Q: I am looking for an engagement ring and happened to come across your site. Here is what I’m looking for:
* Is your goal cheapest price for given parameters, or best diamond for fixed budget:
Well, I’m looking for the best diamond that I need without overpaying for things that are not needed.
* Shape:
Round
* Desired Color Range:
F, G, H
* Desired Clarity:
VS1, VVS2
* Budget:
$5000
* Anything else you might feel is relevant:
The above parameters are flexible.
After reading your homepage, it seems like a VS2 will be acceptable if the blemish is not visible. Basically, I’m somewhat fortunate as my girlfriend does not really want a big ring as she doesn’t want it to look too gaudy. She saw a friends ring which was 1.25 carats and thought it looked nice, BUT she said she could never wear a ring like that. (note, it wasn’t round so I don’t know if that made it look bigger than the carat weight) She has relatively small, petite fingers. At a store, she saw 0.5 and 0.75 carats and she said that would be enough (but she didn’t try it on, just looking through the case). However, financially, I can afford a bit more than that. So I’m thinking of about a 0.9 carat ring. The ‘guy’ side of me wants to go even bigger since I can afford it. I don’t want to regret buying a too small ring when I could afford a larger one. Yet, I want to respect her wishes. Anyway, I’m looking for any advice or maybe the best value diamond at around 0.9 carats or something else if you recommend a bigger ring.

Q: Hi Ira, I’ve been looking at your site for many months now so first of all I’d like to thank you for explaining what to look for in a diamond in such a clear yet thorough way. I appreciate that you must be a very busy man but 2 minutes of your time would be greatly appreciated. I’m looking to buy an engagement ring for about $3000 ($1000 for the platinum setting and ~$2000 for the princess cut diamond). I spotted this (and it turns out so did you). I’ve asked JA whether it is eye clean or not and I’m waiting for their reply.http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1277345.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 I also spotted this which looks like a good I1. But the bottom left corner concerns me – is that an inclusion there that might be susceptible to breaking off? Otherwise I think it appears to be an excellent find for the price. http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-I1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1240349.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 Your views would be really appreciated.

Q: Hi Ira, Thank you for putting together a great site. I’m just starting to look for a diamond engagement ring and had a few general questions for you. As I narrow down some of my parameters, I’ll likely have more for your later. I appreciate your help! 1) Most of what I’ve read (especially about cut) has been about round diamonds. I am also considering an oval shape. Does the oval shape greatly affect the brilliance (sparkliness) of the diamond because of the new/different ratio between table and depth? Are the cuts graded the same way as a round diamond? 2) As I assume most people are, I’m unsure of how the 20x magnified picture compares to real life. For example, would the imperfection near the middle of this diamond be visible?

Q: Dear Ira, My friend told me about your site and am very glad he did. I was hoping to glean some wisdom from you regarding topping this ring off with a real fireball: http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-2115_design.asp?module=setting It’s a beautiful ring, but has taken a good chunk out of my $5,000 budget ($2,280 for 18k white gold). So, my question to you: would I be able to find a diamond that would compliment this ring and keep the total under $5,000? I would prefer Ideal or even the hearts & arrows cut, but don’t have any preference on color. I would like the center diamond to be large enough to stand out among the two side stones (approx. .22 carats each). When I was at a jewelry store, I noticed that a center/side stone diameter ratio of around 1.5 started to bring the desired results, which I guess would be around .75 carats for the center diamond for this ring (with knowledge of sidestone weight and http://www.zales.com/jewelry101/index.jsp?page=diamonds_Carat). With all that said, the bigger, the brighter, the better. Thank you for any suggestions!

Q: Hi, I have been secretly searching in jewelry stores locally for an engagement ring for my girlfriend. I do a lot of shopping online but have been hesitant with diamonds although the prices seem much better. I am looking for a round cut diamond between .80 and 1.0 carats that will be put in a white gold cathedral mount. My budget is up to $3500 for both the diamond and setting together. Most of the stores I have been at either recommended a much lower color grade or were above my budget by several thousand in their recommendations. Can you help point me in the right direction? Thanks!

James Allen also has a great selection of engagement rings to choose from to match with this diamond. If you’d like a setting that’s both svelte and elegantly simple with some pave accents, you might like to try James Allen’s 18k White Gold 0.30ctw Common Prong Diamond Engagement Ring. This ring is a great way to show off this ideal cut round brilliant diamond.
Today’s diamond is really the perfect example of why I decided to do a daily diamond series of selections of specifically I1 clarity diamonds. Take a look at the zoomed out photo to the left. That picture is still significantly larger than the actual size of the diamond, and it’s still completely clean to the naked eye. Other than the very small black crystal on the top left in the picture, there’s a very faint feather that’s so faint it’ll be completely invisible to the naked eye.
