Q: Hello Ira, First, thank you for your site. It’s proven quite helpful already.

My question concerns potential vendors. I live in Los Angeles where we have a wholesale jewelry district downtown. An acquaintance, who actually picked out her own , swears that I would be a fool to not use one of these local vendors. Is she right? (And if so, would you happen to have anyone here that you recommend?)

I love to buy online but I’m still not entirely convinced that buying a diamond online is the wisest option. Especially with the local options reportedly being so great. Ultimately, of course, I just want the best deal. Perhaps better deals will, in fact, be found online? I intend to go in soon to see for myself and have some basis for comparison, but I’d love to know what to expect. Any insight here would be very welcome. And I thank you in advance.

Best – D

PS – I anticipate going for a round cut, 1.25 or so Carat, and trying to get the cleanest, clearest one I can for *hopefully* under $8k. But that’s just an initial direction. I definitely do not intend to spend more than ten grand, and would be thrilled to find something great that’s closer to five! Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Q: I have been monitoring your site for a while now and have found it very informative. I do not know the first thing when it comes to diamonds except what I have read on your site. I am looking for a center stone, diamond for around $8000. I would like it to be from a 1.25ct to a 1.50ct for that price. I have a band already picked out. below is the attached link http://www.hydeparkjewelers.com/bridal-engagement-rings/engagement-ring-collection/tacori-rings.aspx I know it is not a great picture but it is the best one I can find online. The jeweler that is selling this states that the diamonds in the channel are of G color and VS1 clarity. I have been looking into a center stone from jamesallen.com because they seem to have more resonable prices than the place I am going to buy the setting from. If at all possible I would like the diamond to be of G color and VS1 clarity. but, I am not sure if I should get the same color and clarity for the center stone. Let me know what you think. Thanks!!!

Hi Ira, I love the site. Very helpful – you’ve already saved me money by showing I can still get a great diamond by relaxing some of my initial standards. I feel I’ve taken your advice on what to look for, but I was thinking maybe you could give me your thoughts on a few that I’ve found:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1277723.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1268618.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1289334.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1276071.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

Are any of these appear better or worse than the others? The diamond will be going in a white gold setting. I look forward to hearing from you.

You might have noticed during my current daily diamond series of the best Hearts & Arrows round diamonds for various budgets that I’ve also tried to highlight a different style concept in engagement rings each day.  Today I will try to continue this pattern.

Another style that I love is where the shank of the is studded with small that are larger than typical pave diamonds.  Most pave diamonds are about 0.01 carat.  The side diamonds of today’s ring are 0.05 carat each.  0.05 carat diamonds are usually about 2.4mm across while 0.01 carat diamonds are approximately 1.35mm across.  The difference is quite significant and truly changes the look of the ring.  In the industry, pave-size diamonds are referred to as “stars” while diamonds between 0.02ct and 0.07ct are referred to as “full cuts.”

James Allen has several rings with side diamonds of this size.  My personal favorite among their selection is their 18k White Gold Common Prong Ten Briliiant Diamond Engagement Ring.

One style that is very popular nowadays is the “halo” style.  The halo style is basically when you have a diamond pave-set frame around the edge of the face of the diamond set in the .  This is popular for a number of reasons.  Firstly, all pave styles in general are very popular now and have been for a number of years now.  But additionally, halo styles are popular because they give the diamond the appearance of being larger than it actually is.

James Allen offers several different “halo” style engagement rings.  Many are a part of their designer “Meno MicroPave Collection.”  But these rings are expensive, due to their brand name.  But JA offers many similar styles in their regular selection that are equally as beautiful.

One such example of a beautiful halo-style in their regular ring inventory is their 18k White Gold Split Shank Pave Halo Diamond Engagement Ring.

What I like about this setting is that the split shank widens the footprint of the ring on the finger, yet it’s not big and bulky.  So this ring will look great on fingers of all sizes, yet doesn’t look overly heavy with gold or platinum.

James Allen also has a large variety of engagement rings to choose from to pair with today’s daily diamond selection.  A truly elegant style that’s somewhat off the beaten track of popular styles is the look of a squarish center stone flanked by two triangular shapped trillion diamonds.  One great example of this popular style is James Allen’s 18kt White Gold 3-Stone, Pave Set Diamond Engagement Ring.  Don’t let the “3-Stone” name fool you – this is no anniversary ring style – this is an style through and through.

As with all of our Daily Diamond selections, today’s stone is completely clean to the naked eye.  That small faint black inclusion you see in the center of the stone will not be visible to the naked eye.  This stone is a truly great value for the money.
