Q: I am looking for an and happened to come across your site. Here is what I’m looking for:

* Is your goal cheapest price for given parameters, or best diamond for fixed budget:

Well, I’m looking for the best diamond that I need without overpaying for things that are not needed.

* Shape:

Round

* Desired Color Range:

F, G, H

* Desired Clarity:

VS1, VVS2

* Budget:

$5000

* Anything else you might feel is relevant:

The above parameters are flexible.

After reading your homepage, it seems like a VS2 will be acceptable if the blemish is not visible. Basically, I’m somewhat fortunate as my girlfriend does not really want a big ring as she doesn’t want it to look too gaudy. She saw a friends ring which was 1.25 carats and thought it looked nice, BUT she said she could never wear a ring like that. (note, it wasn’t round so I don’t know if that made it look bigger than the carat weight) She has relatively small, petite fingers. At a store, she saw 0.5 and 0.75 carats and she said that would be enough (but she didn’t try it on, just looking through the case). However, financially, I can afford a bit more than that. So I’m thinking of about a 0.9 carat ring. The ‘guy’ side of me wants to go even bigger since I can afford it. I don’t want to regret buying a too small ring when I could afford a larger one. Yet, I want to respect her wishes. Anyway, I’m looking for any advice or maybe the best value diamond at around 0.9 carats or something else if you recommend a bigger ring.

Q: I was recently at a jewelry store that carried the hearts on fire diamond. What are your thoughts on this diamond, and for $2,500 could i get a better deal on a diamond that still had the same sparkle? the largest i can afford of the hearts on fire is a half carat or maybe a 5/8. it would be nice to get a 3/4 carat without sacrificing on the quality of the cut. thanks for your time

James Allen also has a great selection of engagement rings to choose from to match with this diamond.  When searching for an setting to match with a 3/4 carat diamond, you want something that’s going to add some “flash” for not too much “cash,” but you also don’t want to overshadow the diamond with too much action around and behind the stone.  I think James Allen’s 18k White Gold 2.6mm Six Prong Pave Set Engagement Ring exemplifies this delicate balance.  The pave stones set in the shank add much extra sparkle, yet they don’t over power a 3/4 carat diamond.

As with yesterday’s selection, today’s eye clean I1 clarity diamond is a perfect example of the kind of quality you can still get even dropping down to an I1 clarity graded diamond.  Today’s diamond is just as clean to the naked eye as a VVS1 clarity diamond and a fraction of the cost.

Following on the heels of yesterday’s best Asscher Cut Diamond for $3000, today we present you with the best Asscher Cut Diamond for $2500.

Here’s the Stats (or Click Here for a Copy of the GIA Certificate):

I recognize that the Length/Width ratio on this stone is really pushing the bounds of what is considered square.   defines square as having a l/w ratio of 1.00 to 1.05.  This stone has a l/w ratio of 1.06.  So I would recommend for anyone considering buying this stone to look carefully at the picture above to ascertain for his or herself whether or not the stone looks square to you.  If so, then go for it!  If it looks off-square to you, then it’s better to pass on it.

As discussed in my Truth About Diamond Prices article, diamond prices jump at round weight categories (ie, 0.50, 0.70, 0.90, 1.00, 1.50, etc).  So a 0.49 carat diamond will be around 20% less than a 0.50 carat diamond.  Likewise with a 0.69 carat diamond compared to a 0.70 carat diamond.

Today’s diamond is one of those rare 0.69 carat beauties.  All of the size of a 0.70 carat diamond, but a lot less money!

Here’s the stats (or click here for a copy of the GIA Certificate):

J Diamond Color

SI2 Diamond Clarity

Measurements: 5.64*5.68*3.59

Diamond Cut: Very Good

Diamond Polish: Good

Diamond Symmetry: Very Good

Depth: 63.4%

Table: 55%

Price:  $1,140

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a copy of the diamond’s picture at press time, but you can click on the link below to be brought to the diamond on JamesAllen.com and see it there.  It’s completely eye-clean.

Normally, I wouldn’t recommend a diamond with a depth higher than 62.5%, but since this is such a steal at 69 points, and since the diamond still maintains a “Very Good” Diamond Cut grade from the , I’m enthusiastically recommending this diamond.  The diameter is still about 5.65mm which is still really good for a 3/4 carat diamond.

As I explain in my article Truth about Diamond Prices, diamond prices increase exponentially at the critical price category thresholds.  If you’re looking for value under one carat, one such threshold is 0.69-0.70 carat.  A 0.70 carat diamond will cost approximately 20% more than a similarly configured 0.69 ct diamond.  So if you can deal with the psychological issue of the first number being a 6 and not a 7, you stand to save a lot of money by looking for  a diamond in the high 60s.

Today’s recommended diamond is one such stone.  Here’s the stats (Unfortunately, a cert copy was not available at press time):

J Diamond Color

SI1 Clarity

0.68 carat

62.7% Depth

55% Table

Polish: Very Good

Symmetry: Very Good

Dimensions: 5.66*5.60*3.53

Price: $1,120

If we examine that price further, we find that it’s really a great price.  $1120/0.68 = approximately $1650 (Price per carat).  For a level J SI1 diamond of this size, the wholesale price that I used to pay when I was dealing in very large quantities of these sized diamonds was maybe $50 or so less per carat — and that’s for very average cut qualities, and for diamonds that were 95% between 0.59 and 0.64.  It was extremely rare to have diamonds weigh between 0.65 and 0.69 — the closer to 0.69, the rarer the find.  The reason should be obvious — if a cutter can make 20% by maintaining the round 0.70 weight, he’s going to do everything possible to accomplish that!
