Q: I am looking for an and happened to come across your site. Here is what I’m looking for:

* Is your goal cheapest price for given parameters, or best diamond for fixed budget:

Well, I’m looking for the best diamond that I need without overpaying for things that are not needed.

* Shape:

Round

* Desired Color Range:

F, G, H

* Desired Clarity:

VS1, VVS2

* Budget:

$5000

* Anything else you might feel is relevant:

The above parameters are flexible.

After reading your homepage, it seems like a VS2 will be acceptable if the blemish is not visible. Basically, I’m somewhat fortunate as my girlfriend does not really want a big ring as she doesn’t want it to look too gaudy. She saw a friends ring which was 1.25 carats and thought it looked nice, BUT she said she could never wear a ring like that. (note, it wasn’t round so I don’t know if that made it look bigger than the carat weight) She has relatively small, petite fingers. At a store, she saw 0.5 and 0.75 carats and she said that would be enough (but she didn’t try it on, just looking through the case). However, financially, I can afford a bit more than that. So I’m thinking of about a 0.9 carat ring. The ‘guy’ side of me wants to go even bigger since I can afford it. I don’t want to regret buying a too small ring when I could afford a larger one. Yet, I want to respect her wishes. Anyway, I’m looking for any advice or maybe the best value diamond at around 0.9 carats or something else if you recommend a bigger ring.

One of James Allen’s most popular ring styles is their White Gold Cross Prong Diamond Solitaire Ring.  I believe it’s such a popular style because it has a very average width which fits most fingers (it’s not too narrow and not too wide).  Plus, the cross prong design offers a bit of uniqueness without getting too wild looking.

So if you like this basic design, but you’d like to crank it up a notch and throw in a bit of bling as well, then you should try their  18k White Gold Cross Prong Princess Cut Diamond Engagement Ring.  This ring design offers the same classic look as the solitaire version mentioned above, but with 3 accent princess cut diamonds on either side of the shank.  This provides the perfect little burst of light if you’re looking for that little something extra.

Q: Hi Ira, Thank you for putting together a great site. I’m just starting to look for a diamond and had a few general questions for you. As I narrow down some of my parameters, I’ll likely have more for your later. I appreciate your help! 1) Most of what I’ve read (especially about cut) has been about round diamonds. I am also considering an oval shape. Does the oval shape greatly affect the brilliance (sparkliness) of the diamond because of the new/different ratio between table and depth? Are the cuts graded the same way as a round diamond? 2) As I assume most people are, I’m unsure of how the 20x magnified picture compares to real life. For example, would the imperfection near the middle of this diamond be visible?

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Oval-Diamond-1110061.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 Thank you again for your help. I’ll probably be back to ask more!

Q: Dear Ira, My friend told me about your site and am very glad he did. I was hoping to glean some wisdom from you regarding topping this ring off with a real fireball: http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-2115_design.asp?module=setting It’s a beautiful ring, but has taken a good chunk out of my $5,000 budget ($2,280 for 18k white gold). So, my question to you: would I be able to find a diamond that would compliment this ring and keep the total under $5,000? I would prefer Ideal or even the hearts & arrows cut, but don’t have any preference on color. I would like the center diamond to be large enough to stand out among the two (approx. .22 carats each). When I was at a jewelry store, I noticed that a center/side stone diameter ratio of around 1.5 started to bring the desired results, which I guess would be around .75 carats for the center diamond for this ring (with knowledge of sidestone weight and http://www.zales.com/jewelry101/index.jsp?page=diamonds_Carat). With all that said, the bigger, the brighter, the better. Thank you for any suggestions!

Q: I was recently at a jewelry store that carried the hearts on fire diamond. What are your thoughts on this diamond, and for $2,500 could i get a better deal on a diamond that still had the same sparkle? the largest i can afford of the hearts on fire is a half carat or maybe a 5/8. it would be nice to get a 3/4 carat without sacrificing on the quality of the cut. thanks for your time
