happy with.

Initially I was hoping for F or better colour with No fluorescence but that might push the price up a bit too far. You suggest H-J colour with Medium Blue fluorescence as a better ”bang for your buck” buy (particularly in a silver coloured ring), is this still a good idea given that there will be other diamonds beside it in the setting? Can you suggest any particular diamonds that would be suitable?

Also, can you offer any guidance for the smaller stones, or is it better to purchase locally from the jeweller who ”assembles” the ring?

Something else that I need to bear in mind is that anything that I import from overseas will incur about 15% in customs duty and taxes, plus insurance. Am I way off the mark with my budget?

I appreciate your help and thanks again for such an informative website.

A: Thanks for writing!

One thing you should keep in mind is that even if you buy locally, the original importer had to pay the same duties you’ll have to pay if you buy overseas (assuming he imported the diamond legally). So local prices already have the taxes built in. So just make sure you do a complete comparison when comparing prices.

If I were you, I wouldn’t try to find a supplier of the sidestones and try to have it built custom. It’s a very basic and common design – any place you buy the loose diamond from should without any issue be able to supply you that ring complete.

Here’s a nice alternative from James Allen, for example:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/Common-Prong-Engagement-Ring.html

If you like that setting, let me know and I’ll suggest some diamonds for you so you’ll end up at about $8K (USD or AUD?) total including your taxes, then you can compare this total package to what you can get locally.

Q: Thanks for the quick response!

Yes that option that you suggested from James Allen is an interesting alternative, I like the way that the centre stone is set nice and high – I’m guessing that it would allow more light underneath? I also like the way that the band rises to meet the centre setting. My only concern with that design is that you can see too much of the white gold band between the side stones, as she seems to prefer the pavé style. I think that I might be safer with something like:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/18k-White-Gold-Pave-Set-4-Prong-Ring.html

Yes I am aiming at about $8K AUD – at the moment I am pretty lucky in that we are nearing parity with the USD.

A: Lets see what we can do here!

According to JA’s currency converter, about $6850 USD will cost you about $8000 AUD taking into account taxes and what-not. So taking that ring you selected, it costs 1125. After applying the TAD0611 coupon, the ring will cost $1012.50. So that’s going to leave you with about $6750 USD for the diamond.

Here are some diamonds that I think would look amazing with that diamond ring:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1326401.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – eye clean. Triple excellent.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1320385.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – ditto

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1308155.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – Eye clean. Excellent Cut.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1314483.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – Eye clean. AGS triple zero.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks again and have a good weekend.

Q: I didn’t think that I’d be in the ballpark for something quite as large as 1.35, so that’s a pleasant surprise. When I was doing my initial research, I figured that I would be forced to sacrifice some size to allow for an acceptable colour and clarity. So, taking your first suggestion (1326401) as an example, my question is would there be much visible difference between that I/SI2 with twinning wisps and surface graining (noted on the certificate) as opposed to an F/SI1?

What do you think of these examples? I find it quite difficult to get a good idea from the Virtual Loupe.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1315494.asp 1.13/F/SI1/Ideal Cut/GIA?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1324256.asp 1.18/G/SI1/Ideal Cut/GIA?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1303393.asp 1.29/F/SI2/Ideal Cut/GIA?a_aid=dmnd1357

I’m also not real sure about going with anything apart from GIA certified (based on your information on your certificates web page).

All that said, I’d definitely go with the larger stone if there is no noticeable difference between the two! *so confused*

A: In terms of clarity there would be no difference at all between the SI2 and SI1, assuming both are eye clean. As far as the color goes, if both were directly next to each other and you were viewing them face-up mounted in a ring, you would just be able to perceive a difference in shading. But if you viewed them separately, the difference would be much harder to see. When seeing the I, you would most definitely say that it looks white.

The biggest issue between the stones I suggested and the F SI1 is size. There’s about a half millimeter difference between the two which is obviously noticeable.

In theory, the 1.29 F SI2 would be great (aside from the higher price), but that particular stone you linked to would not be clean to the naked eye.

Q: Ira, that’s good news. The 1.35/I/SI2 seems like very good value!

Now, as you suggest all I might see what similar options there are locally over the next week or two – to be honest, I don’t think I’ll get close. Then it’s just a case of deciding between white gold and platinum (there’s only $300 difference between the two), figuring out the ring size (that could be a challenge…), and then I’ll be ready to go!

Thank you once again for your help. I’ll certainly be recommending you to any of my mates might be looking to make a purchase.

A: My pleasure. I would like to make a suggestion to you, though. I think you should order the ring now, so you have it locked up. Otherwise, you’re very likely going to have it sold out from underneath you. You have a full 30 days to return it for a full refund, so you have nothing to worry about. And anyway, this will allow you a better sense of comparison when you shop around.

If/when you do place the order, make sure to use the TAD0611 coupon code to get 10% off the setting.

Q: I hope you are well.

This is just a short email to let you know that I did follow your recommendation and I went ahead and ordered the ring from JA. It has since arrived and it is simply stunning. I am very impressed and I am sure that she will be too!

So I thank you once again for all your help. Should you receive any enquiries from Australia in the future, it might be worth mentioning that I was charged 5% import duty, plus 10% Goods and Services Tax – so I did end up going quite a bit over my budget, but I believe I still received far better value for money than had I purchased from here.

Best regards!

A: That’s wonderful news! I’m very happy for you! Did they let you use the coupon, btw?

If you wouldn’t mind, do you think you could do me a small favor and leave me some feedback on ivouch? If you could, I would be VERY grateful!

Thanks again! And Congratulations!!!

Q: G’day Ira,

Yes they did accept the coupon code, thanks for the tip!

I left some comments on iVouch. Please let me know if you want me to add/remove/change anything – I’m grateful for your help!

Cheers

A: It’s fantastic! As an engineer I love the scientific aspect of diamond shopping. Your site was great in educating me and allowing me to search for the best stones out there. As well as sifting through the BS at the brick and mortar stores!

I am looking for the largest round diamond without sacrificing cut for a budget of 7-8000. I have found this stone on James Allen and thought it was a great deal. What do you think?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1284518.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

I found this stone to be slightly lower then the average price of similar sized stones. Is it because of the I color? Based off of my limited knowledge from your website and looking at a ton of stones on JA I think this is a good bang vs buck stone and should be eye clean? Does the road rash (lack of a better term) near the center concern you? Do you have any alternate suggestions?

Once again I cant complement you enough on putting together such a comprehensive website and I appreciate any feedback you can give me.

Thanks.

A: Thanks for writing and thanks for the kind words about the site!

I took a look, and I think this might be a better value for you:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1326401.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

It’s an SI2, but from the pic, it definitely looks like it will be eye clean. So with the savings in the clarity, you pocket a little bit of money and you get a larger stone. Sounds good to me!

Q: Thanks for the quick reply. The diamond you suggested does look nice and looks like I get more bang for my buck. Back to the diamond I originally looked up. The certificate was from almost a year ago. Any reason why it hasn’t sold in a while? Any added benefit for the HA to be inscribed on it? I assume it means Hearts & Arrows.

If I am looking towards the top end of my budget, what do you think of this diamond?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1310939.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Thanks.

A: Why is the cert old? There are a lot of possible reasons to explain it that aren’t “it’s an ugly stone that nobody wants to buy.” So I always tell people concerned about old certs that if there’s nothing else that looks askew, then you shouldn’t let an old cert dissuade you.

As for the inscription — ignore it. Anybody who orders the inscription service from GIA can request ANYTHING to be inscribed. H&A is not something GIA grades. It’s just something the stone’s owner requested GIA to inscribe on the stone. They could have requested GIA inscribe “Superman” on the stone as well. The stone might actually be Hearts & arrows, but JA isn’t selling it as such, so I’m skeptical that it really is.

Q: Thanks again, what do you think of the 1.5ct diamond I linked in my last email?

A: Sorry I missed that! That stone looks fantastic. The only issue is that it’s only about 0.20mm larger than the 1.35 I suggested, so I’m not sure it’s worth the big jump in price.

Q: Yeah I see what you’re saying its over a grand more for .2mm which is relatively small. Do you have any other suggestions in addition to what you originally recommended? Id like to look at some stones to compare with (in ranges around your suggestion and higher), not that I don’t like the one you suggested. Theres something I like about that stone I selected but without the experience that someone like you has I don’t want to be too quick in pulling the trigger without doing some comparisons.

Thanks again.

……….

Hate to keep emailing you but it looks like someone pulled the trigger on the diamond I originally linked because I just looked and its unavailable! I did see this newer one listed and looks good to me. Whats your opinion?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1326654.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Thanks.

A: That’s also a very very nice looking stone. The J color will be slightly “warmer” than the I color, but it will still look white.

Q: Ira, thanks for the advice. I went and put that diamond on hold so I can continue looking over night and not lose out on any good stones. I just searched again and it looks like my original 1.29-I-SI1 is available again. In your opinion, which stone looks better?

I really liked this tension setting and was leaning towards it. Does this setting influence your opinion in any way?

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/contemporary-rings/ring/item_500-7619.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Hopefully you are not busy tonight or tomorrow morning so that I can make a purchase before the stones reserve goes off.

Thanks again!

A: I would go with the I SI1. Eye clean is eye clean, but there is a real difference between colors even if they’re extremely hard to perceive.

Q: Thanks for all of the help and opinions. I went with the I-SI1 and cant wait to get it! It will be a while before I receive it since the tension setting takes longer to make but Ill keep you updated.

A: Great news! Please let me know what you think when it arrives!

Congrats!

Q: Thanks again Ira, throughout all my research on the topic of diamonds I came across the Holloway Cut Advisor. I was wondering what your take on it and its output is.

A: I actually just answered someone else about this, so I’ll just copy what I wrote him:

“Hi Dhiraj. I personally don’t think the HCA is particularly accurate. Even the creator of the HCA says himself that it’s only a rejection tool. Meaning, it should only be used to reject stones that receive a high number. It should not be used to select from a group of stones that receive a low number by choosing the lowest number.”

But I would really go one step farther. The GIA invested 10 years of research examining real-world performance of every possible combination of measurements. Their cut grade reflects this research. I tend to side with them over Mr. Holloway when they disagree.

Q: I just received the ring today and its absolutely stunning. Better than what I had expected! Its clear, white, bright, and sparkly! i am so glad that I ran across your website to educate myself with and I am so grateful for the advice you provided for me.

I did have one last question for you though. James Allen included an appraisal with the order (which was just icing on the cake when I saw the number!) how much credence do you put to this appraisal? Do you usually recommend getting it independently appraised for insurance purposes?

Thanks again.

A: Great news! Thanks so much for writing to let me know!

As far as the appraisal goes, I don’t give credence to ANY appraisal. They’re only good for what they’re used for – getting insurance. For insurance purposes, you need the replacement value – what you could expect to pay walking into any retail store. So naturally, that’s going to be more than what you paid.

……….

Oh! one more thing! Do you think you might be able to write me a short ivouch review? If you could, I would be very grateful! here’s a direct link if you have the time:

[LINK REMOVED]

Thanks!

Q: i just left you a positive review on ivouch. Once again I must thank you for all the information and advice you have shared with me. I popped the question on Sunday and it was amazing! Thanks to you my fiancée has everyone jealous of the gorgeous rock and I dont have a black hole for a bank account!!! I will make sure to steer anyone in the market to your site so they to can get an education!

Q&A: Looking for a Loose Princess Cut 1.50+ Carat Diamond for $6,000 – Is it Possible?

Q&A

$4000 Budget

$5000 Budget

$6000 Budget

1.20 Carats

1.30 Carats

1.50 Carats

Buying Help

GIA

I Color

Ideal Cut

J Color

Princess Cut

VS1 Clarity

VVS2 Clarity

Q: Hello Ira, I have been shopping for a loose diamond to mount in a setting for the last 4 months or so. I saw your site and found it incredibly helpful. I have also been monitoring the James Allen site and noticed it is appreciably cheaper than any other site I have found on the Internet. I am switching jobs in the next month, which will allow me to finally move forward with my purchase. To the diamond, my girlfriend really has her heart set on a 1.5ct diamond, has to be princess cut, and my budget is proving somewhat constrictive. I already have a setting picked out, and have budgeted roughly $6K for the diamond. Here is the setting I plan on mounting it in. http://design.jared-diamonds.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-5794.asp I was wondering what your suggestion would be, and if maybe I should think about getting a slightly smaller, yet higher quality diamond. I appreciate you help, thanks!

A: Thanks for writing. You’re right that your budget is a bit constrictive, but i don’t think it’s REstrictive. Here are three options that are really beautiful stones that would look great with that setting:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VVS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1303427.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1301513.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1298698.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Those each have superb cuts and are totally clean to the naked eye. Each one is a fantastic choice.

Let me know what you think!

Q: Sorry for the delayed response. I looked over the diamonds you sent me and I really like the first link! I am considering this diamond and one other right now.

The other that I saw pop on James Allen I posted below, and thought that it looked like a great deal. While the cut is only premium, as compared to ideal, it seemed like the difference in cost might be substantial enough to over come my reservations.

Let me know what you think when you get a chance, and thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS2-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1292297.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

A: Hey XXXXX. I think that’s a great stone. Its parameters fit within my recommended parameters from my princess cut article.

….

Did you manage to make a purchase yet? If so, I’d love to hear what stone you settled on in the end!

Q: We have yet to actually make a purchase yet, however have narrowed it down to two stones on James Allen.

We shopped all of the brick and mortar stores and never found all of them to be significantly more expensive for lower quality diamonds.

After searching settings further however, we changed our mind and are going in a different direction. Due to my future wife’s wonderful skin tone we feel like a yellow gold setting would compliment her very well. We found this setting with which we are particularly enamored:

http://www.shaneco.com/Catalog/ProductDetail.aspx?X=41046797&O=Nav&C0=1&C1=3&S=PD

The setting in natural light has just a slight tint of yellow.

As to the diamonds we like, due to the nature of the setting we feel like a J color would compliment this setting especially well. Here are the two contenders we have identified:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS2-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1292297.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – 1.62, VS2, premium cut, $5360

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS2-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1298772.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – 1.50, VS2. premium cut, $5690

We are leaning towards the second one since it seems to have a better cut.

What are your thoughts, and if you see something else you think is especially nice I would love to hear.

Again thanks for the information on your site, it made finding a quality diamond at a great price possible.

A: Thanks for getting back to me. That’s a really beautiful setting you picked out. The ring is going to look amazing.

I also think you’re doing the right thing by going for a J color stone to match the setting.

I looked at the two stones you suggested, and I searched myself for a better alternative, and I don’t think I found one. The closest I could find was this:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VVS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1311148.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Here’s my thinking: I don’t like the 1.50 ct stone. It’s too shallow, and it has an extremely thin girdle which is (especially on a princess cut) is prone to chipping. So while it’s size is attractive, it’s not worth the risk.

I like the 1.62 stone. It’s got a great price. I would have preferred an ideal cut, but this is what there is.

Actually, the stone I suggested above is a really good option. Even though it’s only 1.28cts, it’s only a TINY bit smaller in LxW than the 1.62ct stone (because of it’s ideal cut). 6.34×6.15 vs 6.22×6.12. That difference really isn’t even perceptible to the naked eye. So, actually, I think I endorse that 1.28 OVER the 1.62 for the simple reason that they’re going to look almost identical, so why spend $1000 more on one of them!

Q: So after much consultation I wanted to get your opinion one last time before making our big purchase.

The 1.28 stone is currently the front runner, so thanks for finding that gem no pun intended, but before I pulled the trigger on that stone I wanted to get your opinion on two other ideal cut stones at a higher price point. My girlfriend, soon to be finance, originally had her heart set on a 1.5ct stone, but being a reasonable person if the costs out weight the benefits then she is willing to amend her previous expectations. Here are all three stones with the 1.28 as the first stone.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VVS2-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1311148.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1276853.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VVS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1303427.asp?a_aid=dmnd1375

The other three stones are:

1.28ct, ideal cut, J color, VVS2, 6.22×6.12 for $4,310

1.50ct, ideal cut, I color, VS1, 6.51×6.29 for $6,570

1.55ct, ideal cut, J color, VVS1, 6.48×6.44 for $6,910

After reading your useful site over and over I feel fairly comfortable identifying all of these as excellent stones. What I really would like to know is if the cost difference between the 1.28ct and the 1.5ct stones is warranted. By this, I am basically wondering if the visual difference to the naked eye is going to be significant enough to warrant the extra $2,200 in cost. If the difference is minimal, or hardly discernible then I would be inclined to go with what I feel is an excellent bargain in the 1.28ct, but as you are probably well aware this is a big purchase and I just wanted to get it right.

Thanks for taking the time to digest this lengthy message, and your help has proven invaluable.

A: Here’s what I think:

1) Reject the I VS1. It’s not as nice of a cut as the J VVS1, so if you’re going to spend more money, it should be for the J, not the I.

2) The 1.55 is a slightly better cut than the 1.28, so it’s going to look slightly nicer (in addition to being larger).

3) THe difference in size is only about 0.25mm which is noticeable, but really just barely noticeable.

So it’s really your call. For the extra $2200, you get a very slightly larger stone and a very slightly nicer stone. Is that worth $2200? It’s hard to say. It’s certainly not an easy call in either direction. It’s not like it’s a MUCH nicer stone and MUCH bigger. But on the other hand, it is nicer and bigger, and noticeably so – just not by a lot.

…….

Just wanted to follow up with you. Did you make a decision yet? If so, I’d love to hear what you went with in the end.

Q: After a lot of consideration last night I finally made my decision and purchased the 1.28 ideal princess cut diamond you recommended from James Allen.
